Fair and peaceful campaigning?

Just some examples to show how the campaigning looks like:

Dian Islamiati Fatwa, a lady who works for the Prabowo campaign team, stated that Jokowi's toll roads -even while they are stiff and drive nice- are in fact hired assassins (pembunuh bayaran) because they lead to burst tyres. Couldn't it be that blowouts occur because of old age, no correct air pressure, too heavy loads, 0 mm profile and driving till the nylon is visible?

A complaint has been filed against Jokowi for bringing up and disclosing personal information in yesterday's debate. (The land ownership.) Obviously Fadli Zon had a perfect explanation and Jokowi's team is informally requesting a KPK investigation on the acquisition.

The 'bombs' from yesterday evening were in fact (modified?) fireworks, and yet another reason for some bikkering and nice blaming on both sides.

Talking about Fadli Zon; he visited his friend Ahmad Dhani in Surabaya.

Afterwards he was complaining about the fact that the prison was in fact built with a capacity for 550 inmates, but there are more than 2.500 prisoners.

They all keep on talking about overcapacity so perhaps they should take out their dictionary once, but okay.

What is worse, is that an important member of the DPR which in fact would have the power to change this situation, allows almost no laws to be passed and only brings up human degrading situations as these in the country, when a political ally is affected...

To make it even more dramatic; Fadli compared Ahmad's prison to Auschwitz. And the latter was, according to this bright light, better since the prisoners had individual sleeping places?!

Well, if Prabowo wins he will likely become Minister of Internal Affairs. Can hardly wait.

Ah yes, Mr. Smith with the Maserati, eh ..... Mazda, remember him? :car:
His court case for beating up some young guys will start Thursday in Bandung.

It was moved from Bogor to avoid demonstrations etc. but the presence of the extremists is rather strong in both places so that won't make a big difference.

This is not about the hate speech on Jokowi btw.

Now who is this with Fadli?

An US retired army officer (working at NATO), invited by Prabowo to give a speech. Wesley Clark was in the race to be presidential nominee for the Democratic Party once.

He's just against foreigners. Well, now he has to be.

His link with the current US government was rather strong with/via Hary Tanoe. But that guy jumped ship and is pro Jokowi again so I don't know what that did to the relationship.

Remember Neno Warisman?

This rather famous actress who became political activist, was a witness (on language!) in the Ahok case.

She has been 'campaigning' in a very unconventional way. She p!ssed of so many people with her amazing statements and actions in her own unique hysterical fashion, they would not even let her off the plane anymore in Batam.

So at the latest 212 demonstration (21 February), she gave a speech and read a poem. In which she stated that when losing there would be no more real believers. And to make it worse she compared the election to the famous Battle of Badr (Perang Badar). In which the Muslims beat the infidels from Mecca. (Rizieq has been referring to that battle as well, when his return was announced.)

So VP candidate Ma'ruf, an Islamic clergy in very high esteem, is not happy. He: "First of all, it's only an election not a battle to the death. Secondly, should we as opponents be considered infidels? It's a good thing the election committee investigates this" [sic]

I'm waiting for the official complaint from the Jokowi team which is just a matter of time...

His link with the USA is much deeper than through some random tycoon Harry Tanoe and it goes trough CIA and the US army, USINDO, and other heavyweight US companies-Freeport, Chevron, Vico, from his early days.

Times are changing though; in the Suharto era the American involvement was much more on avoiding communism, keeping the status quo and focused on nepotism and self-enrichment of the clan. Prabowo as being member of that clan definitely will have inherited quite some of that thinking. And it's rather easy to link Jokowi to China. Which in many people's minds here is still a synonym for communism.

But nowadays, the economic drivers are much more important. And the trade-war between the US and China overshadows everything which might make Prabowo the desired candidate for Trump c.s. But both candidates have a similar nationalistic view that more and more business income (read: Freeport, Chevron etc.) should stay in the country. Obviously the chance is we will never know how Prabowo would deal with these foreign companies active in mining, gas and oil, and the pressure from the US.

Of course it has been a big blunder to position Sandiaga as an Islamic scholar while he simply is an extremely rich business man formed by US capitalism. But he does bring up important economic issues that touch the man in the street. If they continue to keep on hammering on the price of products and inflation (so the purchasing power of the general public), they could make up quite something of the backlog in the polls.

Grace Natalie is the head of the PSI, a rather new pro Jokowi party that aims more at young people. In the polls they don't make the 4% threshold though.

Fact that Gerindra took gen. Wesley Clark for their promotions tells me that their relationship to US heavyweight companies would be much more in a "cooperation for mutual benefit" spirit, like in the good old days.

Positioning Sandiaga as a Muslim scholar is an excellent marketing tactic. Sandiaga is currently positioned against Jokowi, not Amin and he is a magnet to millenials, while Jokowi has not much to offer. Amin is quite a poor choice for a VP candidate. He will not bring new votes, and maybe some votes from the progressives for Jokowi would be lost.

^ Nah. They just needed someone who would pacify the demanding most traditional religious fractions. But Prabowo needed Sandiaga's money. Very simple; he did not want to put any more of his own in this saga which is already going on for years. So how can you make both demands fit? Right, by lying.

He's just rather popular with the Ibu Ibu and students. And the latter who are speaking out so loud are kind of manipulated (i.e. get paid). More are pro PSI or go more extreme.

But what's in there for Sandiaga himself? Well, quite a lot. All the investments he makes could pay off in the future, after the Jokowi era. That's better than a vice governor post.

Absurd...

The three ladies who were going door-to-door for PEPES (no not the wrapped Banana leaf dish), proclaiming a Jokowi government would allow gay marriage, prohibit head scarf etc. etc. were arrested later.

.
If Prabowo loses, now we know why: It's because of all these foreigners who are (illegally) allowed to vote since they have an e-KTP.

I kid you not, a storm in social media in which -as usual here- the hoax is believed and forwarded. It's a big conspiracy to provide all these (mainly Chinese) with national ID's.
.

Well, that was something I did not really know what to think of; Jokowi has stated the opponent's campaign team was assisted by a foreign consultant. It seems it was a Russian.

Of course it doesn't mean the Russians play any significant role in these elections but it does create a bit a feeling of déjà vu.

Of course the big news is Andi (whose expression reminds us of Jack in The Shining), being arrested in a hotel room with 'a woman', desperately trying the flush the sabu through the toilet to destroy the evidence.

A police general is doing everything he can to make it sound convincing this was a spontaneous action, not a trap, nor an attempt to damage SBY's Democrats. And there was no woman involved, nor evidence for disposal via a toilet. But from a person who even ignores pictures of a ripped toilet bowl, drug paraphernalia and a lady being interrogated by policemen and who clearly contradicts statements from his subordinates, it is a bit difficult to believe anything he says. And what is he trying to do?
