Fair and peaceful campaigning?

The campaigns for Indonesia's presidential election in April 2019, officially started ten days ago.

The two candidates (and their running mates and supporting campaign teams) paraded through central Jakarta and read a declaration out loud about wishing a peaceful campaign. They even released white pigeons. Beautiful gestures.

Some days later, a member of the Prabowo team, named Ratna Surampaet, who is well known as being a political activist, was attacked and beaten up by thugs.

Obviously the possible link to Jokowi supporters was quickly made. Even Prabowo himself alluded to this possibility when he heard from her she was attacked. So, a big scandal had started.

But but but. Now the truth comes out; it was a ‘little white lie’ since she didn’t want people to know she underwent plastic surgery to her face! (There was a non related plastic surgeon raising questions after he saw the pictures and they got her entering a clinic on CCTV.)

This really made some people become a laughing stock. Prabowo supporters even ask the police to charge her and to kick her of the team to make clear they are not ‘involved’.

The lady has quite a history btw, she’s from North Sumatra and has been active as writer, director, etc. The last time she was in the news, is when she got arrested with Ahmed Dhani and some others just before those huge (anti Ahok) demonstrations. The charge was they were planning a coup d’état but that never materialized in a lawsuit or so.

I don't wish to be rude but............which pic is the one where she was supposedly beaten up by thugs?

Things could get rough in Indonesia......almost as bad as US politics......maybe like some of Europe?

Apparently the news continues about Ms. Surampaet. After what appears to be a highly publicized, and massive embarrassment, she headed to Soekarno Hatta airport for a trip to Chile. Chile is one of several South American countries where people traveling on an Indonesian passport, can enter without a visa. They ended up arresting her at the airport, and now she's a suspect - but not clear as what the charges are.

Had she made it to Chile, they would have given her a 90 day entry stamp. She could have then went to Ecuador, Peru, Columbia, and even Brazil. Between all those countries, she could have bounced around indefinitely on free entries that are granted to Indonesian citizens. Peru and Columbia both offer 6 month entry without a visa.

In another article, the police indicated that she would be charged with "spreading lies and hate speech as stipulated by the Electronic Information and Transactions Law". Yesterday it was unclear whether she would be charged, but as noted today that changed at the airport.

It seems she was taken from the plane. Bit last minute I guess. It does seem the had gotten and accepted an invitation for attending a seminar so it could become one big misunderstanding.

Many things don't make a lot of sense though. She applied for sponsorship of the DKI to participate in that event in January. But now there are questions why her plane ticket ends in São Paulo (Brazil)?

Also, her version is that she didn't want to admit to her family members she underwent plastic surgery and so she made up a story. But, in fact she underwent multiple surgeries in the (recent) past and the family was aware of that, it was no big secret. Therefore people accuse her and the campaign team of having a hidden agenda.

Seems she'd just had an operation, but someone lied and said she'd been beaten up.
No accusation, just mentioning what was in the newspapers

Also worth noting that Chile has no extradition treaty with Indonesia.

The soap continues, Anies states (duh!) that the money that the DKI provided for her trip (70 juta for transportation, accomodation and daily expenses), was in no way a 'thank you' for her support during the governmental elections. And they want the money back.

There has been a lot of gossip/info floating around......a plot and she would leave the country like Rizieq. Also, initially it was that the money was taken, for her plastic surgery, from some victims fund for Lake Toba.

She was arrested at the airport on her way to Chile and she has been involved in trying to take down Jokowi in the past.

It is my understanding that at some point, in her past, she was an activist against the Suharto regime.

Yes, some consider(ed) her even a new Kartini. (Difficult to explain but let's say Indonesian's first and best-known feminist.)

But it has gone downhill very fast the previous decade.

And -obviously- this whole hoax case now is presented by the Prabowo camp as negative and bad campaigning by the opponent, distracting from the real issues in the country.

As we say in my native language; they squirm like an eel in a bucket of snot.

They have become opponents of the IMF conference in Nusa Dua saying it is too lavish. Now that is something I can relate to. Esp. if it's true that it will cost over $70 million.

.
So lord Oliver B. Bumble introduced a new -original- slogan: "Make Indonesia great again".

Tom Puss reluctantly tries to give it a positive twist and states that is what the country needs and everybody wants, even the opponents.

And Novel Bamukmin, a spokesperson of one of the Alumni 212 groups (FPI), stated in a speech what many of these groups already think: If you love Allah, voting for Prabowo/Sandiaga will make you go to heaven for sure. (It is a saillant detail that these two leaders are in fact much less 'pious' than the opponents.)

Luckily quite some leaders have taken distance of this former employee of Pitsa Hats (seriously, that's what he wrote down when filing the complaint against Ahok, they found out it was Pizza Hut).

Actually it is better than that. He actually said if you want to go to heaven you should ask Prabowo and you should ask Sandi. Yet, somehow not blasphemy.

https://news.detik.com/berita/d-4254043/novel-bamukmin-mau-masuk-surga-pinta-ke-allah-rasul-prabowo-sandi

"Bu, mau masuk surga? Pinta sama Allah, pinta sama Rasulullah, pinta sama Prabowo, pinta sama Sandiaga Uno. Betul? Takbir. Insyaallah masuk surga," kata Novel.
Maam, do you want to go the heaven? (Then) ask Allah, ask the Prophet, ask Prabowo, ask Sandiaga Uno. Right? Takbeer. God willing (you) will enter heaven," said Novel.

However, he later said that he said "Cinta" or to love, not "Pinta" (to ask). Either way, kinda silly.

Yeah, I'm also wondering which era they refer to when they say 'again'?

The colonial pre 1945? Ah no, it was the Dutch East Indies back then.
The Soekarno period? Hmm, if they want to restore the political three pillar model with the communist party, and many girlfriends for the president of course.
The Suharto dictatorship? That’s a period where the country was sucked dry by nepotism from a certain clan and in which racism and violence against a certain ethnic group was stimulated by the state.

There are not a lot of options left besides those periods...
