Starlink Internet

Yes, there's two RJ45 ethernet ports. Indeed theres more affordable solution available in the market to extend the range. For now, im using my old tplink tl-wa850re. Stronger signals but not much in speed.
Looking for affordable device to extend up to 40m. Will check D-link products.
That is good to hear. One of the reasons I haven't made the jump sooner was the lack of an ethernet port without an expensive add on. Will definitely keep that in mind for the future. What is the cost of the hardware now?

Rp. 4.7m for the standard kit Gen 3 + Rp. 350K for shipment to Karangasem, Bali. The standard kit is suitable for temporary installation. You'll need one of the optional mounting kits, price vary from approx. 700K to Rp. 1.3M

Hey @Wisnu - I noticed your comment a few posts ago with the screenshot of your coverage area/potential disruptions etc etc before you received your Starlink. Did you end up putting the antenna in the same place that you ran the test or did you find somewhere better with less disruptions? I'm getting this:

We ordered ours today but I didn't know this test existed until hours after we ordered it...so I just wanted to see how reliable you've found it so far in comparison with the test you ran.

Also based in Karangasem - Amed.

Cheers

No, we installed the starlink at different location, ie. on the rooftop "third floor" our new constructed hut in the middle of rice field. Practically no obstruction. Simply put the receiver on the floor, it work well.
At my current location, 500m away, obstructed with hills behind the house, where lot of potential disruption for starlink, we installed telkomsel Orbit and Myrepublic; both are suck.
Since you're at Amed feel free to stop by, when passing through tirtagangga.

Good to know, thanks! I'm situated in a small valley essentially. I think the hills are high enough for it not to be too much of an obstruction, but we'll soon find out I guess. Trees are going to be the biggest problem. It's worth mentioning that I didn't do that test from the roof, so hopefully when I (send someone to) go up there, the results will be better! If not, I'll be ordering the pole fitting mount and will make a 3000m tiang to solve the problem

The standard mounting is not suitable for roof installation, and not very easy to modify DIY. You need to spend another Rp. 700K for pole mount adapter whether your pole is 3000m or 300mm.

I would love to watch someone set up a 3000mt. Pole? Bring the Popcorn!
Hey, even a 300 mt. pole, would be interesting to watch!

With a pole that tapers to the base and a heavy base, add guy wires and warning lights and it is possible. Expensive, but possible.

C'mon, he was kidding with 3000m pole. Me, 0.3m (300mm) pole is okay. The point was, need to buy optional pole mount kit

Gosh, and I was trying to do the math and figure out how many Fairies and Fireflies, it would to take to lift the Tower, and cables, and how Many Unicorns and Elves, to do the ground work, for 3000mt. Tower.
But I think you have a problem here. No structure is supposed to be built higher than the Temple, or Coconut trees?
And Hey, don't forget that optional mount kit!
Oay Vay, Vhat to Do?

Fascinating responses everyone!!!

Fortunately yes, it was sarcasm...

A bit of an update though: I bought an aftermarket mounting kit which turned out to be of very nice quality and very strong (actually cost a bit more than the official Starlink one). The mounting pole is around 500mm or so (a bit far off 3000m). It's as high as it can go, in the center top of the roof.

We are frequently getting between 180 - 300mbps, which is mega compared to our standard WiFi, but... many, many interruptions...they occur, on average, 10 or more times per hour, sometimes lasting for up to 25 seconds. The majority of them are +/- 2 seconds, which is fine. The longer ones are definitely noticeable, particularly in video/whatsapp calls, and even browsing at times. For streaming, however, it's totally fine most of the time (other than live F1, which is the biggest concern). Netflix/Youtube etc, totally fine. Also loading 4-8k videos like there's no tomorrow...instant.

I got in touch with Starlink as initially I was really puzzled as to why I can't simply swivel the dish around to a position where I felt it would get the best and clearest view of the sky. Unfortunately, the alignment has to be very specific in order to catch the specific trajectories of satellties in our area, irregardless where your clearest view is. If I pointed the dish to the South where the view of the sky is 100% clear, it wont work, and must face West, which is where 95% of the obstructions are... I have actually tried it in different positions, simply ignoring the alignment guide on the app, but it does not perform well.

It will be interesting to see what happens during dry season when all the leaves disappear...we are also (unfortunately) taking one of the biggest trees down next week due to weather damage...I believe this could help a lot.

If you're considering getting one, I really do recommend having a proper, proper survey of the area first, because they really do not handle obstructions well, even if its just a few tree tops.

Perhaps the 3000m pole needs to happen...

sorry, a bit derail from the topic; what's name of tree and how big? I might be interested to pay and relocate it. Or, I can tell you somebody who might be interested to buy it.

Let me know, The Fairies, and Fireflies, are in need of Work! Due to deforestation, and chemical pesticides in the rice fields, they're having a hard time feeding their families. 🤷🏼‍♂️✌️🙏🙀☠️🧚‍♀️🐝

We haven't given it a name yet, but it's not for sale i'm afraid! A combination of severe rayap damage + wind caused an 8m x 30cm 'branch' to fall off it during the last storm, luckily didn't kill anyone or destroy the house... It's probably touching 15m tall and a meter wide at the stump. Will of course be harvesting the wood..

A report today that Starlink has had a global network outage attributed to software. I wonder how Expat Ino members who now have Starlink are getting on. Perhaps now unable to read the forum.

Who in this world doesn’t have a smartphone with a 4G/5G connection, Harry?

And even from multiple service providers in one household (=backup).

Btw, First Media in our house in Jakarta is down five times per day, on average 2 minutes or so. Now thát is annoying esp when you’re watching a movie or reading the news.

Exactly my experience. I'm sure Starlink has motivation to fix the problem quickly as well. Local providers are fine my with multi day outages.

With a country that has aspirations to become a kind of economic powerhouse, major projects involving billions of dollars it is hard to understand that there seems not to be a commitment to a vastly improved internet capability. I have no idea what kind of costs would be involved. Perhaps someone could enlighten us.

You know what’s a bit risky with StarLink installations in this country? Lightning. So better make sure whoever puts it on your roof also takes care of surge protection. There’s no warranty btw.
