Starlink Internet

quite lot of obstruction in my place; hill behind the house and big trees.
This is the result of checking with the Starlink app. No very promising.

Just had a video call with a family member in SulUt (Sulawesi Utara) who just installed the StarLink. Very good quality and he’s rather pleased with the ease of setup.

I sent WA to the starlink support asking whether it work well in my area as per the screen shot result. No response at all

It seems StarLink only invested 30 M rupiah and employs 3 staff members in Indonesia.

No wonder a WA does not get answered. A bit the Tesla model; no physical shops, everything online.

Still no issues with speed or reliabilty.

But suddenly I encountered issues with sending emails from the iPad. Esp. those with large attachments. The system was reinstalled after moving the router and adding range extenders.

So it seems you need to change the DNS settings or the IP addresses are blocked by the mail providers as Yahoo and Google.

Forgetting the satellites above your head? They are for free?

🙄 You don’t realize there’s a subscription fee?
There is a subscription fee for regular internet and connection sucks. How much is the cost for lifting satelites above the Indonesian sky? Telkomsel spent 250 million USD to launch satelite for internet and connection is a) bad and b)expensive.

Elon might be weird but business wise he‘s not crazy. He wants it to be profitable to fund the expeditions to Mars etc. In the 2024 forecast, it is estimated that StarLink will record a revenue of 6.5-7 billion USD this year, most of which comes from internet subscriptions. Of course with this privately held company the profit/loss situation is not so clear, it’s a bit of a pay out and clawback arrangement*.

*Obviously there are debts to owner SpaceX to pay off. The StarLink satellites can be used to fill up the excess capacity and make sure the whole SpaceX rocket launch is filled. (They have a maximum of 23 satellites per launch.)

No Starlink for now. My republic has extended their FO network to cover our area, so far We're the only user - excellent speed, typical 100 - 250 mbps; availability more than 99% in two months of our subscription. However, I'm still considering starlink for backup if they are reliable.

I am curious whether Starlink does all the site blocking that local ISPs do. For example, can one access Reddit in Indonesia over Starlink?

Wouldn't Starlink basically give Elon Musk access to all users personal data?

Reddit has been back working for years in Indonesia now. Used it on multiple Indonesian ISPs. Something else is going on or Starlink has a very old blacklist loaded. Out of curiosity what have your speed tests been showing? Still kicking around the idea of switching.
