Mudik and C19

They are ramping this thing up gradually. I think the end game is not letting anyone in or out of Jakarta for a couple of months by roadblocks etc.

Unless they’re going to start shooting them, there’s no way to keep every way into Jakarta policed. Not enough police out there, and I can just imagine the riots that could occur.

50K to 100K should get you easy access.

We don't just have police manning the streets here- the guys who usually do the traffic at junctions have put blocks up on the road & are 'policing' them.
It seems to be a team effort- as it should be.

We are attempting to bribe our household staff to delay pulang kampung until the worst has passed. Don't know if its going to be successful.

Do they understand that they may just get stopped if they try to travel?

According to local news, before the Friday Mudik ban the ferries are very busy. Police have checkpoints coming into Bandar Lampung doing simple temp test and checking for mask. Residents in towns in Bandar Lampung along the highway are not allowing people to stop if not wearing a mask. No loitering is being allowed. Trying to keep people moving as best they can. I have heard that a few were turned away from stopping at their family home destination. Will probably get there under the cover of dark or finding roundabout routes.

Lampung is on the edge right now from becoming the next red zone. Numbers are climbing and people are hearing that most of the confirmed cases have been in Jakarta, Solo, and Banten. The highest number of cases in Bandar Lampung are in Panjang which is the first community travelers hit upon coming into Bandar Lampung. Next biggest hit area is Tanjung Senang which is more Center East in Bandar Lampung. Still along the highway and my community. 3rd, 4th, 5th are all over 10 cases each but well behind no. 1 and 2. Map they put out occasionally has a mark on it that is either my housing complex or the neighborhood I live in. They are good here at not identifying the positive or suspected cases.

The government informed one hospital here, Immanuel, they were going to be added to the approved hospital list for treating Covid-19 making 2 now. It came as a surprise and they are now trying to raise money on their own to buy protective gear. Going to be a tough road for them but knowing some of them there, they will get through it.

Farmers here are saying that it looks like a lot of crops will be left to plow under since a lot of transportation has slowed and markets across the nation closed. Haven't heard anything on Lampung coffee but with Nestles being the biggest buyer, they shouldn't get hurt too much like other parts of Sumatra with Arabica beans already feeling the crunch because they can't ship.

Banning all foreign and domestic flights for 5 weeks. Amazing. And what exactly do they think is going to be different by 1 June? There will still be this kind of low level corona wave going through the country, but there will also be people starving, so I don't think they'll have any choice but to start things up again in June.

Well... Ramadan and Hari Raya will have passed! It was surprising that the announcement was made on the day before the start of Puasa. Here in Pacitan Jatim, everybody that does arrive has to report and self isolate for 14 days. Not that it will halt the spread but slow it down and make it easier to assess exposure. It will be up to the Polsek and village authorities to manage the movement and containment of possible new infections. The soft lockdown here has also been extended to June 1 . That will make a total of more than 2 months of lockdown here. Very few economic migrants have returned from Jakarta , Surabaya and Kalimantan. It is worrying to note that a number of domestic and wild animals have also mysteriously died here including cats, dogs and goats. Many people in the 30 to 70 yo age bracket I have questioned here had symptoms including sore throats and fevers about 6 weeks to a month ago, myself included, so I'm hoping it has already passed through here and that the mudik ban will be more to protect possible returnees from being infected!

Well at least they won't be using planes..

I know this was announced yesterday to take effect today, so there is some lag in compliance, but as of right now there is still a lot of flying going on.

Are those passenger flights? Cargo flights are still permitted and a few other narrow exceptions.

Hard to tell from Flightradar, but they are passenger planes. Can't determine if they are carrying people tho.

The announcement did say that they would be permitted to carry cargo in the passenger cabins. Airlines also may wish to move empty passenger planes to better locations for 5 weeks of storage, and also get pilots and air crew back to their homes. Though I wouldn't rule out that it hasn't been perfectly enforced. Tomorrow's view will probably be a lot more telling.

Indonesia applying modified "Swedish scenario" -soft measures, herd immunity and praying.

So apparently they're still allowing planes today, because the announcement was so abrupt. But no more new bookings.

As an aside, with the global airline fleet mothballed: when they come back online, I would give them at least a month before flying again. Storing aircraft is not just parking them, and bringing them back online requires some work. There will probably be a lot of kinks to work out when it happens at this scale.

Come June 2nd, it is possible airlines will require passengers to get blood tests for COVID-19 before boarding.
