EV in Indonesia

My dream was always to go to a Rolls Royce dealership, with shabby clothes and so on. Then when they reject me or give me the looks, wave with my money in front of them and then spend my money for a McLaren.
Well.. that's how it is with dreams, having shabby clothes and getting looks is something I already reached. Waving with money..not so much.

I haven't seen many BYD in Indonesia(at least in Bandung) it's mostly the Wuling Air, Hyundai and Tesla's that I've seen. Most of the EVs in my area are scooters

If it's just for him to putt around in and not go long distance just get him a Wuling Air. If you want him to go a longer distance get a BYD, Hyundai or Tesla. BYD and Hyundai feel more like a normal car compared to a Tesla.

SAN FRANCISCO 2023 - Tesla customers have sued the electric car manufacturer because they feel forced to pay high prices for repairs and maintenance of their cars. Tesla has a monopoly on the replacement parts needed for maintenance and repair work. The long waiting times also bother complainants.

Well that seems silly. If they bought a Tesla, they knew what they were getting into! Seems stupid after the fact!

I think the concept of an all electric vehicle is great, Quiet, no smoke pollution! but from what I've heard, the batteries are incredibly expensive, and use chemicals, and metals only found in very restricted, remote locations around the world. Which would make the buyer vulnerable to possible extreme price fluctuation, and availability!
Also it seems charging these vehicles is difficult, and still uses fossil fuels for the electricity, which seems to me, to defeat the purpose of having an electric vehicle! I heard rumors that there are ways the vehicle could produce it's own electricity, with being painted with electricity producing paint, braking producing electricity, and as the vehicle rolls down the road, somehow that also producing electricity! I don't know if this is true, but it is a great concept that would be nice if this were possible. And imagine even producing enough electricity, to not have to plug in to charging stations! Even if these options would help make the vehicle more self reliant that would be a step in the right direction!
I am talking about a practical concept that should be available to all, for the sake of a cleaner world!! Not as this post seems to be going with only rich, egotistical people bragging about their wealth, looks, and status!

Actually I think a lot of the younger people have good intentions, according the environment and other things. At least better intentions than most older generations. The thing is they often don't notice that in the end they are also just a part of several agendas. People who preach this or that but have something else in mind.(Usually just the usual suspects getting more rich)

It seems as though you've heard some things, but never done any investigation.

The batteries are the most expensive part and producing them has a carbon footprint, yes, but the lifetime cost and carbon footprint of the battery (plus charging) is still much less than that of combustion fuels. Price fluctuations and availability issues are far less than those for fossil fuel.

Even when electric vehicles are charged from grid power generated by fossil fuels, it's still better for the environment. Utility scale fossil fuel generators operate at much greater efficiency than the fossil fuel engine in a car, so 1 liter of diesel burned by a utility, converted to electricity, and charged to an EV will take that EV farther down the road than if the same 1 liter of diesel was put in a similar diesel powered vehicle.

Every modern EV already uses braking to recharge the battery, extending the range and making them especially efficient in city driving.

Personally I drive a Honda scooter, I don't even have a car license and would never spend my money on expensive cars. Since I don't care about cars or luxury. Sure I admire how certain cars look, but I wouldn't buy one. Cause like even the OP already said, cars are just for transportation. If somone wants to show off with a car, just go ahead. I rather spend my money for other things.

Bikes in many cases are better for Indonesian roads. In Bandung a 3 minute ride on a motor could be over an hour in a car.

Sure thing. And strangely enough I never feel nervous in traffic with a bike, but wouldn't dare to drive a car here.

Yeah. Also, the more lanes the more "chaos" you have, especially at times when there is not too much traffic. At rush hour you don't have a lot of space anyway. As a car driver you always have to look out for everything, bikes from the left and right, back and the ones who come towards you using the wrong side, bikes that squeeze through every little space you give them. Anyway..i think everyone who lives here knows what Iam talking about...

The carbon footprint of the charging would depend on the source of electricity. If it's dirty coal burned without efficient scrubbers then it's still a significant carbon footprint. Apart from the carbon emissions we also have to factor in the environmental and social costs of producing the materials needed for those batteries. Those costs are high and there are plenty of examples close at hand.

Wife and I test drove an Ioniq 5 with no intention to buy one. Over 700 million and a battery replacement... 350 million that will come at some point. Would you buy a gas car that needed a new engine in 10 years or so at a cost of half of the car new or a whole decent gas burning car brand new? Dirty energy all over Indonesia, you aren't doing the enviroment any favors going electric here. By the time you get ahead on carbon emissions, it's time for a new battery and you get to reset the carbon emissions clock again. Plus you have a toxic battery to do something with.
