I'm looking to get my dad a brand new car for his birthday. He lives in Jakarta and doesn't want to move out of Indonesia to stay close to our big family. I still don't know what to get him, and there's no concern about budget.

I'm thinking about an EV, but I'd like to hear about your experiences owning and driving EVs in Indonesia. Are there any tax or insurance benefits or disadvantages? What are the pros and cons, including service availability, resale value, etc.?

Personally, I've owned both combustion engine vehicles and a Tesla Model 3 2024 Highlands & a Cybertruck. I love my Teslas, but I also love my Jeep Mohave.

How old is your dad? Will he drive by himself? Is he more into comfort or more the sporty cars?

Biggest advantage i see is avoiding the odd even road restrictions. Where does he live and where is he travelling to?

68, has a driver (mostly for mom), but he enjoys driving for her, he's a car guy. Both retired, they are enjoying life, spending time together, hanging out, and visiting friends and family. He likes his Pajero Sports a lot.

What is the odd? Did you mean odd plate number? My parents have several houses (to stay close with grandkids) but mostly stay in Jakarta Selatan. So between Selatan and Barat is where they go back and forth the most. Any recommendation on the brand? I personally like Tesla.

I guess you know your dad way better than any of us do, so is he ok with techy stuff?
Will he be the one to drive it? Will the driver (if not your dad ) be ok with techy stuff?
If money is no object then does it even matter about little things like taxes/odd/even plate days /fines?
I can only say for myself that I want a car that is hassle free, comfy & easy to drive and that will last a while because I am not a fan of switching vehicles every 2 minutes (unlike my own dad who has a history of buying a new vehicle every year).
I have no interest in looking sparkly and rich or parading wealth around- hell I sit around in PJs almost every day if not working.
I, therefore , toddle about in a Toyota- (sorry planet) but with a Toyota I know that if anything goes wrong just about any bengkel on any street can deal with it day or night.
It has been hassle free, easy to drive- no, it doesn't make any extravagant statements at all but it doesn't make me a target either, my car doesn't stand out in the crowd (I get enough attention here with blonde hair, so it is nice to have some anonymity behind the wheel).
Other cars have run in to me on several occasions because too many people are busy faffing about on their phones instead of focusing on their driving, but fixing the dings was easy - because 'Toyota'. Do I fancy a Tesla- in theory , yes, I do. Would I go out & buy one - hmmm, I don't think so, I don't want the hassle of finding places that can fix it when some a/hole rolls into the back of it when I'm stopped at a red light.
So, really there are pros and cons for everything with or without budget being a factor.
I guess go with your heart , what do you think your dad would like to see in the garage/on the driveway?
It is a gift, so I am sure he will love it because of the thoughts behind it.

The only EV I see is those big Hyundai ones?
Ioniq ?
Not many Tesla

Most of central jakarta blocks alternate days between 6-10am and 4-9pm depending on your license plate, ie 1st of the month only cars with plates ending in odd numbers....4th only even numbers and so on. EVs are exempt from this.

Only EVs i see are Hyundais and the odd chinese ones.

I spend a lot of time on the roads, & because I am a bit weird when alone in the car, I have this habit of saying aloud the make of each vehicle as it passes/I pass -it helps me to keep focus on long journeys, but somehow embeds in my head the quantities/ratios of vehicles in use on my route- Toyota (& Daihatsu)/Honda are by far the ones I see the most of.
Re EV, I have seen a few Tesla around but certainly they are few & far between- I might see 5 a year. The ones I see the most are those weird little *Mr Bean cars (Wuling) and the Ioniq (Hyundai).

* What my husband calls them

Those ioniq are damn mahal
Can get 7 wulung for the same price almost

SAN FRANCISCO 2023 - Tesla customers have sued the electric car manufacturer because they feel forced to pay high prices for repairs and maintenance of their cars. Tesla has a monopoly on the replacement parts needed for maintenance and repair work. The long waiting times also bother complainants.

Not sure which EV cars are now available in Indonesia. I invested a lot into Asian EV companies for my youngest’s kid education account. BYD and Li are probably the more famous Chinese ones, with Nio and XPEV further behind. Vietnam’s VFS went crazy for a few days when it first hit the stock market, but fell almost 95% pretty quickly.

I’d certainly look for a brand that is well supported in Indonesia.

Considering that at 27/02/2024 only 875 Tesla "cybertrucks" were delivered you were among the lucky fews or ...........

BTW it's a horrible thing ! 🙈🙈

Wuling Binguo gives lifetime warranty on its LFP battery, that should be a pretty good deal.

If the "lifetime warranty" is on the LFP battery, then it's about 10 years (battery lifespan) or 4,000 cycle count.

Some people can be misled into thinking that "lifetime warranty" is forever as long as the car is road worthy.

taxation DOES matter bc I'm a sovereign being and taxation is theft. I will never let the gov control my money. But it's a diff topic bc I LAWFULLY pay $0 😅

Own nothing, control everything,” John D. Rockefeller

I also don't like to go by "heart", it's anecdotal. I like to go by FACTS, why I asked the question, to gather data.

Cars are just transportation, to get u from point A to B. Not sure why you correlated it with looking rich? I'm not buying a lamborghini. It's also not hard to drive an EV, don't get intimidated by the "high tech" label on it. But I have never driven an EV in Indonesia, hence trying to rationalize the decision in the appropriate sub forum for car discussion.

Got you. That's what I thought. Have you perhaps tried BYD? But I think they are big with hybrid, not really full EV

Thank you for providing the most logical answer without any sinister intentions like some passive aggressive MFs here. I'm curious about BYD in Indonesia, their hybrid might be good, but I'm not sure about their full EV capabilities.

They proclaimed they sold more than Tesla, but if you look at their data, the majority are hybrids. They didn't really sell more EVs compared to Tesla. They also don't have FSD capability

I'm sooo curious on how the FSD handles Jakarta's traffic, especially with the latest version. I have tried both autopilot and FSD. FSD is diff level, autopilot made a lot of mistakes especially when turning on traffic lights it shifted lanes on me.

If you only go by facts and can spend a bit more, then you should buy a Tesla. Seen plenty of them in Batam. I don't know if they are still THE leading company when it comes to EVs but surely one of them. Chinas quality, no matter what car we are talking about isn't quite there yet. Don't know about Japanese models either.
