DON'T PANIC.... well, maybe a little bit.

Given the will o' the wisp nature of COVID-19 I am inclined to think that China's assertion that it has contained the virus is wishful thinking. Once the lockdowns are ended I fear it is just a matter of time before the virus will suddenly breakout large scale again, With all the contradictory expert opinions... there are two types of virus... there is only one virus... 14 days is adequate quarantine time.... Four weeks are needed .... a vaccine will be available in six months.... a vaccine will take at least a year... et al.... it seems authorities are keen to prevent panic by sounding authoritative and optimistic but really we are groping in the dark
 
Indonesian VP endorsing an earlier statement by the governor of NTB, that wild horse milk will prevent corona virus. It is believed that wild horse milk increases stamina and the immune system. But it doesn't come without warning: The VP said that drinkers should be careful that they don't become "wild" themselves.

Of course there are a lot of wild horses running around in Indonesia and especially here in Bali. Then you have to catch your wild horse and persuade it not to be wild while you milk it. Otherwise you might be more in danger of death from wild horse kick to the head.
 
I was checking the H1N1 stats from 2009. It was declared a global pandemic in June, and was estimated to have infected around 770m-1.4bn worldwide that year. Around 300,000 died, and it wasn't just older people. I remember being in Mongolia and all bars etc were shut. There were school closures in the US. It was a pretty major thing. I don't think this coronavirus will reach those figures, but the economic damage it has caused is already many times greater.

Interestingly, at the point that WHO declared it a pandemic, they stopped counting cases, and just used statistical estimations instead.
 
Woke up this morning to the first personal impact of COVID 19. It is spring break for my son, who is in college near Philadelphia (east coast of the continental US). He had gone off with his girlfriend to California for the week to visit her family.

Now his school is saying "don't come back from spring break." They are going to do classes remotely.

We had a family conference call and discussed options. My personal favorite was for my son to come stay with me in Hawai'i (girlfriend welcome too, of course) until this blows over. But the east coast-Hawai'i time difference is pretty brutal for class "attendance," ; California is much better. And the girlfriend's parents understandably do not want her to take off for Hawai'i, while my son and his girlfriend prefer to stay together.

So, my son's girlfriend's parents are getting my son as a houseguest for a LOT longer than planned. I hope he doesn't drive them crazy.
 
I traveled to the field 2 days ago, with chartered flight, but check in still at public airport - very uncomfortable with airport security body check / search with hands to all passengers. His hand might have touched hundreds or even thousands other before me.
 
USA just closed its border to all of Europe, except UK.

Also Tom Hanks announced on his instagram that both him and his wife have COVID-19

I know Indonesia is policing social media for fake news and urging us to follow the link to their health website... but
did anyone else click it open to find no news even after they had publicly confirmed the 1st 2 cases?
I haven't been on it since, but it did not inspire confidence- dare I even say that?
It would be rather awesome if they had a link with info that was up to date.
(Maybe they do now?)
 
Singapore has a population of about 6 million with 178 cases. Indonesia has a population of about 264 million with 34 cases. So Indonesia is 44 times bigger than Singapore, and if we multiply 178 x 44 = 7,832 cases in Indonesia. Is this large number possible at all?

Why not closed for people from UK as well? Because of economic reasons? Or because Trump likes the way Boris 'handle things'? Health risk does not seem to be the reason. There are a few Euopean countries that have a smaller infected people rate (considering the population of the country) than UK. Poland and Portugal for example.

I find it difficult to trust the number of "negative" results coming from the patients tested here.

Just speculating, but maybe Trump is expecting Boris Johnson to implement some sort of lockdown of travel between the UK and the EU? The border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would be a challenge in that case (well, it is going to be a challenge to Brexit regardless of COVID19, but that is a topic for a different thread).

Yes, it is one of the main issues regarding brexit. But to close that border now very suddenly? I don't know if that was wise or how that would work, considering the number of people, vehicles and goods passing that border every day. Many people who work on the other side of the border cannot work anymore, etc.

I have to admit that Trump's arbitrary, haphazard approach to pretty much every policy decision feels even more destructive than usual with the sudden monthlong shutdown of travel from the EU. Predictably, he is already moderating the policy by saying that the travel ban only applies to non-US citizens.
 
Italy's decision of a total shutdown of all business including food stores seems rather unwise. If anything is going to create a sense of panic then closing foodstores is bound to do it. And if other countries move that way then it seems obvious we will get more panic buying NOW as people become scared that they may be caught without food in the house.

On the funny side of things after the panic buying of toilet paper clearing out supermarket shelves in Australia and then police saying no need to panic, it seems some people have gone back to supermarkets with their toilet rolls and asked if they can return them. Woolworths has decided, "No refunds."

Returning toilet paper... LOL!!! I guess they were suddenly flush with supply. These are strange times.
