17 dead in u.s. high school

The law doesn't work ..... In the end nothing is going to be done.....

As I said, I am not optimistic, but will wait until the midterm elections to throw up my hands. A majority of Americans want reasonable restrictions on the types of guns sold, on who can possess guns, and on the process of enforcing the what and who resprictions. That majority includes, I think, a majority of gun owners.

When NRA money becomes a political liability, the gun laws will change. The youth of America could be the catalyst that hastens meaningful change.

I know what they're going for. Most likely mandatory background checks, or banning "assault weapons" and high capacity mags like from 1994 to 2004. It will not make a dent on school shootings nor overall rate of gun death, but at least they feel that they have done something. Until they amend the 2nd amendment, no worthwhile change will happen, just cosmetics.

Such incremental change may pave the way for the realisation, over time, that more is needed, especially when the initial move proves ineffective.

Funny that you think I am a supporter of NRA. Many got my sarcasm in my previous post which asked about where are the good guys with gun. But you clearly didn't or perhaps you like to see things from your own lens than listen to others?

Interesting link from politico though.
Sarcastic statements deserve sarcastic replies. It is amusing and ironic that you and the NRA arrive at the same fact, that there aren't enough good guys with guns (or cowboys as you call them) around to stop all shootings. Since removing guns from USA are impossible, then the only viable option is to add more good guys.

His Highness Trump just signed a memo to the AG....."Just a few moments ago I signed a memorandum directing the attorney general to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns,"
Maybe he's on the right path and taking little steps to get intended results....as a Constitutional change is probably a step too far.
Constitutions serve countries well, and has for the USA, but they need to be flexible to reflect the times we live and not the times when they were written.

False news, mind it does seem possible the way these horrible events are occurring

Just been watching an interview on Fox (Carlton Tucker) where someone was saying in 2002 Germany had a similar massacre of schoolkids and there wasn't anything done. He omitted to mention that since 2002 Germans introduced draconian gun-laws which are probably the strictest in EU. Tucker didn't even blink and allowed the interviewee to spiel venom on any-gun law reform without questioning resources.
Fox News is by definition 'Fake News'. They essentially invented it and have perfected it.

A conversation on another thread made me search and I found this info which I found astounding.
According to below more than 300,000 employees are involved in the gun business and some US$51 billion is generated in economic activity.
This may be difficult for some politicians to absorb.... even tho' they are anti the gun lobby.

Smug assertions that America cannot be degunned are a sad commentary on the state of our democracy.
It's a constitutional democracy where the constitution specifically prohibits the government from infringing on gun rights. I think the word you're looking for is 'factual' rather than 'smug'.

Half the people voted for Trump, and you expect them to ban guns? To change the constitution at least half of Trump supporters must agree with it, on top of everybody else. I have better odds winning the powerball than seeing all guns gone.

It seems those that voted for Trump forgot, or ignored, that he already said he was anti-assault guns.....
"Back in 2000, Trump, in his book "The America We Deserve," said he supported the 1994 federal assault weapons ban. (The law expired in 2004 and was not renewed by Congress.)
"I generally oppose gun control," he wrote then, "but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today's internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record.
"

They also seem to forget, or ignore, he was a Democrat....
"Trump was registered as a Democrat for more than eight years in the 2000s, according to New York City voter records made public during his campaign for president in 2016.
Trump owned up to his years with the other party and told CNN he identified with Democrats during that time because they were more adept at handling the economy."

Trump changes spots quicker and more often than a Chameleon. I wouldn't be surprised if his voters do the same....it will just take a little more time.

About 55% of Republicans own guns. Even if you somehow get all the Repubs who don't own guns to agree with a ban (because they blindly follow Trump), you'd still be short.

I think your mathematics misses a point.
I doubt anyone would suggest banning guns outright...the issue is the availability of guns, to anyone, that can mow down so many people in one assault.
I'd hazard a guess many Republicans, who own firearms, would accept some extra protection against that and vote accordingly.

You were replying to my reply about Waarmstrong degunning America, about actually getting rid of guns in USA. While the discussion went to Trump and his followers, it remains about general gun ban in USA.

If you are only talking about an assault weapons ban, you have quoted the wrong post.

Actually if you wish to be factual, half of the votes did not go to Trump. Aslo in that vein, our Constitution is a living document that has and can again be changed by the will of the people acting through the formal amendment process spelled out in the document itself and also by interpretive regulations, laws and court rulings. Keep in mind that the second amendment, is an amendment itself, and that its has been interpreted over the years by law, by executive action and by holdings of the Court. The amendment can be further interpreted to permit reasonable restrictions that can be fashioned to pass Constitutional muster. "Banning" is a red herring and smug is the right adjective.
