I think this is the saddest statement from the president, We must have armed guards and teachers in school, sad to say what a state for a country to get into when you have to have armed guards to protect innocent kids at what should be the safest place in the world

Australia has just had a 3 month amnesty for handing in guns without monetary compensation and 57,000 weapons including a shoulder rocket launcher have been handed in.

The sheer number of weapons in the USA guarantees continuing tragedy. For all the talk of now having better background checks this will not stem the sad number of killings where small children have found a family gun and shot a sibling. And then panicky reaction when someone thinks an intruder has broken in and it turns out that it was a teenager or other family member coming in very late. Not to mention moments of rage where instead of using fists someone responds to a provocation with a gun.

As for arming teachers? How long before a disgruntled teacher goes nuts and starts shooting?

Strangely enough, it is a South Korean-based church. They are friendly to firearms. I don't know whether it's related to the fact that every Korean male are subject to conscription for 2 years. One of the Moons also owns a firearm company in USA: Kahr Arms.

In Switzerland there is a similar situation, army conscription, they are allowed to take the weapon home and on average 1 out of 4 Swiss own (or have) a firearm.

But the last incident dates from 2001.

I think it has much more to do with the fact there is more scrutiny applied* in the permits and it is not allowed to carry the guns in public.

Besides that, if you would position the population's dedication to the law (including the unwillingness to take things in their own hands) on a scale, the Swiss/Korean/Singaporean/... are probably on one end, with Indonesia at the other extreme, with the USA somewhere in the middle.

*For me, as a foreigner in the US, it was very easy to get a permit for a shotgun after residing in the country for 6 months only. It was practically a formality.

They have guns, but no ammunition at home. Might help in the low number of incidents.
