In response to Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, mass demonstration in support of Palestine are held today (Dec 17, 2017) in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia.

Organized by the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI), the rally in Jakarta is expected to draw tens of thousands to the area around the National Monument (Monas). The chairman of MUI has previously stated that all are welcome to participate, including non-Muslims, citing that this is an issue of human rights. He also called upon boycotting US products and the removal of the US ambassador, should the US government refuse to back down on the status of Jerusalem.

Besides MUI, the Indonesian Church Alliance (PGI) has spoken in support of the demonstration. On Friday in an inter faith forum, representatives of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the PGI, the Bishops Conference of Indonesia (KWI), the Indonesian Buddhist Delegation (Walubi), Council for the Confucian Religion in Indonesia (Matakin) and Nichiren Shoshu Indonesia (NSI) released a joint statement condemning Trump's decision.

Dubbed as "Aksi Bela Palestina 1712" referring to today's date, the demonstration is attended by many government figures, including Minster for Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim and DPR Vice Speakers Fahri Hamzah and Fadli Zon. Ironically, the latter attended a Trump campaign rally in 2015, snapping selfies with then candidate Trump.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has strongly condemned the move by Donald Trump, saying that the unilateral statement by the US is against several UN resolutions and threatens stability in the region. He also has ordered his Foreign Minister to summon the US ambassador.

On Friday the government has given its blessing towards the mass demonstration, as Coordinating Minister for Politics, Justice and Security Wiranto stated that the demonstration is in line with the government's position.

The US embassy has issued a statement for its citizens in Indonesia to avoid areas of demonstrations and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. It states that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. It lists the demonstration at the National Monument, and near the consulate in Medan, but cautions that this is not an exhaustive lists and cites possible future demonstrations in Surabaya.

This is why when someone asks where I'm from I frist say the village of mokupa showing my drivers licence. Then when they say no , before I'm going to say Canada. No one hates the canucks

When Bush the younger was president and a lot of American expats lied and said they were Canadian, I always told the truth that I'm American. Even though I disagreed strenuously with Bush's policies, I simply couldn't lie.

Now? I dunno. No one has asked me lately, but while I don't like to lie, I doubt I could ever just say "American." The shortest answer I could possibly give would be, "I'm an American who hates Trump and disagrees with everything he says and does, and I'm so ashamed of American right now." Claiming to be Canadian would be shorter and would be my way of saying the same thing, so not exactly a "lie" in some ways.

Canada is in America! We are from the United States of American not just America. Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and all the countries in South America are from America. Us people from the states need to rember that. So it'
Not really a lie seeing I have been in Canada before lol.

And now that I'm on a soapbox I belive Presidet Bush is probly someone who loves that trump is president now . Cause now he looks like a great president instead of what he was. Understand I was embrassed by Bush but it' real hard to be proud of being from the states where a clown like Trump was elected as President (for whatever reason).
I'm ashamed to tell the truth.

Got to hand it to Trump tho, he is a uniter. He's got the PGI (Indonesian Council of Churches) on the same side of the issue as the GNPF and the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), the groups who staged the episodic anti-Ahok demos of last year.

I think Puspa could honestly say she isn't an American but say "I'm Hawaiian!" as Hawaii was a British protectorate and not even in the Continent of America. The State flag has a Union Jack in the corner.
Everybody could then wave and call "Aloha Puspa", and she can prove by playing gamelan and showing herself doing the hula-hula dance at the same time...see her here as a child...

and now all grown up....

I do not understand why Indonesia is fussing when Saudi Arabia and Egypt gave Trump the green light regarding Jerusalem
Let me try a wild guess, Sul1995... perhaps it is because Indonesia is a sovereign country and not a province of KSA or Egypt. Makes sense, no? :)

Hahaha, it makes sense, but this is a religious issue, not a political one.

Well the Arabs have done fuck all for the Palestinians over the years, I recall having a one day strike in support of the Palestinians while working in Saudi, with pay of course, seems to have shuffled the Rohingans on to the back burner

Of all the stupid, thoughtless things that Trump has done - this one really takes the cake. Besides being a complete waste of taxpayer money, and future expenses related to security, and a host of other issues - he has potentially endangered the lives of US citizens around the globe.

But the real question is - why??? What agenda is being fulfilled, or strategic initiative does this decision possibly help? No one is benefiting, and as far as I can tell, even Israel will incur new problems. There are other thoughts on this, but they go pretty deep. If it's true that the Saudis have given tacit approval to move forward on this, then it sort of answers the question of whether Palestine will ever become a country. It then also suggests there are other deals going on under the surface which are more important to Saudi Arabia, than Palestine sovereignty. Okay - better stop before I start sounding like a conspiracy theorist...

In any case, I hope the new president in 2020 (which is 99.99% likely not to be Trump), reverses this decision.

A Trump Tower in Jerusalem perhaps?

I think it is reasonable to suspect that Trump's decision was motivated, at least in part, by the possibility of financial gain. Keep in mind as well that Trump has not demonstrated any depth of understanding of the policy or political implications of his decisions on the international stage.

What his decisions have demonstrated is that he is motivated at the most basic emotional level to act or rather angrily react to the slightest provocation. His vanity and ego, I am guessing, can be and were manipulatively stroked to produce the action in favor of a policy shift long desired by Israel. Check Benjamin Netanyahu's nose; I wager it has shit on it.

I guess Trump is just following the law of the land:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_Embassy_Act

You are correct...that is exactly what Trump did.
However, that law has been reviewed every 6 months since 1998 by every President, including Trump on 1 June 2017, and been waived in recognition that it would not enhance the security of USA.

from wiki....."Since this provision went into effect in late 1998, all the presidents serving in office during this period have determined moving forward with the relocation would be detrimental to U.S. national security concerns and opted to issue waivers suspending any action on this front. However, a re-assessment has to take place every six months. In response, members of Congress have begun to include language to do away with the President's exclusivity in making the determinations or flat-out remove the waiver provision completely from the Embassy Act altogether."

So the fact is that USA Congress determined that Jerusalem was the Capital of Israel and it really wasn't all Trump's idea.

BTW.... latest news is USA vetoed a UN security resolution on Jerusalem. The first USA veto in over 6 years.

Dont say that, everyone(well the media) said that he wouldnt win and guess who won?
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/upshot/presidential-polls-forecast.html

Also I think theres something up behind the scenes like you said, something is being traded. If I was the goverment, THIS is the time to do outwardly unpopular but secretly beneficial trades n deals. Tell Trump to suck up all the hate, and in 25 years after we will talk about how he boldly pretended to be an asshole (well maybe not pretend...) inorder to get somethings done that never would have been possible!
