Compared to other of what passes for Russian food it's not bad.
Then we're lucky. Our Our Russian neighbors in our compound never invited us for dinner even though we invited them several times. They also never participate in potluck brunch gathering.

Talking about inventive and somewhat bizarre ways to make money: What I’ve seen here in my family in law, is the purchase or build and keeping of (empty) dwellings just for the sarang burung walet.

These edible (swallow’s?) bird nests are considered a delicacy and go for quite a lot of money. It sells for up to $1,000 per kilo.

It is just a matter of time before people find this source of income. People could easily come to steal it before the owner manage to harvest it. This is especially true when the house is empty.
This is the problem with this type of assets.

So, objectively speaking cava is Spanish fizzy wine and champagne is French fizzy wine? Which is really better? Are either better than prosecco, the Italian fizzy wine? I think that is my favorite.... not really into fizzy water to be honest. I prefer the normal stuff...

Side note, we're speaking English and plebian is an English word but it is derived from the Latin "plebeius" if dictionary.com is to be believed. :) (https://www.dictionary.com/e/word-of-the-day/plebeian-2019-08-14/#:~:text=English plebeian, adjective and noun, everyday” and was usually disparaging.)
I have tried various bollies cava brut, sparkling wines as well as dry/doux champagne from various brands such as Bollinger, Moet and Chandon, Dom Pérignon, etc but I can not even tell the difference. But to be fair I am not the wine, bollie testers so can not make a good judgment. So call me cheapo and I will take it as a compliment.

By the end of the day champagne is still sparkling wine. It is specifically named as champagne to protect and maintain monopoly of French vineyards farmers under the rules of the appellation. It is the same with the taste of caviar and flying fish eggs. Having tried both, to me caviar tastes horrible.
I fully agree with the statement status food, drink, supply and Demand law applicable to caviar or champagne.

If you travel to Makassar, flying fish eggs is abundant and quite cheap and fresh. It used to be very expensive when it was only for export to rich countries such as Japan, South Korea. But nowadays it is abundant and even ordinary local people could enjoy "flying fish eggs pepes" and various fresh seafood such as lobster, king prawns, calamaris with affordable price.
This restaurant (rumah makan) is even cheaper

It's been a long long time since I've been there but the food was the worst part of Russia in November. The dark bread and tea were good though; I pretty much lived on that.

There is always that other special delicacy, not so rare: dead lizard in bottom of coffee cup.
I was delighted (NOT) to experience it , yet again early this morning!
I just can't seem to leave my coffee unattended for long without the little critters doing their suicidal swim.
A new delicacy! Kopi Cicak. :)

Out of curiosity, I try to find information regarding "Kopi Cicak" and I found this video / article

Based on the article::
  • House lizard likes warm, moist place and the area around a cup of coffee is ideal for it. It might be in some occasions they get slipped on their way closer to warm, moist place and thus fall into the cup.
  • They might be a specific type of small house lizard who like sugar, a cup of coffee have sugar in it.
It is a logical explanation but this is not a scientific article that carry some weights, so it should be taken with a pinch of salt.

While people might drink the "kopi cicak" unintentionally, people in Indonesia, tourists, foreigners do drink coffee mixed with shits come from animal shithole intentionally and pay a premium price for it. Yes it is true ....

In the future people might be selling beverage mixed with pees, urines and package it as an exotic drink sold for a premium price. The people who have curiosity will still be buying it

Well, my experience with cicaks in my house is very recent and I took care of this 'problem'.
I know those cicaks hide under or behind the 'kulkas' and I place a 'Cap Gajah Lem Tikus Papan Trap' under the kulkas. Or at night I place one in the sink. Guaranteed success.

Well do not be too sure about that but for the time being, it might be ok. It is the same with setting up a mouse trap. While you solve the current problem, another one might come in the future.
House lizard is the same with mice, flies, they contaminate any food/ drink left unattended and uncovered. Prevention might be better by covering almost any unattended food/drink.

Those cicaks go for the drinks or in my case the sink, because they are thirsty.

it is not mixed with their shit at all, they eat the beans and the stomach acid strips the bitter hard outer shell of the bean so when they shit out the digested beans, they can be washed and roasted to get the full favour of the bean

waiter my coffee tastes of mud
yes sir it was only ground this morning

Toaster & coffee cup seem to be their hiding place of choice in my house... the sink used to be, but I now leave a wooden spoon or a dish cloth strategically placed for them to make their escape.
Light fittings seem to be the egg laying choice. Even when I think the fitting is flush to the ceiling, I have no clue how they make their way in. We recently had to replace a light fitting & there must have been 30 eggs nestled (squashed) inside it.
Another curiosity is how this country functions at all considering the lack of being able to give out specific, detailed, important information- such as - don't travel the 100 miles tomorrow, we don't need you. Or, you did this or this happened, can we talk about it... instead it is left to fester for months & months & then comes up when it is way too late to make any changes.

Yea, it seems to be very difficult to be direct and to the point.

The whole language also accommodates that; if you ask a 70 year old woman if she has children, she might answer “belum” 😳

A reason why I sometimes prefer to communicate in English. I’m also not so fond of repeating everything three times as “saya dari Jakarta Pak” “ah, Jakarta” “Ya Jakarta”
