Wonders and curiosities

The trip include caviar tasting. Dont like it; one of the most terrible thing I've to swallow.
You made the link between caviar and the bird nests!

It’s probably an acquired taste, as with so many things. I kinda like caviar, not because it’s rare but because of the silty taste and soft creamy texture. The eggs of the lumpsucker are definitely not as good.

The cod used to be an inferior fish, good for the cat. And now it’s already €24,50 per kilo.

Back to I wonder ... regarding the so called 'satpam' .. you see them everywhere ... but don't have any authority ... I even have to step up addressing foreigners and (rich) Indonesians to not act or do what they are doing, like bringing 'anak-anak' into the gym.

Try the Patagonian Toothfish then. Enak!

Or for 3 times the price, I recommend Chilean Seabass

Why? Call me a pleb, but it's fizzy wine, isn't it?

Er no. One is Spanish. One is French.
Pleb. From the Latin Plebian.
Stick to sparking water and pretend!

So, objectively speaking cava is Spanish fizzy wine and champagne is French fizzy wine? Which is really better? Are either better than prosecco, the Italian fizzy wine? I think that is my favorite.... not really into fizzy water to be honest. I prefer the normal stuff...

Side note, we're speaking English and plebian is an English word but it is derived from the Latin "plebeius" if dictionary.com is to be believed. :) (https://www.dictionary.com/e/word-of-the-day/plebeian-2019-08-14/#:~:text=English plebeian, adjective and noun, everyday” and was usually disparaging.)

There is always that other special delicacy, not so rare: dead lizard in bottom of coffee cup.
I was delighted (NOT) to experience it , yet again early this morning!
I just can't seem to leave my coffee unattended for long without the little critters doing their suicidal swim.

Maybe too much cava?

Are you saying that you like salad with your copious amounts of fizzy Spanish wine?... Bit early for me, but I guess that it is five o'clock somewhere...

I think one thing that amazes me about living here is expats themselves. I always feel like I have to check myself before I make invalid judgments. I'm always comparing things to how they were when I grew up or what they are like in the UK. When I go back, I realize that I am making comparisons between things that exist in Indonesia now, to how things were back in the UK in 2010. The UK has moved on without me in the last 13 years. Essentially, what seems obvious to me, isn't really that obvious at all to other people.

Likewise, I think that what might seem like obvious cultured knowledge is often not that obvious. One man's fizzy wine is another man's Champagne. One man's Caesar Salad is another man's "Caeasr" Salad. And one man's appeal to the higher Latin language over English, does not seem an obvious choice. To me, the average cava and prosecco taste as good as the average champagne. Are the grapes grown in France objectively better than those in Spain or Italy, or any other wine producing part of the world? Is it the techniques or the terroir? Genuinely keen to learn something here.

Those lid covers for the cups that are prevalent here do have a purpose! Sometimes local knowledge wins hehe.. Most of the time... :D

I always forget to use them... I have a collection of them in the back of a kitchen drawer somewhere

Ouch. I never use them either but currently live in an apartment. Starting to feel cramped though and would like to live in a house again, so will try to get used to using them again. To prevent the boiled dead lizard juice scenario hehe

Yeah. Objectively speaking some Prosecco’s or Cava’s are better than many Champagnes. And are cheaper.

I think those covers are disgusting. That soft plastic is also hard to clean. Days in baking soda.

Both my tastebuds and wallet agree with you. I'm sure that there is plenty of good Champagne, don't get me wrong. It's just not a good assumption that something is better because it is famous or from a particular area. My mum always made "Buck's Fizz" with cava at Christmas when I was a kid. Wouldn't do it to a good bottle of anything, but not a bad way to get sozzled on the cheap ;).

Since we were talking about (literally) ‘dirty’ money in another thread I was thinking about this:

In many western countries it’s obviously completely normal to keep your shoes on when you come home. And sitting on the sofa or even bed with your ‘street clothes’ is also not considered a problem.

My wife already freaks out if I put my wallet on the bed.

When we have visitors from abroad and I see how (both sides!) react when the other does or does not do something is rather amusing.

I feel you may be missing out on something here. Sarawak it was common to see dead lizards and other critters in bottles being sold for curing all sorts of ailments. Not sure about the taste but I feel perhaps you should brave up and try coffee with dead lizard. Could it taste worse than coffee beans coming out of cat poo?
