Visa Options for ex-WNI (Vitas, Kitas, Kitap)

I figure I'll put this here. But in the last week or so, I finally had my Kitap issued. And yesterday, it was the turn of my KTP-OA to be issued so I can now officially get off the Annual Immigration Stress Bandwagon.

Just want to say thank you for this forum, in particular this thread for getting the gears moving in my head. Shout out to @dannyboy and the agency he recommended in this thread's opening post. Having the right agent helps a lot.

The additional twists and turns, or should I say the additional runaround, in my story was that
I had been eligible to apply for a Spouse Kitap since 5 years ago but my old agent did not like the idea of me only using their services once every 5 years if I had a Kitap. They would tell me every year when I asked if I could apply for a Kitap that I had just "Missed the window for applying, there would not be enough time, and you should extend the Kitas first and safe the Kitap application for next year". Something smelt fishy when one occasion, after my Kitas was done, I told them I want to apply for my Kitap straightaway only to be told, with 11.5 months until my Kitas expires, that I had once again "missed the window for applying for a Kitap".

When I told them I want to switch to a Spouse Kitas en route to a Spouse Kitap, they tried to bluff by saying "The first step is an EPO but an EPO simply means that you'll have to leave the country in 7 days, you have to be away from your family.". I countered with "Yes, but I can put in my Spouse Kitas application in that 7 days and not have to leave." The only credit I can give this old agent was that they stepped aside peacefully and accommodated my EPO when I said the above.

Well done! Enjoy your 4 years of visa stress free life...

I went to Depok Immigration today. The same exact officer who’d told me that I would need to wait for 2 years to get my Itap, said this today, “Oh, you don’t need to wait at all. You can apply for it as soon as you get your Itas.”
Was I surprised that he gave me a different piece of information?Nope.
Was I upset because I wasted 2 whole years because of him? You bet I was, still am.

He didn’t even remember me, I didn’t have the energy to argue. I asked him why there’s no clear information available, why even the immigration website isn’t working. He just said that it was better to go directly to the immigration office for any questions.

And I was told that I had only until tomorrow to put my application in, since my Itas expiry date is 22 March.

I am really bummed.
I hope things work out for you.

I just contacted 2 visa consulting services, they say that I have to stay on KITAS for 5 years before I can apply for KITAP ... they said only someone who's married to Indonesian citizen can get KITAP immediately after they get KITAS ... I was really bummed when I heard that from the first agency, so then I contacted another agency but they said the same thing ...

For work/investment,, minimum 3 years of uninterupted stay, meaning you need to enter in the 4th KITAS.

For marriage-after 2nd year of marriage, meaning you can immidiately after first KITAS if your marriage was 2 years before.

After 5 years of uninetrupted stay you can apply for citizenship.

I applied for C318 VITAS ... no intention of working in Indonesia. Not retired either; only looking to get permanent residence. I am referring to Tinoz's comment (and some comments before that) that seem to indicate that the process to get KITAP can start immediately after getting the KITAS.

For 318 you can get KITAS and next day apply for KITAP.

I hope you are right

I just got my VITAS today (via the agent) and I am still in US right now, hopefully once I get there I can easily convert it to KITAS and then KITAP

First, it is not 5, it is 4. Second, 318 can go straight after KITAS.

  • Diaspora Visa can be granted for a duration of five or ten years
  • enabling the diaspora to view their homeland as a place where they can work.
Cost : IDR 12,000,000
Statement of commitment that must be accomplished within 90 (ninety) days from the date of arrival, such as:
  • Purchase of Indonesian government bonds worth US$35.000 (thirty five thousand US Dollars), or
  • Purchase of shares or mutual funds in publicly listed companies in Indonesia worth US$35.000 (thirty five thousand US Dollars)

Interesting ... can this really be used to work without an additional work permit?

This is vague

Carry out employment-related activities or attending education, as long as it has been reported to Immigration (using the multiple activity reporting process).

It's for ex indonesians who return with a foreign citizenship and want to become WNI again

A small niche

True. But this is the ex-WNI subforum so it is relevant 😉

I guess we will never know for sure until someone actually tries this. Even if a niche for now it would be interesting to see if this eventually morphs into something similar to the Overseas Indian status

For clarification purposes,

It is true that the Diaphora Visa is specifically designed for Ex-Indonesians. However, regaining nationality and becoming a WNI again is not obligatory. This distinction is emphasized by its classification as a VISA, not a naturalization process. Obtaining this visa doesn't necessitate renouncing dispora's foreign nationality to reacquire Indonesian citizenship. It's essential to note that the regulations concerning dual nationalities remain unchanged, and the Naturalization law has retained its status since long ago; So there is no need for the introduction of new laws or regulations for naturalisation purpose.

The initiative mentioned in the press conference appears to mirror the concept of "Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)". Both Indonesia and India disallow multiple nationalities. However, the OCI concept has been in existence for a considerable period, allow OCI who include skillfull OCI working in silicon valleys in the US for instance to work in India without a need for a work permit, as well as the right to own property in India. But it is not clear yet how far the OCI concept will be implemented.

From my perspective, this represents a significant breakthorugh for Ex-Indonesian, Children of Mixed Marriage, given that the required investment is considerably lower than the alternative routes. Furthermore, funds could be actively invested rather than being placed in a guaranteed deposit scheme. In essence, individuals have the option to invest directly in IHSG in Indonesia. Investment in IHSG is more secure with a high likelihood that returns will surpass the inflation in Indonesia.

Also considering there are estimated six millions of Indonesian Diaphoras, and on the top of that there are also children from mixed marriage who are still iving in Indonesia, the people who might benefit from this scheme is not small, but sizeable.

There is also a small discussion here:

I mean for people who don't read the title and get confused about digital nomads and diarrhoea

Hi guys, does anyone know if the 318 visa still exists? Or has this replaced it? This visa just seems too expensive as it's asking to purchase a bunch of govt bonds or shares. Sorta regretting not applying for the 318 a few years ago if this is the case...
