Imagine you have a very expensive pair of shoes bought in Jakarta. You take them abroad and bring them back - good luck trying to avoid paying tax on them unless you keep receipts for everything you buy.

The Ministry of trade regulation No. 26 year 2023 specifically refer to the restrictions on imports of Passenger Luggage Purchased from Abroad. Common understanding dictates that what you are wearing is neither luggage nor an imported item unless they make it up.

What about designer underwear that people are wearing? A single piece of Victoria's Secret fantasy lingerie could easily surpass the US$1m mark, greatly dwarf the US$1,500 limit. Keep in mind this is categorised as Textile ready items which is only limited to five including the one in your suitcase. Are they going to ask the people to strip off ??
But I agree a few custom and duty officers might be using this opportunity to increase their income.

I am aware that people are not allowed to film in the custom area as it is not a public area. But if this has become a common practice of extortion, a few people who determine to catch them, might be using a hidden camera and make it viral on the social media.

Iam pretty sure that this topic will disappear again soon. As some people said, if you look behind the clickbait headlines, how much of this is really new (also compared internationally) or even logistically or logically possible (if we assume the worst case).

I know it can't be compared, but it was the same with the sex outside of marriage laws. It made a few headlines, also internationally, but nobody mentioned that laws like this have been around forever. In 2008 me and my then girlfriend where also rejected at one smaller hotel, cause we didnt have a marriage certificate. Others took us .
And as I understand the new version of the law seems to be an improvement.

Anyway, not comparable but my point is, people like new headlines and chase the next pig through the village (as we say in Germany), but in the end things might just not be that different than before.

Sorry no I meant recently like the "new" Dubai 2005/2010 etc (I was there from 1992)
Once Dubai opened up to tourism bigly then they started allowing global brands albeit "franchises"

The same way there is no original real Ralph Lauren here only "Polo RL"
And even Chanel L'Oreal etc wasn't the real one I think for cosmetics or something (I'm talking like 5 years ago+)

I've been wearing the same jeans I bought from Goodwill since 2018 and my "Lefi's" from Cibaduyut fits me just fine...shoes..same ones I've used for a while..I'm just disappointed that till now that 2.25 Liter alcohol max plan (equivalent to 3 bottles of wine) never come to fruition...thank goodness I know a couple folks that can give me discounts...
