Mosque loudspeakers

I will also try to remain optimistic about the new rule implementation.
One other factor they should consider is the increase of work from home and the issues with noise disturbance. The amount of conference calls that have had to be postponed because of loud background noise from mosques and not during normal prayer time.

Volume in our neighborhood still the same, could be defiance or not having the instrument to measure it.

So far, the sound level is about the same where I live. I'd say short term it'll be Warm Warm Shit Chicken like they say....volumes might reduce a bit....gradually it'll go back again.

Sure it's a competition. Buy a block out of town where there is no one.. I did and then a Catholic Spanish had to buy the block next door and make a gudang / industrial workshop. He has no sense of decency and cares little about sleeping at 10 pm. His dogs bark incessantly night and day... So, I am saving for a masjid myself. I will tour the country finding the worst old men and kids and recording them. When I build my masjid with the speakers facing his place, I will with delight be broadcasting my collection of adan's for him....

Unlike a Masjid, you can always try and reason with your neighbor about what you find offensive.

Tried that... Even called the police when we had guests who complained about the noise. We saw the police pass by on the way there and then they didn't turn up to our place so we went to find them. They were drinking beer that had been provided by the neighbour and quite a scene ensued, as my wife a very devout muslim was very annoyed about the whole situation. Even though a negotiated outcome was supposedly reached, he has not upheld the agreement that was no machinery after 10pm and the dogs kept on the other side of his property... In fact as I am writing this I can hear his dogs going beserk again. So it's on with the stereo system ... but that just drowns out the dogs and he probably enjoys the music. It seems that the only relief will be when we have as much noise pollution as he does and then renegotiate...

No differences in volume in my neighborhood.

Same here. The noise in our neighborhood became even louder for a few months now...but that is less due to loudspeakers but more because of all those Lato Lato out there 😂

But at least there are some funny videos about them.

My wife denied that she gets more grumpy during fasting. To which I responded with a hearty laugh. I said I get a holiday at a nice hotel if the grumpy level goes up!

I know mosque’s azan volume and frequency sometimes increase.

I remember years back when Dan was DanfromAche. He mentioned something about that if someone wanted to approach a Mosque concerning the level of their speakers that the only way to not get beat silly by thugs in a most holy Islamic way, is to quote the Koran where it mentions prayers are presented in a soft manor.

Yea but it’s extremely important your Muslim neighbors do that. Otherwise it’s 2 years in the slammer as with Ahok; you can’t refer to texts from Koran or Hadiths.

Here we are almost 2 years into this thread and it appears that not much has changed. I think I have said it before but complaining about Mosque loudspeakers in Indondesia is equivilent to complaining that the taxi drivers in Spain speak Spanish. It's just the way things are and you will get just as far complaining about either.

If I were Muslim, I would -just like the old guy in Aceh- sue the hell out of them. He got results.

But I’m not so I can’t. And to show even more defeatism; the good friends and neighbors who are and also grumble to me in private, are too afraid to complain or take action and be called a kafir or bad Muslim. 🫣

What many people don’t seem to understand, is that even from the own religion there are very clear rules; only used for a call for prayer, not for preaching, no children allowed. Etc.

But the guidelines from the Ministry had the opposite effect; it is much louder and much more often since then. As examples; now we have preaching via the loudspeakers every Tuesday and Thursday evening next to Friday lunchtime of course. Saturday and Sunday it’s often karaoke time for the kids. Consistently not only before the prayer, but also after the prayer there is singing. And I can go on and on and on and…..

As said so often over here; if you go to Dubai, Malaysia or even Morocco etc. you won’t encounter this. It’s just a matter of time before Bali will be the same btw.

I moved from Kuningan to Menteng and no longer hear any mosques. Somewhere plays the national anthem at 6.50 each morning which I hear and find quite sweet (and if I'm still laying in the bed at that time its a nice reminder to get the hell up). Also at my office (in manggarai area) I used to hear mosques but dont anymore. So amazingly I seem to be living/ working in a noise-from-mosques free bubble in Jakarta right now.
To balance this out I have an elephant living in the apartment above me who seems to like to walk around exactly when I am trying to sleep.

You’re lucky you found a bubble @gemima . Was in Kota Tua and you‘d expect that over there if would be rather moderate. The opposite, it was worse than ‘at home’?! We couldn’t talk and understand each other and the sellers for half an hour, it was much more than a 100dB.

Those kids' singing sessions on Sundays are brutal. If anything was guaranteed to make someone have bad thoughts about a religion, it would be that.
I'm pretty sure abusing Mosque loudspeakers for those kind of things is haram, so unfortunately those who do it will probably pay for their sins in their "next life".
Also I have found that earplugs don't really work, but the best approach is to use white noise solutions, so for example a noisy air conditioner or box fan makes noise at the loudspeaker frequencies so can cover up the sound (up to a point).

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned the dawn prayer "wake up call". My body clock always wakes me up around 4 AM to go to the toilet and usually this coincides with the announcement on the local Mosque's loudspeaker. Usually it says "It's now 4 AM, dawn prayer is in x minutes, I'm now calling on those still asleep to wake up and come down to the mosque and pray in congregation. Dawn prayer coming up, everybody. Dawn prayer."

I have no complaints because I'm lucky enough that the guy who's in charge of this announcement does it so well in the sense that the announcement isn't blaring over the loudspeaker and it just sounds like he's speaking almost soothingly into a loudspeaker. So I've got no grievance.

I think many posters are referring to the first azan, which is between 3:30am-4:30am which can be the most disturbing one, if you’re sleeping.
