Mosque loudspeakers

For the first time ever, Saudi Arabia has announced something I agree with. They are going to restrict the volume of mosque loudspeakers following complaints from residents.

Can we expect those nice people at the (former) FPI to vigorously implement this new system in Indonesia too? After all it is a direct order from the mothership.

I was always taught in loudspeaker school that the volume is only supposed to be sufficient to be heard from the next nearest mosque so that when you are out in the fields taking pics for the 'gram etc, that you can always hear the nearest mosque and know what time it is etc etc

All hail our master. Mr Mike Rophone.
May he reverberate in peace
He was quite strictly monitored, you know?
In the end, I had to drop him. Always buzzing on about this and that, trying 2 turn tables on me. Just not where it's at.

If only they'd just stick to the adhan, like before. I seem to remember being quite relaxed by them when I first visited in the early 90's.

I live in a fishing village in S/E Java , We've got 4 Mosque's here . They start at 3am for 20-30minutes then 4am 20-30minutes then again at 5am for as long as they want . All on full volume trying to out-do each other . They can go all day if there's something happening or someone has died . Then there back at 5pm for up to an hour , full volume again . Heard a women complained about it in Jakarta , she was told there only supposed to do it for a few minutes as a call to prayer . Then they locked her up for complaining and gave her 40 lashes for being rude to Allah and Mohamed the !!!!!!!!! , sorry prophet ! Even wakes at peoples houses , the Imam gets on his little PA system ,full volume again . They'd be locked up in Australia for noise pollution !!
Sounds like ( pun intended ) time to move.

Whilst it is a serious problem this is just not true. Perhaps you are confusing Jakarta and Aceh but I don't think this punishment has happened in Aceh for complaining on mosque noise.... Other things yes.

We do not criticize the Noble Religion here. Check @Helpful Herbert post.

Jusuf Kalla has just become my favourite politician
He did that a few years ago. Had them all reduce the volume. See how that aged. Those loud speakers are not for call to prayer, they are to compete with the mosque down the road and drowning out all inbetween.

It reminds me of the loudspeakers in communist countries where they would recite slogans praising Lenin etc. People would just tune out, and take it as another daily annoyance. In the 90s after the overthrow of communism it stopped. I don't think anyone missed it. Perhaps one day the same thing will happen here .....

Don't hold your breath!

My 'favorite' is when they have a kid (I swear they're only 9 years old) screaming prayers through the loudspeaker...probably he/she did mom and dad proud. Ironically I had a worker/tukang came by my house many years ago in the early morning for a project...and when I opened the door he was smiling I said whatsup? He just smiled and said nothing pak...the church bell 'neng neng neng neng' was berisik....a bell that was 'noisy' for only 1 minute at 8AM vs loud prayer at 4 in the morning....but I didn't wanna argue with him on that...

I have that 5 times a day. Can't pronounce the words, gets stuck, mouth is right on the mic, and yelling at the top of his voice. Drives us crazy.

I do believe that abuse of mosque loudspeakers for anything other than a 3-minute call to prayer* is haram, because it disturbs the masyarakat and causes noise pollution, as well as increasing negative feelings and violent acts towards Islam. Those who force kids to scream into the microphones are double haram, as they are making kids commit a sin. Therefore I hope one of the scholars issues a fatwa on this behaviour, so that the souls of those doing it can be saved, and order can be restored to society.

[I would argue that even for the call to prayer the use of loudspeakers is haram, since much better technical solutions are available these days]

Oh my, how many islamophobes in one place...you should enjoy the prayer calls and not look down to your neighbors. This is just the way they do things.

I enjoyed the prayer calls for some years, and I moved to another area. No more enjoying prayer calls.
