Indonesia’s Jokowi Builds a Family Empire

I always wondered what Jokowi promised Prabowo to get him to join the government back in 2019, and to stop his attacks. Now it has all become clear:
1) Jokowi supports Prabowo for president 2024
2) Jokowi's son is on the ticket as VP
3) Jokowi's brother in law (head of constitutional court) approves the rule change to reduce the age limit for candidates

I can understand he wants to protect his legacy, I only hope that his legacy isn't nepotism. Having a VP candidate with less life experience than a bakso seller or any other random young Indonesian is certainly ... unusual. [a penny for the thoughts of AHY or Sandiago]

Presumably things like the new capital city, the omnibus law, infrastructure, fairly successful economy, reduction in religious intolerance (to some extent), maybe some other things

Infrastructure.
The Belt and Road infrastructure, like the speed train from Jakarta to Bandung (KCJB)?
Well check out this info, just read in the news:

Italy also participated in China's Belt and Road project, as the first EU country and only G7 member. The promise of more trade and better market access was also one of the reasons for Italy to sign up. Although they came home from a rude awakening, because the Italians did not sell more. “If you look at the numbers it is exactly the other way around,” says Alessia Amighini of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies.

Last year, China exported 57 billion worth of items to Italy. Conversely, China bought only 16 billion worth of Italian goods. The trade deficit thus doubled in three years to around 41 billion. "In terms of trade, it was a disaster, and Italy is no exception. Often it is only Chinese exports that increase." Italy will leave the Belt and Road again next year.

How are the trade numbers for China and Indonesia?

My impression of Gibran at many of these staged get togethers with Prabowo and political groups is that he really doesn't look very happy. I suppose it is difficult to turn away from a path that suggests the position of future president.

I wonder if that was all laid out at that rather critical time of Trumpism crisis. Whatever, with Prabowo claiming an election win and dangerous mobs on the street I thought it very astute of Joko to offer Prabowo the position of minister for defence. Crisis ended.

And to buy up all that wasteland in Kalimantan and pronounce it the new capital city

Doesn't Prab and Om Tommy own most of that?

Yes, maybe that was actually his greatest achievement. 2016-17 was the Ahok wars (sounds like a Star Wars movie), with lots of religious intolerance, tension, FPI riots, Anies etc.
And he completely turned it round so that:
  • FPI disbanded or at least very quiet
  • Rizieq in jail
  • Anies or other SARA candidate no chance in the election
  • Ahok got a very high paying job as compensation to the injustice done to him
  • Jokowi gets to extend his influence, through Prabowo

Elite level politics that was.

Jusuf Kalla (JK), who served as the former Indonesian vice president for two consecutive terms, engaged in these activities in South Sulawesi, which contributed to a portion of his wealth. The remaining part of his wealth is derived from government construction and road projects.

The link above where where he launched an attack against several parties. for not getting governmental project using his employees as an excuse. This guy has a large followers, people that could be mobilised to disrupt and cause significant problem, especially in South Sulawesi,

As for Tommy, he is the youngest son of Indonesia's former President, Suharto, while Prabowo is Suharto's son-in-law. Prabowo together with his younger brothers Hashim Djojohadikusumo built their business empire, during Suharto's reign. Notably, Prabowo stands out as the wealthiest among all the candidates for the Indonesian presidency / vice presidency, surpassing any previous contenders in the country's history.

Oh yes, that sleazy fat cat comes from money - connections all the way down (gov't ministers, bank execs, etc.)

Prabowo actually makes me sick to my stomach. One can only watch this theatre with amazement: someone who is COMPLETELY implicated in gross human rights violations during his time in the military, before he was dishonorably discharged (something which, apparently, doesn't disqualify one from a career in Indonesian politics), is pretending to be the best choice to lead a country.

Sickening.

Scary.

Republik Djarum. 🚬🤡

People need to do their deskwork whether one expect this individual to combat corruption?
https://news.republika.co.id/berita...suai-hati-nurani-prabowo-itu-uang-rakyat-juga
Accept money politics but vote according to Prabowo's-conscience-that-is-people's-money-too. It raises doubts about his determination to address corruption.
https://yogyakarta.kompas.com/read/...-triliun-prabowo-subianto-mengaku-kadang-jual His wealth IDR 2Trillion

He and his younger brother are the founders of the Arsari Group, a diverse conglomerate involved in various sectors like palm oil plantations, pulp and paper, mining, and logistics. Although his brother currently serves as chairman, both of them own these conglomerate businesses. It's worth noting that these conglomerate businessmen and politicians profit from exploiting natural resources rather than creating high-end, high-value-added products for export, which speaks volumes about their priorities.

When considering his wealth of IDR 2 trillion, it's worth questioning the nature of his business activities, especially when he has a history of alleged involvement in mobilizing mob riots and collaborating with the FPI and other radical Muslims. Not to mention his current alleged secret deal with these group of people.

As Suharto's son in law, his military career took off rapidly to become a general without direct involvement in any frontline combating. Later he was dishonourably discharged from army.

His political track record is also worth noting. He ran for vice president alongside Megawati in 2004 but lost to SBY and JK. He ran for president as the Gerindra Party candidate in 2014 and 2019 but was defeated by Jokowi and JK, Jokowi and MA, in both instances. Furthermore, he has also faced multiple losses in governorship elections.

There is a noteworthy debate surrounding suspected interference from foreign governments, primarily Western ones, in determining the ideal candidate for the presidency, in order to safeguard their stake in Indonesia's valuable natural resources like nickel, copper, tin, and gold.

As far as I know Prabowo was directly involved with the crisis in East Timor, whether or not one would call shooting civilians and assassinating Timorese activists "frontline combat".

Look at Ganjar's running mate Mahfud - almost the antithesis of Prabowo's ilk?

True, he got involved in various operations in East Timor and Papua (aka Irian Jaya), but have never been seen in the frontline fighting. Keep in mind finishing Indonesian military academy everyone will start his career from Second degree Lieutenant.

He was advancing his military career, without ever having served on the direct combat, confrontation in the front lines open a high possibility you might get killed. In contrast, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and other royal family members from around the world have actively served in the military, participating in direct combat at the frontlines, yet they never reached the rank of an army general. It's worth noting that Indonesia is not a kingdom so he is not part of any royal family.

Throughout his career, he established significant connections, not only with Islamic radicals but also with various mob, riots leaders such as this individual.

Getting involved would make one guilty. Prabowo didn't have to be the person raping and killing citizens personally when he could just give the orders for others to do his bidding. He is well known for being directly involved with human rights offenses and was even barred from entering the US until he became Defense Minister.

Yes, he tied himself to radical islamist groups and used them to do his personal police biddings. The were fully behind him this past election but have thrown their weight towards Anes this election and have publicly cone out for Anes. Prabowo has not said anything about them so if elected, he will call on them again.

Chosing Jokowi's son was a mistake and may be the road to a loss at the polls. There is going to be a lot coming out in the next few months about the judicial system being under Jokowi's influance and the total lack of experience and knowledge his son offers. So far, his plan to help the nation is to improve one Jakarta pasar. When it comes to VPs, Mafud runs circles around the others. He's the only VP selection who would make a qualified president.

I have been in Indonesia almost 3 decades, never heard of Prabowo running for governor, not even once, let alone multiple times.

I understand you dislike Prabowo, but let's not spread false information here.

Another disinformation here, Prabowo is one of the few generals who went to combat in the frontline, he was even injured in battle.

I stand corrected, but I have not come across that Prabowo Subianto get injured on the frontline during his military career. He has been actively engaged in a variety of military operations, including his involvement in East Timor, West Papua conflict, but no record he is getting injured in direct confrontation in the frontline battles, participating in gunfire exchanges. If you come across any information suggesting that please feel free to share it. He received an dishonourable discharge from the military because of accusations surrounding his involvement in human rights abuses in East Timor, West Papua and the kidnapping and torture of pro-democracy activists in the 1998. This is the year where Suharto ended his presidency, after ruling Indonesia for over three decades His presidency came to an end amid widespread protests, economic turmoil, and political pressure.

With regard to the abduction and torture of pro-democracy activists, it was suggested that these actions were undertaken to safeguard Suharto's empire. This allegation is based on his connection as Suharto's son-in-law and his influential role within the military at that time. These pro-democracy activists were outspoken critics of the Suharto regime, family and its practices.

Regarding running for governor, it's possible to confuse him with another individual named Prabowo, but it's important to note that the Prabowo in question is the same Prabowo Subianto currently running for the presidency was running as a vice-presidential candidate and this will be his third bid for the presidency.

It's worth noting that he has recently developed a closer relationship with President Joko Widodo, possibly as a political strategy, since Joko Widodo has a large number of voters but is no longer eligible to run for president. In the past, Prabowo Subianto used to be a vocal critic of Joko Widodo and was allegedly got involved in funding mass protests / demonstrations against the Indonesian government under Jokowi through his close connections to radical Islamic groups.
