FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Indonesia

Sounds like Thohir insisted on restricting Israel's participation. He and his bosses should really have known better than to try that. I expected PDI-P leadership to get their ducks in a row and present a more unified front, which obviously they wouldn't or couldn't do.
PDI-P were a strong voice against allowing Israel to compete while their own sitting president said play. FPI came out against. Ganjar came out against. Palistinian rep said should allow Israel to participate. When asked if the safety of Israel deligation could be garranteed there was no way Thohir could say yes and FIFA already knew that.

Come election what happens? Probably nothing because people forget rather quickly and they will not know who to blame. All will deny and point a finger at someone else. Jokowi seemed to be favoring Ganjar but I wonder if that will change now as well as any support towards his own party? Megawati runs that party with an iron fist so you can bet the party was following her wishes.

The beginning of the end
What next? Ban Tesla from building their factory here because they sell cars in Israel?

Reminds me of the early days in Dubai when you couldn't find Levi"s or Estee Lauder or Graaf diamonds as all Jewish companies

That's what I also always said. What's next? A ban for every country who supports Isreal? That would probably be all of the participating countries. Anyway..it's done.

What you mean with the beginning of the end? What else do you expect to happen now?

Takes years to build up a good reputation
Seconds to destroy it

Who's going to want to do business now or hold an event here and trust Indonesian government not to change their mind or ban people from entering the country

Off topic but this in a country where homosexuality is illegal but every tv show has the gayest campest most flamboyant gays you ever saw presenting

Mudafik. Hypocrites.

Yeah, I didn't want to include any other areas outside of sports but I agree, overall that is a very bad signal.

Hahaha, I always wondered that too. I mean almost every TV comedian looks like he's gay, yet apparently islam thinks it is the worst thing in the world, so who is watching then?

I think this is more about the presentation. Like in the past many western movies had the funny and kinda strange gay character. As long as things don't get "serious" it's still ok. I think not as many people would watch Brokeback Mountain here, also in the west if we are honest. The funny, tacky gay guy is still tolerable.😅

Of course sitting on daddy’s lap she received that indoctrination, it was force-fed together with the havermout. 👨🏽‍🍼

Ah ya. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jacob Cohën 👖undergoes the same scrutiny. 😉

In fact it’s kind of amazing that a non-issue can turn into something like this.

Those are some good points. Since all the main actors pro and con Israeli participartion are PDI-P it would seem that the boss would have told the anti-Israeli dissenters to shut up and get it line. It will be interesting to see the fallout.

Are you sure it's illegal? Other than in Aceh of course.

Btw, the son of Jokowi, the mayor of Solo (he co-owns a club with Thohir so they’re probably pals), has stated that Erick and the PSSI will organize an alternate event. Game(s) or tournament, not sure yet.

Yippee, then they don’t need to cancel the K-Pop band that would give a concert at the end of the tournament…

I love when they blur out the cigarette or cleavage or blood then have 10 mins of tobacco ads with the guy parachuting and racing his car and being sooooo cool

Why not the 50 year old gorengan seller hacking his black tar lungs over the food

Someone has probably already recorded and saved some of the speeches about this and will play it as a reminder as a way to sling mud/make themselves look good.

Alternate event? Unsanctioned with teams participating that would go no further than local. Maybe a short notice tournament with only SE Asian teams or maybe they could put together a radical mass organization tournament.

That K-pop band will get some kind of pay, play or not.

Talking about money and potential losses.

It‘s not so easy to calculate since obviously the ticket sales and broadcasting rights would be income for FIFA.

And the loss of all the side businesses with F&B at the stadiums, hotels, restaurants, transportation etc. is rather difficult to put a number on.

What we do know is that early last year the government disbursed 400 billion rupiah in preparation for the implementation of the World Cup. Then somewhat later in June 2022, Zainudin Amali who was still Minister of Youth and Sports, asked for an additional 3 trillion rupiah from the Government for sports development, which had an allocation of 500 billion rupiah to prepare for this U-20 World Cup. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) injected 490 billion for stadium renovation.

So if the capital expenditure is realized (which is questionable) and we would put everything under ‘capital project and infrastructure spending’, it would be approx. 1.4 trillion rupiah so far. That is approx. $934 million. Now obviously you can make the point these improvements were necessary anyway and/or that they are not really lost investments but it does give an impression of the funding up till now.
