FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Indonesia

Heads will roll for the embarrassment and shame bought on the country

Who the hell thought it a good idea to host a world cup football comp then ban one of the teams? I mean didn't they think it through?

Lets bid for the F1 and ban Lewis.

This is an absolutely huge catastrophe from Indonesia. Now hopefully the backlash starts against all the religious bigots who are slowing the development of this country. I mean banning alcohol from supermarkets is one thing but hosting the 2nd biggest football competition in the world then not letting a team into the country is crazy

Oh well. Now it's done.

Sorry for the millions who will be negatively affected by this

Its gone - and so are all the other sporting events involving Israeli teams (or any event where there is a possibility of Israelis being involved). What an embarrassing mess this is.
I was super surprised FIFA kept the U20 event here after the stadium disaster (I think that alone warranted it being removed from Indo).
I hope some people here learn some lessons from this but I know that they wont.

And what about FIFA? What were they thinking when they picked Indonesia.
To many of us it doesn't come as a surprise that Israel playing in Indonesia was going to be a problem; it was even mentioned in this thread. Didn't FIFA know the anti-Israeli sentiment among the Indonesian people? They should have known.
Personally, I am more surprised that FIFA didn't do their homework properly than that Indonesia is being Indonesia.

Indonesia gave guarantees to FIFA on the safety and equal treatment of all teams and guarantee of no political interference. FIFA decided to accept those guarantees because Indonesia is a big football-mad country which has never had a chance to host a big competition before. There was no prior evidence that Indonesia would go so far as refusing to host a particular team. So how could FIFA reject Indonesia on that basis?

Now they have seen that those guarantees were worthless, and of course FIFA and other world sports bodies will not award tournaments to the country in the future.

Back when Russia and Qatar were first announced as hosts in 2010(?) for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, on another forum one blogger had suggested that FIFA was going to pick a host country in a region previously unselected. This was before everything about the bribes and corruption really came to light.

FIFA probably sees the same with the U20 WC. It could be a good testing ground to see what other events they could host and if not, spread the U20 to places that realistically wouldn't be able to host the main World Cup. That and another way to fill their pockets.

The thing with hosting an event like this is qualifications are basically rolling a dice.

'Just wiped trillions off the Indonesian economy, and will probably be band for qualifying for WC 2026. They have paid the price for mixing sport with Politics and their Religious views.'-From a mate when he heard the news.

Interestingly a lot of the criticism on social media is being aimed at Ganjar Pranowo for rejecting the Israeli team. So he may gain Islamic votes but lose the votes of young people who would like to see the country grow. All the politicians who sat on the sidelines and refused to comment are probably the winners here.
Ganjar has perhaps proved his political inexperience and maybe he is not up to the top job yet. I don't think Jokowi would have made that mistake even when in Solo.

Yup.
There is nothing to gain of course, only to lose

Smart moves by Anies, Prabowo and Ridwan Kamil. I think the latter is more competent than a Pranowo and he got a lot of empathy after his son passed away (drowned in Switzerland). The problem is, he was Golkar (that’s like the FIFA of the political parties here) while Pranowo has been PDI-P.

"Following today’s meeting between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Erick Thohir, FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023™. A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage."

Wow, in only one meeting between Infantino and Thohir, FIFA decides to cancel Indonesia as host of this tournament.
What happened? Did Thohir made Infantino angry? Is Thohir qualified to talk on this wold stage of diplomacy?

My guess is there were a lot of things despite having extra time to prepare: knowing who qualified from Europe last summer, trying to create conditions for Israel, the protests, the various political running their mouths., and probably behind the scenes discussions. which caused FIFA to make up it's mind before the meeting with Thohir. I am sure there were questions asked in the meeting that could not be answered or if answered, weren't satisfactory. Plus Israel probably did some research of their own and shared it with FIFA.

But hey, Indonesia stood up for palestine and will continue to make money donations that probably won't go to helping the ordinary citizens of palestine.

Sounds like Thohir insisted on restricting Israel's participation. He and his bosses should really have known better than to try that. I expected PDI-P leadership to get their ducks in a row and present a more unified front, which obviously they wouldn't or couldn't do.

Clock ticking. No time for chitchat or chatchit (Michael McIntyre fans) or just chitting.

My guess. "Can you guarantee safety etc"
ET "erm no"

Also ET off the record "cancel it and we can blame FPI"

Done. Clean swift brutal. Move on.

Biggest irony? Starting soon. World Beach Olympics 2023. In Bali. Featuring a team from Israel. Go figure.

I know it's under 20 WC isn't this the one England won last time to huge fanfare or was that the U23.

Btw even though it's U20 that's the age at the time the original tournament started qualifiers etc so some of the players could be 22-23+

No, the cut-off date is 1 Jan 2003, so no-one born in 2002 or earlier can play.

Ok must be the other one then

I know sometimes some senior players play in the team's U21 U23 matches for fitness. Some rule about allowed 2 or 3 over age or something

Well that was quick. Seems like Indonesia still isn't ready to live the tolerance they theoretically preach. Not ready to play with the "big ones".

So as I said, goodbye to any international sport events in the foreseeable future, except maybe ASEAN games or something like that. Also goodbye to being seen as serious and trustable partner. I probably make it bigger than it is, but it's a shame. I also not necessarily agree with Israels politic but this is sport.
