FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Indonesia

⬆️ For those -like me- without a JP subscription, I got this from the local press:

The Balinese governor stated that it was in fact a decision by the central government that he actually had nothing to do with it. To make it even more blurred; he necessarily did not even agree personally. Which would be extremely weird since the province of Bali refuses to let Israel play in its territory and communicated that already some time ago. He did not want to reply to any more questions.

The brilliant idea of having Israel play their games in Singapore was deemed not feasible by the Indonesian Football League PSSI. Not only from a logistical point of view which would make it a nightmare but Indonesia was the sole applicant to organize the tournament so involving Singapore would most probably not even be accepted by FIFA.

Side notes:
They know for quite a long time Israël would participate since they were runner up in the U19 championship.
Erick Thohir is meeting with other ministers (e.g. of Sport and Youth) to talk about possible solutions

It looks like right now there are a lot of reasons to assume that Indonesia won't hold any bigger event in the future. Might be even worse and Indonesian soccer gets canceled. Certainly I hope for a good outcome, it's kinda sad that because of a few troublemakers something like this could happen.
There are SEA games and the like, which are bigger than a youth soccer tournament. Anyway it's likely that these matches will proceed.

Funny. Personally I do not care for the game. I know not of the players or organizagion of the game. At the same time even I know this is not just some youth soccer tournament.

You know from a political stand point, if Indonesia really cares about palestine as much as they claim, then they could have used the U20 WC and allowing Israel to play to help with the peace process, two state solution, free palestine, or something in a proactive way. Maybe not set up diplomatic relations with Israel, but maybe some type of mediation.

" With no compromise seemingly in sight, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect that FIFA will soon move the tournament with just under two months to go, and slap Indonesia with sanctions and exclusion from world football. "

At this point, I am almost hoping it gets moved and the only people I feel somewhat bad for the regular people who are now going to be losing an income.

You've got to feel for the young lads on the Indonesian team too. Their big chance on the world stage and their so-called representatives have blown it for cheap, domestic, brownie points ahead of an election. Magic...

President Jokowi held a speech in which he -somewhat late- affirmed that politics and sport should be separated. “I guarantee that Israel's participation has nothing to do with the consistency of our position on foreign politics towards Palestine.”

Jokowi also conveyed a statement from the Palestinian Ambassador Zuhair Al-Shun. "In this U-20 World Cup matter, we agree with the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia that the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has rules that must be obeyed by its members”.

Also, he confirmed Erick Thohir is in talks with FIFA.

He even forced his nepo son to volunteer to be ready hold the draw in Solo, of which he is governor.

The problem is that Jokowi is just about the only one not running for election, and therefore the only one not interested in using this situation to score political points.

Then what is it? It's a soccer tournament for youth. One sport, and not the best players.

Good point. Maybe that will still occur to them.

The Star has some interesting things on what lead to the draw being canceled.

'Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy said on Monday that Indonesia had outlined certain conditions regarding Israel’s participation in the tournament but that the demands had been rejected by Fifa, leading to the cancellation of the group-stage draw.

“We lament that the conditions we demanded were declined by Fifa,” Muhadjir said, as quoted by kompas.com. Without specifying the demands, Muhadjir said they had been made out of consideration for the country’s 1945 Constitution, which states that the nation stands against any form of colonialism.'

It would be interesting to know what those conditions were.

On another note, I wonder how many people realize that there are Muslims playing for U20 Israel.

I don't know but when they title it the U20 World Cup I would have to say it might be a little more important than just a youth soccer match. If not the best players then who is missing from the qualified teams?
