FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Indonesia

What's funny is that israel is included in the European group

Well, they do participate in the Eurovision song contest. 😜 They even won four times!

Turkey is part of UEFA for many decades while you could make the case they should be AFC.

But the whole assignment seems rather flexible, see Australia that moved from Oceania (OFC) to AFC (Asia).

It would be funny if Israel win

While I want them to do well, I am also concerned certain people might encourage some people to do something stupid. Here is hoping Indonesia and Israel aren't drawn into the same group.

I don’t think we can expect a new Munich massacre, but some people would be tempted to try I guess. I’m still somewhat awed by the level of support and the amount of attention that the Palestine situation gets over here. Esp. on rallies and in the kampungs and street collections etc. In the Western world the region only makes the news if there are outbursts of violence with deadly victims.

Yes it's strange how that particular conflict seems to resonate here, but they rarely seem concerned about any other conflicts going on, even islamic ones.
Perhaps for Indonesians that is a very blatant case of good versus evil in their minds in the same way that Russia v Ukraine is for us, so it is easy for them to understand.

I remember there was a lot support for the Uygur and Rohingya muslims for a couple of months each time and then silence. I remember seeing people take up collections for those two groups and the Jakarta Post had something almost daily on their Facebook account. There was a lively discussion in regards to the Uyguy situation on here. I haven't heard anything about the Uygur situation in years. From time to time, there might be something pop up on Rohingya, but not as much as palestine.

Dozens? I remember the Ahok days when there were 500,000 of them. I wonder what happened to the rest - got proper jobs?

Indonesia should expel Israel from the competition. Then FIFA would expel Indonesia from its membership to make the embarrassment complete.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Now even the Balinese don't want them, even though I'm not sure what problem a Hindu would have with Jewish people:

What I have read it is mainly following the crowd on this and it is close to election year.

Problem with that would be Indonesia would probably play the victim card while at the same time boasting how they stood up against the evil Israel and for Palestine.

It would seem that people in Indonesia are forgetting a big thing. Thid tournament us a FIFA sanctioned event and if a hist nation should recfuse a qualified team to participate then FIFA has the right to make future problems for that nation and any representative team. I doubt Indonesia would be favored for histing any event in the future. Another thing. Does Indonesia even realize that refusing a team in an international event will pretty much make that bid for the Olympics null and void.

If this goes as it looks like it will, it basically means that no tournament in which Israel might be a possible participant will be held in Indonesia again. Asia games, SEA games etc. are fine. Olympics, World Cup, any world competition in which there are Israeli participants - no.
The only people interested in furthering Indonesia's efforts to host major tournaments are politicians like Jokowi and a few others. Whereas the people interested in showing the people how anti-Israel they are include basically every politician running for office, and the louder they shout about it the more votes they will get. For organisations like FPI, NU etc. it gives them something to get people out on the streets again. So being loudly anti-Israel and hampering the tournament is basically in almost everyone's interest.

And of course nobody could have known that these kind of things would happen.😅

I hate this mixup of politics and sports. That already got on my nerves when we talk about the WM in Qatar.
If it's like that we better stop all international sport events cause we probably can find some kind of problem or wrongdoing in every country. If this is what Indonesia wants, why even bother to be the host in the first place. Nobody can tell me that Isreal competing was a total surprise and that nobody could have seen this coming. But then again....

Indonesia hosting the Olympics is pretty much null and void as an idea anyway

Unless everyone else decides they don't want to do it and Indonesia is the only country with it's hand up.

In seriousness, I was surprised when I heard Indonesia was hosting the U20 tournament.

Jokowi certainly knew and know how to anticipate it. I believe the few protests that have sprung up have been expected.
Menkopolhukam and his stafsus Ngabalin, confirmed and ensure the security of all participants including israel.
Palestine has openly stated that it is up to Indonesia to decide - fully understood. Even this morning after meeting with the president, the PBNU chairman also had no objections.
So, the show must go on
