What I experienced recently at Ngurah Rai airport can be seen as a microcosm of covid education in Indonesia.
Strict protocol every which way you turn, from the moment you arrive to check in until you land at your destination. Then you go to the smoking room and a bunch of abang2 are in there sitting right next to each other, masks off, chain-smoking.
We will never curtail this thing until people are taught exactly how to take precautions. Back in April of last year I urged my colleague to hold a meeting with me about covid, and she chose to ignore it. The big tub of hand sanitizer I bought for the office was still full after 2 weeks, all in the name of "nggak enak". Acting demure and embarrassed to use free sanitizer?? Wow, facepalm, but how are you not using soap to wash your hands when we were 3 - 4 months into the outbreak? Don't depend on rules to ensure safety, because when people go home or to work they start acting like we're back to normal. Education is not just key, it is downright life or death now.
It sounds like I'm picking on uneducated Indonesians, but suffice it to say this is happening everywhere. Don't pull the "race" card. This is about ignorance, and sadly it's still rampant.
