FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Indonesia

And the loss of all the side businesses with F&B at the stadiums, hotels, restaurants, transportation etc. is rather difficult to put a number on.
Don't forget the merchandisers with piling stocks of WK T-shirts and stuff. They are 'pissed', I guess.

So if the capital expenditure is realized (which is questionable) and we would put everything under ‘capital project and infrastructure spending’, it would be approx. 1.4 trillion rupiah so far. That is approx. $934 million. Now obviously you can make the point these improvements were necessary anyway and/or that they are not really lost investments but it does give an impression of the funding up till now.

It’s very cynical but in fact the COVID epidemic was a blessing in disguise for the huge investments made in the towers of Wisma Atlet specifically built for the athletes of the ASEAN games. Now those empty buildings were available as concentration camp … eh quarantaine center for WNI.

But now post-Covid, who lives there? Are the buildings empty?

Takes years to build up a good reputation
Seconds to destroy it

That's certainly one perspective. Others may perceive the admittedly strange decision to reject israel's participation as one of integrity.

I don't think rejecting Israel's participation 9 months after it was confirmed they had qualified (June 2022) shows much integrity. It shows incompetence. If they had said in June 2022 "now that Israel has qualified we are unfortunately unable to host it due to our constitution (or random other reason)" then, while they may have received criticism they could have claimed the "integrity" part. What would have shown even more integrity would be ... not bidding to hold competitions that might include Israel at all. In the future they will have a lot of integrity and no competitions. That's a win I guess.

Ja, I agree that it could have been handled MUCH better. I was only putting another view out there. You're correct that israel qualified for the event on 25th June, 2022 ...plenty of time to make a decision.

My own personal opinion is that other factors played a role in this debacle.

I just read in the newspaper (Volkskrant in The Netherlands) that the gouverner of Bali also made a request to ban the Isreal team. Really?

Very cleverly paraded the kids on tv all crying etc how it was their dream to play for their country

Don't forget the 2018 Asian games were only held in Indonesia because the original host, Vietnam, pulled out.

A lot of "office politics" or in this case "partai politik" behind this WK drama, right? Input for a new Indonesian tv-series, like the british "Yes. Minister"?

No, they are just being a bunch of _ _ _ _ _. I'll let you fill in the blanks.

The cat is out of the bag, now. Do not under estimate the power of grassroot id...s who have been brainwashed since there were kids in the religious boarding schools. As soon as this practice still exist there will not be significant change. A little background about these boarding schools, they are typical the children who fail to enter or to compete the favourable state (or to some extents privately funded) schools. That ended up in boarding schools mainly because they are not smart enough to compete. In the religious boarding schools, they do not mingle with other communities, religions, to embrace diversity away from reality and therefore could easily be brainwashed.

it is the same with co-habitation law, when it is was still under consideration a lot of people were saying Indonesia is moderate and rational. Boom approves unanimously.
These types of people could easily be motivated by hatreds. A small amount of pocket money and lunch will do. The political party will need support from the voters like this to maintain their existence.
