This situation is like a huge open goal for every politician, with the goalkeeper still stranded in the other half. Any politician thinking of running in next year's election that doesn't demand Israel to be banned from the tournament is quite frankly, politically speaking, an idiot.

And Anies, the king of SARA after what he did to Ahok, is absolutely certain to use it as a way to get back into the headlines, since most people have by now forgotten about him.

The only problem is that if every single politician says the same thing, then who can the crowds protest against, and threaten to kill or jail this time? It would be like Americans protesting on the streets about how great apple pie is and getting very angry about it.

There is nothing to gain of course, only to lose. And even before Egypt, Palestinians were the first to recognize Indonesia’s independence at the time. Besides loyalty that also makes you as presidential candidate in line with Bung Karno, the father of the nation, who strived for an independent Palestine nation.

All this is not new in fact; in 1958 Indonesia could qualify for the World Cup, but dropped out after refusing to play and compete with Israel in the same tournament. The resignation of the Indonesian National Team was due to Sukarno's direct orders, who reasoned that in competing with Israel, it would be recognizing the existence of the country.

Exactly what I said could happen days ago. Of course, par for the course the local experts and those with a horse in the race failed to see this until it hit them in the face. Even now, if Indonesia turns around and says hey, Israel is very welcomed here, the Israel team could protest that they feel threatened here. For good reason too with some of the nut case mass organization members. I do not see this ending well for Indonesia now no matter what they decide to do.

Certainly I hope for a good outcome, it's kinda sad that because of a few troublemakers something like this could happen.

I respectfully disagree. All sides will come to a compromise, and Indo will have gained some respect within the Islamic world and with those persons who consider themselves to be anti-colonial and/or working for social justice, etc.

You’re right.

Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Yahya Cholil Staquf or Gus Yahya questioned the motives of a group of people rejecting the presence of the Israeli National Team to compete in the U-20 World Cup in the country.

For Yahya it doesn't matter if the Israeli national team comes to Indonesia. He considered that the the Israeli National Team visiting Indonesia did not harm the position of Palestine.

It is somewhat understandable coming from a governor of Central Java who -while having done practically nothing for his province- will want to become the next president. But from Bali? That’s weird.

The silence from Anies is also striking. Is he still contemplating how to react, or will he keep reticent on this one? Prabowo is also inaudible.

And what about the new president of the PSSI (Indonesian Football League), Erick Thohir who is also the minister of state owned enterprises? If there is one person who should take a stand here, it’s him.
