Not sure where to post this, but decided on General Chat rather than Health and Medical.

So my father in law, Kasiman bin Kasiyan, passed away yesterday / earlier today (depending where you are), in Balikpapan. We do not know conclusively the cause of death: he was old and had been in poor health for several years - had survived multiple heart attacks since 2013. But my wife said that he had been having flu-like symptoms recently and I think it very likely that he will be yet another unreported Covid casualty for Indonesia. He was also suffering from dementia and no longer recognized even his closest family members. Over the ten years I knew him, I could see his gradual decline from a kind man who nevertheless was oriented to military discipline, and used to giving respect to superiors and commanding it from subordinates, to a frail old man telling stories to himself.

I feel sad for myself, my wife and his wife, children and grandchildren etc. but also relieved and happy that it worked out for my wife to be there when it happened. He was a good man, always kind and generous to people and to animals. He was an officer in the army and reportedly served in Sukarno's personal guard detail. He was a well respected man in his mosque and community. He will be missed. Feel free to post "berduka cita"s below if you wish.

Seems like you had some respect for the man. My condolences. It's true what you say about your wife being home at the right time. Not being able to go to her father's funeral would have been horrible. Too bad you can't be there with her, man. My condolences.
Keep the faith, man.

Very sorry for the loss in your family. Hopefully with his family so near at his death it was not covid related. Perhaps everyone should be tested so there are no other sadness added to his loss.

It's a good idea and I have been thinking along the same lines. My wife had covid-compatible symptoms last week and earlier today she said that her niece was having some symptoms as well. Fortunately my wife was fully vaccinated (Pfizer) before she traveled to Indonesia. But the rest of the family are unvaccinated, and of course neighbors and friends have been passing through and congregating outside the house through the night. More will be coming around this time to help with washing the body and prayers.

Unfortunately in Indonesia apparently, the Covid test is not free and the cost of testing many family members may be prohibitive. I really don't know what advice to give my wife at this point - I am concerned for her mother and the grandkids. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

My condolences to you and your family for your loss. 🙏

Re: Covid tests. It should be free at the local Puskesmas if you have symptoms.

I would think so especially if there has been a suspected death in the family.
.
May your father in law rest in peace P. Asam Manis

May his soul Rest In Peace, Pak Asam Manis

I lost about 4 friends since 2020.
Latest one was last week, he was still OK on Friday, he said he was in IGD but they were lack of oxygen tanks, then on Sunday night he was gone.
I am so paranoid, even though I had my 1st vaccine, I still do the swab test in clinic before travelling anywhere. I did it twice since the vaccine.
You can get own test kits for 50-60rb/set, or pay 80-150rb/test in clinic.

Thank you - my condolences for your friends too. It's been a tough 18 months for the world and far from over. We all just have to do the best we can. The people here who won;t get the vaccine when all they have to do is say "Yes, I want it" make me crazy.

Thank you Pak Asam.
Yes exactly, lots of people here ONLY say yes to vaccine after they lost a relative or a friend. smh!

I'm sorry to hear that, condolences to you and your family for your loss.

I can feel the pain if you see your loved ones go step-by-step because of dementia. My mother is on its final way because of dementia, she does not recognize anyone anymore nor can she speak, eat, walk. Its so sad and I whish you strenght in this sad time.

Condolences to you and family Pak Asam Manis.

Really sad period we are living in at the moment. In my street alone 2 people passed away due to Covid in the past 4 months.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss pak Asam Manis. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Indeed, we are living in difficult time; might happened to anybody around us, friends, our relatives and even our self. Last year my younger daughter (in US) and myself (was in Egypt) got it. Luckily we are asymptomatic and so far no known effect to us. Dont know on the long term.

My BIL and all his family (wife, 2 kids, maid) are currently in self isolation. No bed available and the effect are not severe to his wife and kids. My SIL living in small city of central Java is also still under treatment in local puskesmas. Seem her condition is getting better.

My Alumni WAG has less than 100 members - 11 of them (excluding family) admitted that they had been infected with Covid 19. Two plus another four family members are not survive. The numbers may still increase.

My condolences. May your father-in-law rest in peace.

I just found out 2 days ago that my boss is sick with COVID. I'm very worried about him. He is in good health but he is 68 years old, and he sounded very weak on the phone.

Thanks all for your condolences, they are greatly appreciated.

A bit of good news - my FIL was buried yesterday in the keburan kampong at the bottom of the hill, in spite of it being officially "full" and closed to new interments for years - and right next to his mother's grave too. My wife says "rejeki": apparently there was a small plot there that was never used, in the most remote part of the cemetery.

My condolences mate, I’m not at all religious but between you & me I have said the occasional silent prayer & I’m saying another now for you & your family
