US Presidential Election - What's your take?

Undo trade agreements - Undo or renegotiate, I certainly hope so. It was the traditionally blue rust belt states that gave Trump the victory. Jobs jobs jobs. Didn't anyone notice how quiet the unions were during the election cycle? Always a big factor in the Dems turnout but very quiet this year. Major cities in the rust belt continuing to decline with no turn around in sight. So again the blue collar/middle class knows they will have a heavier tax burden while so many are already living paycheck to paycheck with the awareness that their job could be the next to go.

Those jobs are never coming back. They left for China, and even now are leaving China for even cheaper places or are replaced by automation. Remember when fast food workers demanded a $15/hr wage, and the industry responded with touch screen self check outs? Low skill, labor intensive jobs are never coming back to the US, and even now semi-skilled jobs are being replaced by machines. Taxi drivers, truck drivers, pilots, pharmacists, warehouse workers, waiters, bank tellers, cashiers, secretary, office assistant etc are all going the way of the elevator attendant. Most probably within the decade.

They bought a comforting lie over the hard truth. So instead of free college education (gasp! socialism!), the went with an empty slogan. There, that is "telling as it is".

And as long as I am on the subject, a special thanks to all the intellectually superior posters here and throughout the states that gleefully loved to describe Trump supporters as idiots, stupid, rednecks, hillbilly's... did I cover it all? And of course Hillary's basket of deplorables. There was no better way to stimulate the Trump movement than to throw out such insults just because someone didn't agree with your line of thinking.

The "intellectually superior" were not wrong on the demographics of Trump supporters. Didn't he win the most among "no-college, white, male"? Also Trump received fewer votes than either Romney or McCain (1-2 million less), but Hillary received even less than Obama by about 7 million. So people were not inclined to choose either the stale sandwich or the shit sandwich. I guess they didn't realize that they will have to eat one or the other, so bon appétit!

All those intellectually inferior people had to live with 8 years of Obama. Surely you can live with 4 years of Trump.

How terrible it was to live under Obama. Unemployment down, gas prices the lowest in over a decade, stock market at record high, interest rates at record low, and income was finally rising. Once again, republicans managed to get the people to vote against their best interest. In other news, H.L. Mencken still correct.

Also: It is not so much that people voted for Trump, people didn't come out for Hillary.

Obviously people are of different opinions on the outcome of this or any other election. Questions: Where does everyone go from here? What is next for the country? Is it possible to bridge some of the gap? Or, is it even to soon for these questions?

Well, this is democracy, you gotta take the good with the bad. Obama and Clinton deserve every credit for their commitment for a good transition to Trump, which Trump himself is unwilling to do if the result is the other way around.

Liberals will just need to weather a conservative supreme court for the next three decades, and a full Republican gov't for at least the next two years. Who knows, conservatives might actually do better. Republicans have no excuses now that they're fully in power.

I think there's little chance to bridge the gap, one side simply needs to win and the other just deal with it. As long as there's no violence, life goes on.

Before anyone can try to bridge the gaps, one must first figure out where those gaps actually are.

Bring back the job like... open up a death mining site?

Have you seen the income tax cut Trump proposed? It will give more benefit to those who earned in the top rate tax bracket. For those, middle tax down will only save little bit.. not worth talking .. after all exemption and deduction usually it will leave them with very small tax liablity. And for this, american people throw out the chance of getting free college.

and this immigration issue that he brought up.. instead of punishing those employeer who employ illegal immigrants, instead he chased the "innocent illegal immigrants". They wont come to the united states if no one employ them!!

There no consideration at all that these "illegal immigrants" are trying to have a better life.. instead of kindness, they are being used by giving them low wage, bad treatment and now criminal label on their forehead.... i felt betrayed by american people..

Where are those slogan of politically correct and fighting for human rights?

I don't think you are a moron, and I thank you for continuing to engage. Let me be clear what I think is moronic: I have heard many Trump supporters, including close personal friends, support Trump because "he's not a politician". Here on this board, someone said they liked that he was shaking up the Republican Party.

Well, let's look at that lack of experience as a politician. On what planet does that qualify someone to be president? Do you think an inexperienced brain surgeon is a better choice than one who has spent years in school and then learning his/her trade with more experienced doctors? Do you want to work in a skyscraper built by an architect who has no training in structural integrity? Of course not. Then why the heck would anyone want a president who has zero knowledge of the political system?

People may think government is easy, but it's not. (If it were we'd have full employment, no deficit, etc. already.) Harvard actually teaches classes to incoming Congresscritters (or at least they used to - if it is no longer SOP, I'm sure something else has taken its place) to explain to them how the legislative process works, because in real life it is complicated. A president should already know that system inside out and be able to manipulate to it advantage. Could Trump even give a good precis of the sort those Congressional freshmen can after they complete their Harvard training? Does he even know really basic stuff like how riders work or when you can filibuster or how presidential vetoes get overridden? Maybe, but he showed no evidence of that and implied such skills and knowledge were of no value. And don't even get me started on his lack of knowledge of diplomacy or even the facts on the ground in the Middle East. He's the man who asked why we make nuclear weapons if we don't intend to use them.

Trump liked to say that in Hilary's 30 years she had done nothing (as if one junior senator could single-handledly implement any policy she wanted). Turning that around for a moment, Trump is 70 - and never ran for public office. What kind of terrifying hubris must he possess to think he has the right to start at the very top? If he cared about public policy, why didn't HE run for Senate a few years ago? As the junior senator from NY surely he would have done more than Hilary, eh?

Now, people may have answers to those challenges, but I have never once heard a word beyond the platitude, "he's for change! he'll drain the swamp!" Such blathering is on the face of it illogical - if someone can't do better than that to describe their support for Trump, than yes - they ARE morons. I am not including people who can actually discuss policy issues, but I have to say, I did not see that happening in a variety of cases.

One of our own posters said, "I do like the fact that Trump destroyed the "Good Old Boy" Republican party establishment and they hate him for it." He hasn't been back since making that comment, so may very well have a cogent defense of that attitude. However, it sure seems to defy logic on its face. Exactly which part of the party establishment's platform is Trump bringing down? Trump is showing every sign that he will put Republican establishment people like Gingrich into positions of power in his administration. He'll be working hand-in-hand with a Republican House and Senate to pass elements of the Republican platform. (Which is fine, BTW - that's how our country works.)

Anyway, the "morons" are the people who vote with no more clarity on their own politics than "ooh, he's inexperienced - that'll teach those Washington insiders!" Obama must have gotten some of their votes, too. Maybe those people are wonderful in other ways, but in terms of having a moral compass or a well-thought-out value system for how they'd like to see our political system operate, they are, well...moronic.

Excellent rebuttal, same thoughts but couldn't have put it in writing.

Drain the swamp? I can't seem to find where that actually happened. Because it didn't really happen, you can probably throw that change stuff out the window. The Good O Boy Republican party is still quite effective looking at the Senate and Congress. The Old Guard are being brought back in so I can't seem to find where the party is in any way not stronger. I see this as not a benefit for Trump. The old guard is around him advising but the GOP in the other houses are not part of the old guard, they are what the GOP really is and most just don't care for Trump stepping all over their toes to get to the WH. Many of them came on board with him because he was the parties nominee, nothing more. At this time based on past rhetoric from Trump, I don't see a lot of cooperation. If he has humbled, there could be a much better relationship.

.
About that foreign production; the reality might be a bit different than perceived.

Of course the electronic components etc. are Taiwan, China, South Korea, and so on. But that has been for decades, even manufacturers as Philips left their home countries.

But for car manufacturers for instance, who employ approx. half of the workforce, the production takes place in the United States anyway! The amount of US produced vs US sold in the domestic market, is for the major brands between 65 and 95%! The highest numbers (obviously) apply to the American brands (GM, Ford, Jeep) but even the Japanese manufacturers have the majority of their production and/or assembly in the USA. Toyota has as many factories as Ford. The Germans mainly invested in the southern states.

Now don't forget that other markets are very protectionistic too, even RI. And there is no way you can sell cars in China without local production and a local partner. Besides the European car manufactureres, also Ford and GM (Buick) are trying to get a major foothold over there. So the well being of the Chinese economy, still with the highest growth potential, is important for US companies as well of course.

So as said, in fact it is no major issue. But esp. after the "let's do more ourselves" rhetoric, many people seem to think the US car production is in Mexico or Brazil.

One of the major exports of the US is Boeing commercial aircraft...yet most components are sourced globally and only put together in the USA. If those imported parts are subject to the tariffs Trump suggests....I would expect that Airbus Industry would make a killing by selling their aircraft cheaper.

No offence intended towards anyone but watching the news this AM, I saw Donald Trump in the Whitehouse and it seemed odd. It seems more like he should be on Celebrity Apprentice. It almost seemed surreal, hopefully he surrounds himself with good people and does well for the American people.

Yes I think Trump has to be very careful, I recall opening a Flap indicator, it said Made in the USA on the dial, inside said made in Mexico, the daftest thing I've ever seen is a present a mate gave me, it was the crappiest bow and Arrow you have ever seen, it said made in S Korea and assembled by some India tribe, I cannot remember the name of the tribe I expect they are extinct now, so many parts made in different parts of the world and then all assemble in another country which takes credit for it

About Boeing the airframe, wings, and most tails are made in america . This is the most inportant parts of the plane and the most time comsuming I belive. All the rest ie engines are up to the company buying them and can come from serval differant locations.

Oh rember this , Trump lost the popular vote . He won the elector collage vote. America was going to get a raw deal no matter who won. Thank god i live here.

For example here is a list of where the B787 Dreamliner is made....http://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-787-dreamliner-structure-suppliers-2013-10?IR=T&r=US&IR=T

It says most parts are made out of the USA and if Trump imposes an import tax...just imagine the cost and the possible job losses of the assemblers in USA as airlines buy cheaper competitor aircraft.

The theory of course, is that the companies will be forced to source parts inhouse, or create those themselves, or negotiate lower rates.... if they wish to stay competitive.

Of course cost cutting can also be achieved by moving everything to low cost countries. (Some Financial Controller and Tax department will be asked to look at that scenario.) This might also lead to monopolies/oligopolies, if supply companies are mainly to be selected on location. And what about quality?

Exactly.....and will provide more division in USA perhaps leading to turmoil.
Boeing already moved it's headquarters from WA to Chicago and some assembly from Everett to Charleston due to machinist's strikes. Trump overwhelmed in SC and lost in WA.

Well all done now, and this were the story really starts, but as an outside I'm sure the two main parties will be a bit more careful on who they select as prospective presidential candidate, just a quick question though, why do all the losers want to go to Canada, why not Mexico, the drugs would be cheaper

They
think Canada is the same as the US and they could easily go back into the US whenever they wanted to. So many threaten but those that actually do are few and far between. Mostly talk.
