Michael vs Michael. 🎯 What a great game.

WHAT A GAME !!!!

So both Germany and The Netherlands are out of the tournament after losing on penalties.

Both coaches got a lot of criticism for their choices. People felt that Nagelsmann's system was too rigid and that he never made Germany a real team. Netherlands’ Koeman got scrutinized because of his choice for a 5 player defense. Very ‘unDutch’ and cowardly, it also made no sense after the last game.

Both England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Belgium 🇧🇪 were almost kicked out.

The game between the USA 🇺🇸 and Bosnia H 🇧🇦 will start in 20 minutes. In Indonesia you can watch it live on TVRI (free digital via antenna).

The ending of Belgium 🇧🇪 against Senegal 🇸🇳 was kind of absurd.

But the game which just ended between Portugal 🇵🇹 and Croatia 🇭🇷 also raises some eyebrows.

In the final moment of the extended time Croatia made the 2-2 equalizer. But it was canceled because of offside.

Now if you see the position of the Croatian player, that looks very obvious since he has only one player (the keeper) in front of him.

But but but; it depends on how he got the ball. Was it an accidental deflection or a deliberate play? The referee and VAR decided for the former.

So Portugal wins and continues, Croatia is out.

  • Accidental Deflection: If your teammate passes the ball to you and it accidentally ricochets off an opponent who had no time to react, you are offside.
  • Deliberate Play: If a defending player intentionally attempts to control, pass, or clear the ball and it goes to you, you are not offside, even if you were standing in an offside position. The defender is considered to have intentionally reset the play.

Ref says ET 10mins
Goal scored 90+13
How. Why.
Then play continues for 4 more mins.

So why now does 10 become 17. No subs made. 30 seconds for the PO goal celeb. No injuries.

I do wish the title for this thread could be changed. "

to "

Michael vs Michael. 🎯 What a great game to some people but boring as all get go to others."

Unfortunately this is the only place on the interwebby to get the results. Or some of them

Jetstar, I suspect that poking fun at someone's favourite sport is about as dangerous as mocking someone's religion. No offence really intended even though it might risk being stoned to death in some countries. So, y'all, enjoy your great game.

It’s not necessarily my favorite sport, but it is without a doubt the most popular and well known sport in the world.

And for many expats it’s besides the family & friends back home a bit of a last connection with their home country. Personally I don’t follow the politics there anymore and feel like I’m European citizen but in sports it’s a different matter.

Anyway, Argentina 🇦🇷 just barely beat Cape Verde 🇨🇻 in extended time. That underdog did amazingly well and never gave up. And the current world champion will probably play the finals but imho -unlike a France- they don’t deserve it and their (easy) playing schedule seems a bit of a FIFA scheme.

The Australians 🇦🇺 must have a bit of of bad taste in their mouth after they lost from Egypt 🇪🇬 with penalties. The first time that country got so far in the championship btw.

Doesn't this refer to darts, rather than football?

On Monday night (Tuesday morning for us) the United States football team can make history.

For the first time in their existence, they can qualify for the quarterfinals of a World Cup. Then they have to beat the Red Devils, the Belgian national team. For the Belgians, it would be the fourth quarterfinal in their World Cup history. For the US it would be a first..

Those who still want to be there pay unprecedented prices. While tickets were initially available for 800 euro, the price of the cheapest ticket is now 2,200 euro. The prices of the best seats go up to a staggering 9,300 euro.

And it can be even more expensive. For the 1/8 final between Mexico and England in the mythical Aztec stadium in Mexico City, you pay at least 3,148 euro. Canada-Morocco, on the other hand, is the 'cheapest' game of the 1/8th finals. For 618 euro you can attend in Texas.

Paraguay 🇵🇾 confirmed its image as the Getafe* of teams in this World Cup tournament. In the first half, the French did not manage to shoot on goal even once. The South Americans built a wall, only defended and did not shy away from the physical duels. In the end France 🇫🇷 got a penalty and Mbappé -who else- scored.

* Getafe Club de Fútbol is a Spanish football club based in the Community of Madrid, competing in La Liga. They are not known for their talents but for their extreme defensive style.

Being bi national Belgian/French I'll try to watch that one.
And don't ask me for which side I stand....

And then I'll switch back to being French..🤣🤣🤣

I think supporting for France is a rather safe bet on this moment. But you never know.

seems a bit of a FIFA scheme.

FIFA canceled the suspension of Folarin Balogun, allowing the American striker to play against the Belgian team. A few days before that decision, US President Donald Trump called FIFA Chairman Gianni Infantino. According to several sources, including The New York Times, he urged a review of the suspension.

That a red card being deleted is very unusual and never happens.

For a similar situation, we already have to go back to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1962. Then Chile and Brazil were facing each other and both a Chilean and a Brazilian were given red. The strange thing about that situation? Garrincha's red card was forgiven, while the Chilean's remained.

It was only from 1970 that there was a rule that a red card automatically meant a suspension for the next match, as should also be the case for Balogun. Since the introduction of the suspension system with cards, a suspension has never been reversed.

You won't be surprised that American national coach Mauricio Pochettino loudly cheered for the non-suspension of Folarin Balogun. He did that in a press conference with some hallucinating arguments.

“KBVB investigates all possible options”: is the Belgian football association’s reaction which states to be “flabbergasted” by the cancellation of the red card from Folarin Balogun, for which Donald Trump even thanks FIFA. The trainer and goal keeper mentioned April’s fools day.

“I tried. Now it's over.” After the elimination against Norway 🇳🇴 at the World Cup, Neymar (34) of Brazil 🇧🇷 says goodbye to international football.

With the most expensive World Cup tears ever. In 2017 Neymar Junior moved from Barcelona to the megalomaniac dreaming PSG. The then 25-year-old Brazilian was brought in to win the Champions League. And that costed the Parisians something at that time: 222 million euro. A record.

He was injured 585 days between 2022 and 2025; hamstring, ligaments etc. After he moved from PSG to Al-Hilal in 2023 - for 90 million euro - it was actually over for Neymar.
