Omicron

I think they caught this so early that we just don't know yet. When the UK variant was noticed it was already widespread in the UK - I think they caught this one earlier (or SA caught it in a region of very poor surveillance so we just don't know anything...esp since the age demographics of many southern African countries skew v young - even in south africa I think only about 6% of the population is 65+)...I don't think we can make any judgements till it starts spreading somewhere in the west.

Cheers. I have seen reports it is in the US(16 states so far, UK, HK, and a few other places(mainly on Yahoo's main page), but It has felt strange as nothing else has really been said.

When they stop making propaganda and fearmongering instead of news.

American has decent news sources. Reuters, NPR, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, to name a few. Just avoid the opinion and OpEd pages if you don't like the "slant." (WSJ opinion pieces make me bristle, but their news pages are respectable.)

No media source is perfect, and if all you want to do is criticize you can find instances where mistakes, sometimes significant ones, were made by one or more of the sources I listed. But on the whole they tend to be beacons of rationality.

Of course, if you lazily assume that US media consists only of the New York Post, CNN, Fox News, Breitbart, One America News and so forth, then I would respectfully suggest that your prejudices are informing your choice of exemplars, rather than the other way 'round.

CNN, Fox News, Breitbart, One America News and so forth,
The REAL AMELIKA !

No, more seriously I just managed to get a very cheap promotional 1y suscription to N.Y.T. and they are pretty good.
Opinion pieces are what they say they are "opinions", and all opinions should be able to express themselves in a democracy.

CNN, MSNBC, and Fox are the most influential propaganda outlets forming public opinion. Among them, the ones that lie less, have more audience. Breitbart almost does not exist-not worth mentioning, NYP is a tabloid, and Reuters is British. WSJ is readable, NYT is a shadow of a former past, WaPo simply in Bezos's hands.

There are media sources that are trying to be credible, but not among the above, influential ones.

Are you in the 7% or the 29%?
"Only 7 percent of all Americans say they have "a great deal" of trust in reports appearing in newspapers, on television or in other media outlets, and 29 percent said they have "a fair amount" of trust in the media, the Gallup poll published on Thursday found."

I don't really much care who the media outlet is except for the far right ones which I refuse to access. I lean more on particular interviews and substance presented. My television viewing is limited and limited in Indonesia.i do watch some CNN because there are a few that are not afraid to ask hard questiins of those they interview. I think overall their international feed is better than the strickly US one. I watch a little FOX but I have to limit that to their News people and never their opinion people. I have no problem with switching over to a French, German, Australian, Japanese, or even Al Jereeza to get some confirmation or different views in things. As for networks, I need to access them on line as I do other media such as writen.

Sure, some at CNN definately lean towards an agenda that yells progressive far left and I try to avoid them. I like the fact that CNN is willing to spend the money and put reporters around the world to give viewers first hand looks and early breaking news. Most times though, one hour and after that it is rehash. As far as Cuomo, I think I have seennsnippits of maybe 2 ir 3 of his shows. Never impressed and he had an agenda to suit himself. I they gave his time slot to someone like Briana Keiler, I would probably tune in sin e she is a no nonsense interviewer and reporter. She does side with military personnel being that she is a military family but she doesn't give military brass a pass.

I seen WaPo has put out an AI done list of media who have been possitive or negative in the past years. Evidently full of Excel like spread sheets for those so inclined to go through those things.

As for the NY Times not being what they once were, you could say the same for most print media. Fist came television and the likes of Walter Cronkite, the most trusted man in America and then along comes the internet. People were no longer getting their news feom print and fell into the sound bite craze pit. People for the most part no longer wanted to read the entire story when they got all they wanted to hear in a fe seconds of broadcasting. Unfortunate but is is the way of print media. Many of the TV type media now have incorporated articles and full reporting on their web sites. Instead of getting a shortened video to fit with programming, ine can actually read a full transcript of what is being reported on. Add information many times.

News media is a conduet between an event and the masses. That is all. That is all they should be. So called news personalities should be eliminated and news should just report in whole what the masses do not experience personally. If anyone is to form an opinion, it should be the masses who receive the raw information. No one telling them what they should think and no one spinning reports to point the viewers in a particular heading. Will we ever get that, no way. Never. So, it is up to the masses to use their brains to weed through what is being presented. Unfortunantly, so many are today formatted to only take in what they have been fed to believe and not worry about facts that tell them they are wrong no matter where those viewers may lay. I like to think that for the most part, I can still firmulate a decision in things with weighing the pros and cons. My brain may be old but still usable. If I form an opinion and simeone disagrees, change my mind but they have to do it with presenting reliable facts and saying this news service or that reported it just won't fly.

Depends on what day you ask and what media source you're asking about.

I'd like to think that I'm a discerning enough reader to separate out the reality from the slant. I have a pretty high level of trust in the facts reported by CNN, but I can identify a lot of leftie "spin" added. Don't get me wrong - chances are, I agree with whatever spin they're adding. I just wish they'd leave it out and let the facts speak for themselves.

Of course, I'm sure I'm not alone in believing I can see through the bias. No doubt everyone believes that of themselves. The extent to which our beliefs are justified is another matter.

Not good news for the vaccinated. Let's hope the cases stay mild.

Well, at least now people will realise that the vacine does not protect you from getting infected, but only protects you from getting very sick.
Than again we would need more information on the "profile" of these cases.
Anyway at the moment there is not enough data to make conclusions.

A preliminary ex-vivo study, not yet peer-reviewed. Omicron multiplies 70x faster in the bronchus, but 10x slower in the lungs when compared to Delta.

The researchers found that Omicron SARS-CoV-2 infects and multiplies 70 times faster than the Delta variant and original SARS-CoV-2 in human bronchus, which may explain why Omicron may transmit faster between humans than previous variants. Their study also showed that the Omicron infection in the lung is significantly lower than the original SARS-CoV-2, which may be an indicator of lower disease severity.

They say first case found. Can't be first since they had to get it from someone. I think that Indonesia actuall looked, did proper testing, and reported truthfully one would find there are many more cases of Covid Omicron floating around.

The positive are cleaning workers at the quarantine Wisma Atlet facility, so it is not yet confirmed as community spread. However, if they were traveling home each day after work, it is likely already loose in the community.

It is EVERYWHERE now already.

We better get used to live with it. Still plenty letters available in the Greek alphabet !

Oh I know. I am just glad we are not getting the nothing to see here, move along, everything is just fine response like we did before.

I am more worried about Omicron's cousin, Unicron.

"Real Madrid have announced that there are five new positive Covid-19 cases among their squad and staff, including Gareth Bale and manager Carlo Ancelotti's son, Davide."

But no problem, as long they have their vaccine card or healthpass they an enter anywhere.....

If there is any proof needed of the uselessness of this QR shit, there you have (again) one.

Check out this list.

The thing is, it isn't the first case here since they had to get it from someone here since it is highly unlikely they themselves were traveling. Be it from their community or workplace, someone passed it on to them.
