Music

But we shouldn't underestimate the Dutch. (I know, most only know Golden Earring with Radar Love, a great song btw.)

Where am I to go now that I've gone to far... Always loved that lyric!

I'm interested to know what the music scene is like in Indonesia? Is there live music going on? Rock? Jazz? I'm living in the land of over produced booty music.

There is a huge amount of live performances. Even in (bar-)restaurants and the shopping malls. But the quality is not always that high; very often they get stuck in covering the same songs over and over. (You hear Adele and The Beatles all the time.)

There are local music styles also, very often they are a bit pop/soul. It always reminds me a bit of the music you used to hear in the EuroVision Song Contests with a high Mariah Carey content (So not that special, a bit torch song or local chanson or even schlager.) There is also a music style which is more or less 'music of the people', it is called Dangdut. Very often with ultra sexy performances. There are even Dangdut channels on TV (with karaoke.) But it is looked down on by middle and upper class.

Rock is also popular, and performances are very easy to find but also there it is mostly covering (AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Stones, ..). Not that bad if you're sitting on a terrace with a drink I guess. (Where I live there is live music outside of the mall every single day of the week.)

International stars do perform here as well. (If they don't get boycotted as Lady Gaga.) The fan base and local market is huge of course. The summer music festivals as you see in Europe and the US are very rare. The concept with camping etc. you don't really see here.

Java has a (rather famous) multi day jazz festival.

Bandung is well known for its music. There is a healthy and active live music scene.
You can find anything from jazz to death metal. It is knowing where to look.
When I get time I will motivate myself to try and make a list of some of the bars/ cafes where there is a regular live thing going on.
A project I will enjoy very much. Maybe someone would like to volunteer to accompany me on it?

Nice, always interesting to see the music scene around the world, even my own country I can get surprised, found a little crappy dive bar in downtown Denver with an awesome Jazz band, good mixed aged crowd in there too.

BA your husband plays bass? Very cool, I still have 3 of the 4 basses I've ever owned in my life, a 76' Gibson Thunderbird, 6 string Curbow, and a plywood Chinese double bass with an electric pick-up, have an old late 70's Ampeg(before they sold out to Crate) SVT with 8x10 cabinet that will rattle the beer bottles off the table when it's turned up. I put them down about 8 years ago when I got sick of being a starving musician to concentrate on a business, starting to get them out and dust them off again.

Interesting story :) I just told my husband what you said & showed him your picture.
He said "waaaaw!" & "he must play again, is good." (We assumed you are male)

 yep American "Dude."

Got a bit jaded with the music scene, time practicing 4 nights a week, it's an endless money pit out your wallet(when your broke that is), drama queen musicians(agh the worst:wacko::wacko:, I try to stick to 3 piece bands), the current and last place I've lived has/still has a total shit live music scene.

That being said I still miss it, I've always wanted to do an old school surf band and play covers of Ventures and Dick Dale.

The Thunderbird is one solid piece of mahogany, neck through body, it's the bass I learned on, it's a bitch to play I've been told, it's so top heavy when you let go of the neck it goes strait to the floor.

I have to say that I haven't come across many (any?) drama queens on the circuit we hang out in- Stoners - rockers.
They like their booze and a good laugh but are a pretty close community and are mainly a great bunch.
If anyone of them gets sick they are swamped with visits and charity gigs to try and raise cash for medical bills and such. I do like that about them- very supportive of each other.

Rolling Stone Magazine Indonesia published an all time 'best of' list of 150 Indonesian songs. And the results are somewhat disappointing. If you look at number 3. for instance, it was from a movie sound-track. The number 2. is very nationalistic (some would call it patriotic). I am rather happy with the first place though; a real original with social critique lyrics.

The song with most international potential is probably this:

The band Noah is a reincarnation of PeterPan. The band with singer Ariel. He is the brownie (i.e. b(e)rondong manis; popcorn but also pretty boy in Indonesian slang & abbrev.) which we already discussed in the free porn thread. The one with the spicy home videos.

A favorite of my wife. And it shows Ahmad Dhani probably should have kept on making music instead of all these other activities. (It went downhill fast after his jury appearance on X-Factor Indonesia.)

And now for a different genre - I was listening to Hawaiian music yesterday and realized just how much I like this (the song is "Olinda Road" by the group Hapa):

Hey, how do I embed a youtube video? You'd think I would know, but I don't. I'm sure El_G has posted instructions; I'll have to go find them.

Luckily it's not Elvis....

Take the icon right on the insert picture and paste the link...

It took me a minute to figure that out ... let's see if it works ...

Freddie King, now we're talking, my 2 fav albums of his are 1934 - 1976 featuring E.C. & Texas Cannonball with Leon Russell which has Big Legged Woman on it.

I had a Bluesy day on Friday with a whole heap of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Big Mama Thornton, Little Walter,, Bo Diddley and that bunch of renegades entertaining me for hours.

Sublime- enjoy.

Big Mama Thornton- interesting back story with her.
A lesbian who didn't hide her sexuality- considering the times - I'd say she was a ballsy lady.
