Music

Scoot, I took a listen to your Suggestions and was wondering. Does all the British Reggae have an easy listening style like I heard? I like the music but find if for my taste to all sound somewhat the same between artist. Maybe I just selected the wrong examples on YouTube. not sure or the rocker in me just doesn't hear the differences.

I understand that these artist did the romantic stuff I guess but how did the British Reggae compare to the Jamaican Reggae in style and beat?

Lovers rock is typically a slower beat with more emphasis on the lovey dovey type lyrics. The artists are all UK born 2nd generation Jamaican as are the majority of the production teams and the record companies that distribute the vinyl. Up until the advent of lovers rock a lot of British artists felt they had to exaggerate a Jamaican accent to be classed as "real reggae"

As for the sounding all the same comment, yeah I get it as that's how I feel listening to rock and heavy metal music. Guns and Roses, Metallica, Iron maiden, Motorhead, If you like that sort of thing, great, if not it all sounds the same. I also think that with music comes association, I grew up in an area with a high population of blacks so have always been exposed to Reggae my whole life and cant really relate to say ............................. country and western music.

However that said, I am sure there are many rednecks living in Bumfuck Tennessee who also "don't get it" if they were played reggae music or another genre of music they cant associate with.

I grew up in the 60s so early rock was the mainstay and yes, what I associated with like you said. Joining the military in the late 60s was a head turner because I was then introduced to what i still consider the real Soul music. Still love that but squirm a bit every time I hear someone associate later music with the name Soul. To me, it is far from what the classic Soul is.

Country music? Once it lost the twang it seemed listenable to me. Before that I wouldn't. As the years went by I did acquire a taste for Guthrie, Cash, and a couple of the older ones that did seem to influence a lot of early rockers.

I think for the most part, Country music died with all the crossover performers. While till a few that would represent the older styles and sounds, it seems the majority and the record sellers are the new pop artist that call themselves country.

I showed my almost 6 year old daughter some clips a while ago and now she dances around the house singing She's a Rainbow. She still asks me to sing her favourite lullaby at bed time - the chorus from Within You Without You.

If you like them, you will also appreciate dEUS. From the same city (The CITY) and good friends. Very very difficult to choose one song; you would need to listen to 5 or so on Youtube to get a better idea. This is somewhat softer, they also have some more uptempo (e.g. The Architect or Suds & Soda).

Another rather popular (alternative) artist in Belgium is Ozark Henry.

You probably heard the hit 'Alors on dance' by the Brussels artist Stromae before. He has been a huge success in parts of Europe and even Africa. I personally like this a bit better:

Great lyrics, especially:
"Tout le monde sait comment on fait les bébés
Mais personne sait comment on fait des papas"

A little something for BA - by way of an apology for suggesting she may have been a bit wilder than she really was on another thread. Hope these will raise a smile and get those hips shaking.

I'm all over the grid when it comes to music:rockon:

I grew up in the 70's listening to the classic rock of the time, old mo-town, disco, Beatles, the early 80's brought in a lot of the brit-pop like The Police, by time I was in high school towards the late 80's I rebelled and got into Metal - Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera. I hated that hair metal crap, started playing bass and being one of the only bass player in the 80's I found myself in a band playing bars by time I was 17.

Then the grunge explosion took hold in the 90's - Alice and Chains, Soundgarden, Rollins Band, Faith No More, Primus, Tool, was even listening to some of the gangster rap like Getto Boys. Also have always loved surf rock and played/sang in a metal-surf hybrid band.

Mid 90's I bought a double bass and started exploring different music all together and that goes to now, love Latin Jazz like Tito Puente. Buena Vista Social Club, Selina Cruz, this lead to trying to seek out traditional ethic music starting when I watched a Kurosawa movie called Kagemusha that had a Noh scene, old Indian movie music especially from the 60's, Chinese. I've never been into country but got into a rockabilly band and started getting into the music I was playing like Johnny Horton, Ronnie Hawkins, Wayne Hancock.

Now I listen to all of the above, lately I been going back to my rock roots finding some newer bands I like, can't stand this over-produced popular music today. Since this is an Indonesian forum I'll leave with this:smile: The Tielman Brothers -

Well, Indonesian...

There was quite a popular indorock scene from Holland at the end of the fifties and the early sixties. Other bands were even more popular than the Tielman Brothers, as the Crazy Rockers and the Blue Diamonds.....

......"Ramona...":lalala:

Nice post though; quite a big gap between Henry Rollins and the Buena Vista Social Club.

I've heard the Tielman Brothers came out as that music was giving way to 60's music style and never took off, at least in the US.

Yeah all over the place:dance:

jstar, thanks for bringing those groups to my attention. I think I'm going to create a "Belgian alternative playlist" for my iPod.

Ah, that's good. After the Belgian Wave in the eighties, it seems they are back on track again with many new and rather innovative bands.

This is currently one of the most popular live acts btw.: Oscar and The Wolf. They also get quite some airplay abroad now. I think it has a lot to do with a charismatic and pretty frontman as well. It is somewhat more melancholic and rather dark music.

This is their performance at the Ancienne Belgique, one of the oldest and most famous concert halls in the capital:

If it's too long or boring to watch that concert, you can get a flavor by looking at their current hit which is called The Game. (I linked the title to the clip on YouTube.)

But we shouldn't underestimate the Dutch. (I know, most only know Golden Earring with Radar Love, a great song btw.)

You got to love someone who has this in his (auto)biography: "Dotan was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Amsterdam. After moving to Amsterdam the Wailing Wall was too far away and Dotan started whining and complaining into a microphone. His musical career was born."

So Dotan recently had a big hit in the BENELUX and Germany:
