Mobil Rakyat...new cars

Already in place. I see the Mustang and BMW i8 here both very often. And yes, they make quite some noise...inside that is.

But even outside you can hear them quite well.

I guess the neighbor doesn't use the new Mustang's 'Quiet Mode' feature. (That's not a joke, it does exist.)

The new Jimny looks a bit Hummer-like even though the Hummer is defunct now. So its sad they went that way but maybe there isn't any other design way to go.

Maybe there is an old SJ lurking somewhere for me to consider?

You can still find SJ410s around, but why would you want them? They're still at least 40-50 million plus in good condition (is there such a thing?), uncomfortable as heck and way under powered. The SJ413 is the least I'd consider. Except for the looks, I'd consider the 4x4 Sidekicks instead of the 4x4 SJ413 Samurais. The 1.6 (16 valve) is preferred to the 1.3 liter engines (8 valve) and the 1.8 (16 valve) are much better engines (in the Sidekick sport). Wait... In Indonesia I think these are called Vitara? With Escudo being the 2 wheel drive? And only the 1.6L available I think.

I'd actually like to get one of the later years of the Vitara. There were one or two years where they had the fuel injection engines... <sigh> only if I could get my Jeep Cherokee back with its 4.0L inline 6

Yes, I think there are not many cars who have/had as many different names worldwide as the Suzuki Vitara.

It exists since 2013 and got a facelift end of last year so probably the announcement of a new model end of 2019.

I wonder if Indonesia will get the new Suzuki Jimny?

It seems they will show it in the August car expo in BSD.

Expected prices 150 and 300 million IDR, the latter is the 4X4. I remember the outgoing model was something like 240 juta, so that's quite an increase.

Wow, double the price for 4x4? I'd be mildly interested if they also made a Long version like the old ones.

A bastard baby of the LaRo Defender and Mercedes G-class. It's a good thing some brands don't give in to the 13 in a dozen crossover SUV's with all their bling bling and smooth lines. (Chrome and overstyling.)

Just a quickie. Will I need a International Driving Permit for an Asean (Thai) license?

The problem is that every ASEAN country still has their own rules. So a visitor can drive around. But the moment you stay more than 30 or 90 or xx days in the other country, you have to convert to a local license. (The same in the EU btw.)

Officially you need to report your foreign ASEAN license to Satuan Penyelenggara Administrasi (Satpas) at Daan Mogot.

90 days is normal if taking up residency or temporary residency. I do not believe Bahasa Indonesia is one of the languages in an IDP.

Only if you really really like the design and/or have too much money, you should consider this one....

If you're somewhat nationalistic and want to drive French, the sibling of the Nissan X-Trail is (surprisingly) not that expensive. It's approx. 10-20 juta more than the Japanese. Before it was a rebatched Samsung but that has changed...

I had a look at the interior of the revamped Datsun Go (+) and the new Cross.

It looks much more refined, better materials are used, the seats are no more hard planks with fabric, the dashboard is more advanced, there are two airbags now, etc. But still no middle armrest and no dual blower for the rear passengers.

What turned me off somewhat, are the headrests which are still fixed. That is the first thing I do when I get into (the back of) a car; move the headrest up. If you're between 160 and 170 cm you probably don't need that, if you're taller it's annoying.

What struck me also, is that the onboard radio system has Bluetooth but no GPS. You would think they -as many other car manufacturers- use Apple's or Google's solutions for that, but instead they chose for Sygic, a supplier of navigational systems (à la Garmin or TomTom). Other brands support this brand as well, but from the Asian car manufacturers only Honda does. The system interfaces with an App (that you need to download once) on your smartphone and then you have a GPS on the screen. Nothing wrong with that and Sygic has a good name (no real presence in Asia!) but you don't really have a choice to go with Google Maps or so unless you replace the whole unit. And its size did not really seem DIN standardized.

Many cars have no on-board GPS like some Audis.. The electronics in the dash of a car get "old" long before the mechanicals of the car do so it makes sense to use a separate updateable device via Bluetooth for anything that will "age"

Yes, maps get obsolete very fast. And buying and changing DVD's sucks.

But it is weird they only chose (as first car manufacturer for cars in the Asian markets!) to interface to Sygic. (Which in itself is not a bad system.)

Many car manufacturers leave out the GPS now but provide standardized interfaces to the smart phones and GPS systems of the two main players in the market: Google and Apple.

It is a kind of simulation; you get a (limited) version of your smartphone options on the car screen. So you can even use YouTube or messaging apps.

In Datsun's case, you will just get the Sygic GPS. So the navigation is projecting directly from the cellphone app onto the car's infotainment screen. Normally you should be able to use it without the phone since it is a touch screen. They have three map suppliers: NavTech, TeleAtlas and OpenStreetMap. I don't know which one they would use in Indonesia.

Google provides Android Auto....

Well, Suzuki will have two variants of the new Jimny: the 'Mini Car' and the 'Compact Car', but I think the first one will be reserved for the Japanese market. That version of the Jimny, is in fact a kei car. It is 3.3 meters long, only 1.48 meters wide and 1.72 meters high. The engine is a 0.6 liter three-cylinder which delivers 64 hp. With these specifications, that mini-Jimny complies with the specific Japanese kei legislation, which dictates a certain size. (Maximum width is 148 cm.) Cars that fall into such a category are cheaper to insure and the owners benefit from tax advantages.

This kei-Jimny will most probably not come to other countries as Indonesia, but we do get the somewhat more butch Jimny 'Compact Car', a car that will be marketed in Japan as the Jimny Sierra. And that's the real off-roader with Suzuki's improved AllGrip system and it is 165 cm wide. Not completely sure about the engine but probably a 1.5 liter. If there is an automatic (in Indonesia the chances are it will come later and be much more expensive), it will only have 4 gears.

Ho Hum, another in a long line of uninspiring, unoriginal Jeep knockoffs.
