DON'T PANIC.... well, maybe a little bit.

don't get me wrong, I'm not anti vax, just the "forced" part I take issue.
As a kid I had to get a variety. Back then there were no vaccines for measles, mumps or rubella (German measles as it was known then) and survived them all
I guess we'll all do whats required

My dad told me the other day that he "wouldn't want to be one of the first people to take" the new vaccine when it comes. I was a little bit surprised, what with him being a 71 year old currently living in the same house with teenagers (two of whom are employed in the service industry). I'd think he'd be more worried about the very real chance of dying from the virus than he is about the (presumably much smaller) chance of dying from the vaccine.

I really don't get it. If you wait for herd immunity, I think that kicks in at around 60%. So, that means all things being equal, you got that 60% chance of getting the disease. For the vaccine to be more dangerous (because of too much live virus), you'd need the vaccine to result in a 61% infection rate. That would be an amazingly bad vaccine. Seems unlikely.

Am I missing something about how vaccines can be dangerous?

There is an irrational mystique in the USA surrounding vaccinations, essentially all vaccinations. My explanation: built into all free societies is the tolerance of a lunatic fringe that ebbs and flows in direct proportion to ignorance, sloth and complacency.

Maybe people have some baseless fears that the Indonesian/Chinese vaccine could have some side effects.

I am not anti vaccin, I simply dont take any. Others do what they want.
Only vaccins I had in my life were the mandatary ones as a child, a few ones in the Navy, and 2 or 3 in the days some countries imposed them for a WP/ Visa.
Last one I cant even remember, but sure more than 30 years ago.
Meanwhile I have lived in nearly all SEA countries, and at 67 I am still alive.
And no plan to ever go for the C19 vaccin, dont care if it's Chinese or American.
And I don't even stress or worry .....

I just got vaccinated against pneumonia.(13) next year again (23). It is usually pneumonia that gets most people in the end but then again i suppose we have to died of something. But it comes recommended so seemed like a sensible precaution. In Thailand 1.3m Rupiah

As a child my mother took me for any vaccination going so I've probably had them all. Plus yellow fever, Japanese Encephalitis? and Cholera? as a requirement for work.

Malaysia has detected a mutation of the Sars-CoV-2 — the virus causing the Covid-19 pandemic — that is 10 times more infectious than the original Wuhan strain.

Called D614G, this mutation was detected in samples taken from three cases linked to the Sivagangga cluster, and one from the Ulu Tiram Cluster.

Compared to other strains, D614G produces more viral copies in the respiratory tract and spreads more efficiently from person to person.

D614G, otherwise known as the "G" mutation, first appeared in January and has since become the dominant strain, usurping the original "L" and "S" variants.

In a Facebook post, Malaysian Health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said the D614G mutation was first detected in July, and studies would likely reveal that any existing vaccine is ineffective against the mutation.

The D614G strain has already been widely reported because it has been the dominant strain in Europe and the Americas nearly since their first cases. It is newsworthy that it has now made its way to Asia, and about a month ago South Korea revealed their newest cases were predominantly the G strain. We should hope that it does not make its way to Indonesia since it is 5-10 times more infectious (with similar virulence), depending on which study you read.

However, Malaysia's Health director-general is not in agreement with most other experts regarding vaccine effectiveness. In fact, the vaccines being tested in the US and Europe will be primarily tested against the G strain.

Summary: The virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2, presents at least six strains. Despite its mutations, the virus shows little variability, and this is good news for the researchers working on a viable vaccine.

Experts in Singapore say there is no basis for Malaysia's claim that it has found a strain of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 that is 10 times more infectious.

They also say this strain - D614G - which is already found in Singapore, will have no impact on vaccine development.

Since Malaysia guy apparently wasn't even aware that the "G" strain is the one that is all over Europe since February, I'm more inclined to believe the Singaporean expert...

I am horrified to learn today that some brands of Hand Sanitizer use Methanol instead of Ethanol or Isopropyl Alcohol. Below is what I found;

Methanol (or methyl alcohol) should not be used as a hand sanitizer, hand rub, or surface cleaner to kill the virus that causes the COVID-19 ("coronavirus") disease. Ethanol (or ethyl alcohol) and isopropanol (orisopropyl alcohol) are two alcohols that can be safely and effectively used to sanitize hands and to disinfect surfaces. None of these alcohols can cure COVID-19. Methanol is not a safe alcohol to use because it can cause serious damage to organs in the body if a person swallows it, breathes it in, or gets it on their skin.

If you buy from a reputable brand this wont be an issue as they will have had to register their active ingredient with the BPOM. I work in the cosmetic industry here and have been performing tests on a bunch of hand sanitizers lately (many companies are launching this product format now). None have had any methanol in them.

Good to know that reputable brands should be no problem, the problem could be those hand sanitizers produced by "home industries". I guess it confirmed my suspicion when I saw a perfume shop with the sign "For Sale - Methanol for hand sanitizers" (translated from Indonesian). Last week, I saw a customer buying a 5-liter 'Spiritus' at Transmart, what for? If I learned about the danger earlier, I would have asked her. Anyway, I wonder why the perfume shop labelled it as "Methanol" instead of just "Alcohol". But Alcohol can be one of three types or more in Indonesia as it can also be beer, whiskey, vodka, etc.

Today is a strange working day because banks are closed (suddenly without announcement days in advance). Don't know why, perhaps to save costs (electricity and water bills)?

Earlier this week, I witnessed 2 incidents;
1. A bank customer exiting out of the bank door removed his mask, cough a few times, then spit on the ground just outside the bank.
2. Customer entering the bank and refusing the temperature check, he told the security guard that it's useless (in Indonesian).

not sure about here but this warning has been in the US media for a month now. Still, more are producing it. Mainly coming from other countries when applying to the US. Just shows that one must read labels. If labels are not specific, pass it up. If planning to make your own, approved alcohols are readily available at reasonable prices. We have made 70% ethanol, 30% aloe that is available throughout our home and at our gate.

They are correct. Side by side will always give a different reading. Measuring devises need to be occasionally calibrated. Doubt that ever happens. So many have found readings for me around 33. That would not be a good things either. Next store could be closer to 37. That's a big difference. Thermal imaging they use is no better.

I gave up using hanitizer (hubby's name for it)
We have soap & water & wash our hands at home, I then carry wet wipes with me to clean down all surfaces* before I touch them, I then wash my hands.
example at supermarket- temp check- yep, temp of a hour dead corpse...
guided to hand wash- me no thanks, go get my trolley & clean it, then go to the hand wash.
All this hand washing and putting alcohol on gives a very real chance of having skin reactions all the natural oils are being removed.

* try this for yourselves, you will be horrified at things that are supposedly sanitized- atm keypads icky, escalator rails, shudder!
etc..

I use 190-proof Everclear in a pocket spray bottle. Since prices of hand sanitizers have increased tremendously, using liquor with 95% alcohol doesn’t cost that much more. As an added bonus, it smells kinda sweet and is actually drinkable, unlike isopropyl alcohol with that harsh smell.

It’s rarely used anyway, I only spray it after I leave a store or restaurant.

I have had a couple of 34 degree readings at school... funny, I did not have any other symptoms of... freaking hypothermia! The thermo guns are inaccurate af, but then again, they give us cover to have some semblance of normalcy, so we "keep calm and carry on"

The ethanol you buy is only 96% at the most, 4% is water. So if you mix 70% ethanol and 30% aloe, you get less than 70% alcohol content. If you want at least 70% alcohol, you should mix 73% ethanol and 27% aloe.

Rules are rules, even if it is ridiculous. Rules are designed to protect everyone, flaunting the rules is not a good example, especially when there are children around. It shows disrespect for others, anyway, that's only my opinion.
