True, but the atmosphere is also important. The Cafe restaurant of Mulia hotel lately is crowded with families who bring their anak-anak yang crying, shouting and running. For me .. 🤬

Looks fantastic .. I will try this Sunday brunch🤩 .. next time.

Unless it includes free fine wines. I completely agree, it is a fantastic price in Indonesia.

Paying Rp.688,000 for a single meal in Indonesia ?? Mehhhh ...
Some magazines, newsletters, websites, social media get paid to keep promoting this sort of venues, prices for uninformed people as if Rp.688,000 is a normal price for one meal (no alcohol). I guess many of their customers are uninformed tourists, people on business travel where the meals are covered by their employers.

The harsh reality in Indonesia (not just limited to Jakarta), is that spending Rp.688,000 on one meal is equivalent to almost a week net salary for the many people. In Indonesia, there's a tendency to inflate prices for various things like restaurants, rents, doctors, private healthcare mimicking the practices of developed countries where the costs of labour, salaries, education and training, land, raw materials, etc., are considerably higher. They prefer those places, property vacant for prolonged duration of time. Just observe how long they could stay in this business practice.

"According to a report from the Statista Research Department dated September 19, 2023, the real estate industry emerged as the highest-paying sector in Indonesia as of February 2023, offering an average monthly net wage of around 4.82 million Indonesian rupiah. In contrast, the agricultural sector was the lowest-paying industry. Interestingly, when considering the number of people employed, the situation is reversed."

Yes, I agree. I spent in JW Marriot Sailendra Rp. 675.000 for 2 persons, based on the promo pay 1 get 2. Still good deal. My wife and I are not big eaters. If I had to pay full price, I would feel "rugi"

Yes you're sort of right but it's not a single meal it's a 3 hour unlimited buffet with expensive items such as steaks lobster crayfish sushi sashimi etc and free soft drinks so even your average guest can "break even"
No one is going just to eat 7 bowls of rice

The long bar sells the ready made touristy sweet version
Go to the writers bar and request the original version which they will make from scratch for you

It's a buffet, so it depends what is on offer....

Comparing to the average local salary is irrelevant, would you compare the price of a 5 star buffet in a top Paris or London hotel with the country's minimum salary ?
Had regulary nice buffet lunches when living in BKK, the real killer is the drinks.
One aperitif each and a decent bottle of wine (no Aussie or US stuff...) will cost you a bit of $ $ $ !

This even further strengthens the argument that the food at this establishment is overprice. Buffets are expected to cost less than individually prepared meals (à la carte) offering the same dishes. This is primarily due to the advantages of economies of scale and increased labour and space efficiency.

Certainly, if they target a specific niche market like guests from Raffles Hotel or foreigners on business trips, the local salary may not be a significant factor. However, the number of individuals in this category is likely limited. I doubt that a substantial number of affluent residents in Jakarta would be interested in dining at a buffet restaurant.

You would be surprised. In the Mulia Hotel (restaurant The Cafe) it was packed on the two times I was there this month. Same at the restaurant Grand Melia a month ago. At JW Marriot (Sailendra) luckely not crowded and only adults last Thursday, no kids running around like in The Mulia.

I expect on New Years Eve it will be packed at all hotels in Jakarta. We booked a table at Cascade Lounge with Buffet Dinner and live performance Marion Jola.

So yeah, there is a substantial number of residents in Jakarta who can afford buffet lunches and dinners in 5 star hotels. Would that be the upper class, avoiding the malls where the middle class have there lunches and dinner?

More tricks according to this vlogger...

That's correct. Most of those hotel buffets are completely full booked solid sold out for weeks at a time to indonesian families.

Usually kids have a whole seperate area, play area creche etc with clowns, cinema etc etc
