Banking question for Indonesian citizens overseas...

But you have to click or download something first right?
Not sure how having my photo will help you get my money from BCA
You need my fingerprint and all my passwords and pins which some of them are regenerated every transaction, like they send me a 6 digit pin to my phone to put into the machine or the desktop popup and then I get an email or text immediately to confirm ?

Theres nothing on my bank that requires my face, they don't do skype or zoom or VC anyway

And going in the branch need my ID passport AND they take a photo of me at the counter with their little camera too

One quick question, do you need a certain amount of money to open an account at HSBC ? I only heard good things and we might wanna open an account there.

  1. Maintain a Total Relationship Balance (TRB) with us of Rp 1 Billion or more, or
  2. Meet one of the specific conditions below:
    • Deposit an individual monthly income of at least Rp 50 million into your account, or
    • Hold a mortgage with us with a minimum initial value of Rp 1.5 Billion, or
    • Have an HSBC Premier account in another country that meets the local HSBC Premier criteria, or
    • Have an HSBC Premier Payroll account, or
    • Have an HSBC Fusion individual account with a combined TRB of HSBC Premier and HSBC Fusion individual or HSBC Fusion individual business loan at least Rp 1 billion, or
    • Have an HSBC Premier EBS Executive account with minimum TRB Rp500 million within 12 months since account opening date.
    • Customer who qualifies one of the above HSBC Premier criteria can open HSBC Premier facility for their children with no minimum Total Relationship Balance (TRB) required and no fee.

BTW fyi if you "don't" keep a balance they just charge a monthly admin fee, but if they think you are poor and just BS then they might downgrade you to Advance only. For example if the house sale proceeds take 9 months to arrive etc
So either have an HSBC account somewhere else, or just transfer 50jt a month and leave it in there and transfer some out but be consistent and regular, that's all they want really.

Thanks a lot for the info. I just saw that the local branch isn't far away from my place. We will just go there these days and ask them what's up. I think the criterias you mentioned here should be possible to fulfill.

Senayan (Plaza Senayan)
WTC (opposite Samporno tower, Allianz, Meridien Hotel)
Maybe one in PIM or something but those 2 I know for sure

WTC is bigger and quiet usually
PS one is smaller

Depends on the software or app of course. But face recognition as only method of verification is rather risky. I even prefer fingerprint over that (but no more in the iPhone after the 8). Better to have double verification with OTP (so you get a code via sms).

I'm not buying this without more quality documentation of the alleged software and how it works. Fingerprints and face scans aren't stored on any device as is, they are turned into a key that would mean nothing even if decrypted when presented on a different system. Is is only used internally and never leaves the phone. Plus there are many more places to match on an Apple 3D face scan than there are a 2D fingerprint.

HSBC in the US requires min balance of $75,000. They closed their retail banking with account below $75,000. But with this premier account in the US you can open account in Indonesia as premier as long as you keep the min amount in the US. You can transfer between account under your name for free.
I would suggest you open in USD and Rupiah in Indonesia, and transfer incoming in USD, then convert to your Rupiah account. This way you will save with good conversion rate between your dollar and Rp account.
Last time I called HSBC Indonesia, they only required passport and Kitas/Kitap.

When was that? Because they want NPWP also these days.
Every year they call you in to update all your docs etc. So they are on the ball and strict.
BCA not so much. I'm the one who goes to them annually and offers up new passport kitas etc etc

About last month. I said I dont have NPWP.
AFAIK with BCA, WNI can open acc without NPWP (if you dont have NPWP)

Edit: Oops, now is April already, then it was about 2-3 months ago. Time fliesss......

You are Indonesian

We are talking WNA. Foreigners. A for Asing

I called HSBC as a WNA, that's why they asked for passport and Kitas/Kitap.
As for BCA for WNI, I thought WNA also can open without NPWP.
Hmmm...

No dear that's 2 seperate things (obviously)
WNA theoretically needs npwp and KITAS/P and passport of course. And banyak uang

WNI only ID and sedikit uang

There are a lot of discussions about the pros and cons of using biometrics as a means of verification/authentication.

I personally prefer not to use biometric verification, if I could still avoid it. The strong argument against using biometric verification is that while you could still replace your password, your cards, your physical secure key, your email, and your phone number, your mobile devices, Desktop PCs. But you cannot replace your finger, eyes, face, etc. I do not just believe a simple statement stating that my personal data, ID, Biometric data will not be shared or stored in their systems. The best precaution is not to share it if there is still an option not to do that.

I prefer Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) using password and additional physical secure keys and/or another verification using phone numbers, another email, etc.

Banks, fintechs, and app developers prefer biometric verification because it is easier for them and more secure for them in case there are bugs or loopholes in their systems that could be exploited by hackers. Also, in countries with strong regulators, they are required to replace all the money that went missing, taken by third parties without your knowledge if it is due to their failure to monitor irregular activities.

The main thing to understand is that using a cellphone, your biometric data is not stored or transmitted to anyone. Everything stays on the device and the information is basically converted to a key. An image of your face is not stored, nor is an image of your fingerprints. The data is used to make a key, that's it. It either matches or it doesn't based on the datapoints, not an actual image.

Also, if you travel to foreign countires, a lot of them will fingerprint you and store the actual fingerprints that can be shared with anyone world wide. How secure do you think their information really is?

For HSBC and BCA, having an NPWP was not obligatory until a few years ago. However, the requirement has since changed. Nowadays, in addition to ITAS/ITAP, many banks in Indonesia, though not all, stipulate that a WNA must possess an NPWP to open a bank account.
OCBC, Bank Permata, and Bank Danamon may still permit you to open a bank account without requiring an NPWP. The initial deposit required to open a bank account in HSBC, BCA, or other Indonesian banks as a WNA is not substantial.

To open a basic account as a bule sure yes probably 1jt only
But remember there are monthly fees
But to physically open the account every account must have some small deposit to activate it, even 1jt aja

There are official rules from BI about what is required regarding full service account or WNA, again some may allow you to open it and promise to send the NPWP "later" and never follow up

Previously in Bali you could open just a normal savings deposit account as a tourist with a vanila ATM card only, not debit card, but now since BCA and most of the others use the Mastercard or Visa debit card system it is hard to find an account for WNA with "only" ATM cash withdrawal unless its a Flazz or some gimmicky one

Certainly no full service banking or credit facilities without NPWP etc etc
Even I think for klikbca, mbca etc you need to have the full service?

Premier and Prioritas different of course, they expect you to open it with a decent chunk and or to transfer it in a reasonable time

YMMV
