Banking question for Indonesian citizens overseas...

What branch here does your European bank have? Impossible

And if you are retired and over 55 you will find it near impossible to even open a proper current / checking account. Zero chance of a credit card.

How long have you been here? Bit late now to be sorting these things
I pray you have health / medical insurance at least?

No not just bca but all banks should and supposed to request bpwp kitas kitaP etc

It's strict these days
Unfortunately it seems you are a bit phucked my friend

Should have planned this all years ago

Now you will end up here with no insurance no credit and no means to access your cash
Thanks for your prays, I have medical insurance. Also I have a BNI bank account + debit card. So, I won't be without funds here. I also still have my bankcard from Holland and can use this card here for paying. Only my credit card is now expired. If all these options fail one day .. I have a wife (WNI) to rely on .. with her bank facilities.😀

Lol ok all cool then
Life sorted
And only 45 years old

I find little to no use for a credit card here. We use our US Debit cards for ATM use and deposit money into my wife's Mandiri accounts. With bank apps and on line payments, everything goes quite smoothly.

You mean US or Indonesian Credit card ?
For US creditcard, If you are buying from International vendors, retailers such as International Flight, International Chain Hotel Booking while you are residing in Indonesia, your US credit card will make a difference. Also consider the conversion from USD, they might be just be using a USD, so no conversion will be getting involved.
For buying high value item in plaza, malls, in Indonesia you could still use your US credit card, although it might be more useful to just use your wife Indonesian debit card as it is already in IDR.

Our US debit cards can be used the same as a credit card for the services you listed. As for using a foreign credit card for anything in Indonesia the exchange rate is crap. Plus, by using out debit cards we don't have to face payments later. Our debit cards have no fees attached to usage.

Yes, all above and .. my credit card from The Netherlands was also usefull to pay the bill - rather expensive- of the hospital here in Indonesia.

Deposit for credit cards is not only in Indonesia, but also in several other countries including US. My daughters studied in USA and UK. I recall had to put a deposit to get a credit card with a limit according to the deposit value. I have no issue to get the Cc in if HSBC premier is available in the country but for local bank, the deposit requirement might apply.
if I'm not mistaken they call it a secured credit card. I think it's more about the bank's trust to their unstellar customers to pay back their credit.

I have a creditcard from a bank in The Netherlands. Because this card is expired, the bank sent a new credit card, but never arrived at my adress in Indonesia. I asked the bank to send me again a new one. This card also never arrived. I am without a creditcard now for more than 4 months. Anyone similar experience with creditcards not arriving in Indonesia?
All of a sudden my bank ING in Holland blocked my credit card, because unauthorised people have my credit card info, the message said. They will send a new credit card to me. WTF!
So, the whole proces of sending the card with DHL by my family has to start all over again. 😵‍💫

Been through this with a US bank twice in the last 5 years. Always costs me $50 to get the card sent from the US to here by my family. In the last 10 years I've had my card info get stolen or cloned at least 4 times and it always seems to happen when I am back in the US. I don't find out about it until I'm back overseas. Plan to just get a new card on every trip I make to there and not have to spend so much money on shipping. One time I only used the card with one airline and the number was compromised 2 months later. Terrible state cards are in.

I think a data breach at some organisation occurred, e.g. Yahoo com or Booking.com. So, credit card info is stolen. Whatever, blocking the card, makes things not easier. I am thinking of cancelling my creditcard. I only use it for subscription purposes like Fitness First MS Onedrive and such.

Credit card exchange rates do not work in your favour. I presume you have a bank account that had provided the card. A much more effective way of having funds would be to use Wise.com to transfer from your o'seas account to your BNI account. Rates are cheaper than banks for transfers and exchange rates much better often better than you would get at a walk in money exchange in Indonesia. You can open the Wise website without registering and check the results for a transfer.

Unfortunately like all these big IT companies not so easy to get a good response if you have a problem but transfers I make move from my Australian account to my local account in just seconds.

Yes, I also use Wise to transfer funds from my bank overseas to BNI. Exchange rates are better than banks. However, I didn't check the differences lately.

I use a creditcard mainly to pay for subcriptions, like backups to Onedrive and iCloud. There are no other ways to pay for those subscriptions besides maybe Paypall. Cancelling my creditcard will force me to cancel the subscriptions.

You can pay for iCould with a gift card. Just have a friend buy an Apple Gift Card and send you the picture. Scan that picture with your iPhone and you have credit on the account. Not sure about Onedrive.

Yes, good idea. Maybe I will do that.

Another worldwide threat...

Cybercriminals have found a new way to steal money. They can steal faces from phone users and gain access to their bank accounts to plunder them.

The Chinese hacker group GoldFactory uses so-called malware to remove the faces from iOS and Android devices

One quick question, do you need a certain amount of money to open an account at HSBC ? I only heard good things and we might wanna open an account there.

HSBC premier requires 1bio idr believe. HSBC expat requires a job with 100k usd salary or 50k usd min deposit.

Hsbc advance? Normal
Premier? $50k total holdings
Plus npwp kitas etc
But you can open it and promise to transfer later. Plus it includes total global assets held with Hsbc. Savings in dubai. Bonds in Zurich. Etc

Malware consists of apps that do not come from the official Play Store or App Store and aim to steal data from devices.

These types of malicious programs install themselves on phones unintentionally and often unnoticed via phishing. The hackers then have access to the data on that device, such as login details, the fingerprint and facial scan that people use to unlock their phone and apps.

Once criminals have access to that data, they can use artificial intelligence to relatively easily create fake images of someone's face, so-called deepfakes. They use these images to deceive facial scans and thus gain access to your bank account, for example, after which it is a piece of cake to empty it.
