AirAsia world's best low-cost airline for 9th consecutive year.

Maybe the level of competition does not place the bar very high.

Well if you compare AirAsia with Jetstar, what can you say

How on earth is AirAsia a 3 star airline? They won't even give me water unless I pay extra. I'm awkwardly tall for their standard seats and they wouldn't let me switch to one of the many empty emergency exit seats during the flight -- "Sorry sir, those seats are for people who paid to sit there." At least with Lion Air, they'll give me a seat with leg room for free when I check in. And drinks on the flight.

I believe Skytrax works on a passenger review system to set its stars...you could email and make your point and they might degrade next year.
BTW last time I flew Lion Air JKT-Bali vv there was no in-flight service available...nothing... even if I wanted to pay.
I just flew Air Asia Bali-JKT on Tuesday and, for a little extra cost when reserving, we got seats of choice, 20k baggage and a sandwich. Even with the extra cost.... the same day/time flight was cheaper than Lion Air.
I'm not advocating one over the other...being a Scot I go for the cheapest as it's only just over an hour flight.

That's really odd about your experience with Lion Air! They're still a budget airline, so I guess I'm not totally surprised. Personally, I would pay a bit more (within reason) just to avoid the AirAsia sales team, I mean flight attendants, trying to sell me dumb souvenirs.

What's really great is when I can find a promo price for Garuda on the dates I want, which has happened a couple times. One time they were the cheapest direct flight, and another time marginally more expensive than the cheapest option. Didn't hesitate for a second!

I'm thinking maybe it's only on the Bali-JKTvv route they don't provide anything as it's so short.
Air Asia sure try to sell anything they can. On Tuesday I saw a bule opposite buy cup noodles that can be bought from any store for a quarter of the price he paid.
I use Traveloka to search for fares locally and sometimes Garuda and Citilink have cheap promos but you're correct....if you don't commit quickly...they're gone.

Funny story...I'm a cheap charlie and booked Air Asia to Bali and my wife's brother and wife, who boasts about his Garuda gold card and I know frowns on flying Air Asia, was coming to join us in Bali on his beloved Garuda at about the same departure time.
We arrived at the terminals to find his flight delayed and ours on time.
My wife and I got to Bali and had to wait for them so I had some beer at the airport.
Chatting on the ride back to our villa I asked if he enjoyed the free food and drink on Garuda...he grumped and said he was asleep the whole flight...:biggrin1:

We just buy our Garuda tickets from their ticket offices. Over 60 gets an additional 10% off. Basically, you get the regular ticket for the value ticket price even if they are unavailable with the bennies of cancelation or rescheduling of the regular ticket.

I'm currently searching for cheap flights Jakarta-Bali from 3-9 July. The cheapest I can find, at a reasonable departure time AM, is Lion Air at between Rp 550-700,000.
Garuda would cost over twice as much.
Any help is appreciated.

An AirAsia plane bound for KL has just had to return to Perth. Report with video.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/bus...n/news-story/5222c649c3f22f2c66908e6fa8e592ab

A pilot has turned around an AirAsia flight on its way from Perth to Malaysia due to a technical problem with the plane.

Flight D7237 departed just before 7am (WST) on Sunday for Kuala Lumpur but returned shortly after take off to Perth after the pilot identified a “technical issue”, a Perth Airport spokesman said.

Brenton Atkinson, 24, who was on-board, told the ABC the plane started shaking like a “washing machine”.

“It was essentially the engine seized up I think, that’s what they told us anyway,” he said.

Vanhelsing......your link to the Australian needs a subscription of Au$4/week to open.

Thanks Van...wow! that shaking is scary.....glad to see it landed safely. I'll be following that up to see what caused all that shaking.

edit: Another report says a compressor (or turbine) blade sheared off the left engine. I would think it must have stuck inside and seized the engine and the shaking was aerodynamic buffeting.
Generally, when an engine fails, it will still rotate and there is no impediment to the airflow though the engine. In this seized case the air would build-up ahead of the engine intake and cause that buffeting.
The pilot said he was going to fly slower on return to Perth, which would be an appropriate action to reduce the buffet.
I'm surprised he didn't need to jettison fuel to get down to a landing weight.

It certainly would be a very long remaining thirty minutes to Perth. I'd be interested to know what an inquiry reveals. I'd also like to know what speed they're doing in the video, warnings in the cockpit etc. Guess we'll have to wait for the Air Crash Investigations episode.

This Air Asia X incident (Vanheslings post #12) has become news on CNN Today where they show a video and expert analysis. I'm sure it will be repeated throughout the day.

For those who have flown Easyjet, how would you compare them with Air Asia? Only main differences I can think of are unassigned seats(first come, first serve) vs assigned and prepaid meals.

I've actually been very happy with AirAsia, they've been better than my Garuda flights. :noidea:

Skytrax gives easyjet 3 stars.
Air Asia used to have unassigned seats but it was chaotic.
It's chaotic even with assigned seats...a lady was in my seat when I boarded on Tuesday.
She didn't want to move so I gave up and asked the F/A to direct her to her assigned seat. It was clear she wanted our whole row for herself and her daughter in front wanted her whole row and, I guess, she'd selected that seat configuration with that in mind.
Most Air Asia flights Bali-JKT vv are full... except for the red-covered seats which cost more.
