4/11, 25/11 and 2/12 anti-Ahok demonstrations

Oh, the old out of town expert defense. Hope it does not turn out like the Australian forensic expert fiasco.

I am getting mixed signals regarding 25 November... Some sources are saying that it is canceled due to the legal process already being initiated. Others (including PPP) are saying that it is still on. Still others are saying that 25 November will be "anti-Jokowi" rather than "anti-Ahok". Some contingencies have already been made. For example, our students' first exam was moved from Friday, 25 November to the day before. Our students will have a normal school schedule except for an early dismissal on that Friday. Of course, this leaves the door open for classes to be canceled with minimal disruption to the students.

For Santa Ursula and Theresia, close to the cathedral, nothing is communicated yet. But if there is a demo, they will be closed that day.

The press is also confused. Depending on who they talk to from one political party or religious organization, they get different answers.

you can't tell it's a rigged demo when people don't know anymore for what reason they will make a demo.

It's very ridiculous!

The KPI and others are calling for an anti Ahok rally on the 25th. If it comes out that Ahok is not arrested for blasphemy, it will become an anti Jokowi rally demanding his removal from office. The PPP said there will be a rally and they would be part of it but only to stop any lawbreakers that they encounter. The police have stated there will be no rally on the 25th but added that people has the right to assemble peacefully from 6AM until 6PM in an open space. Jokowi has announced that there are political backers and instigators for the rallies. The police and military have come out announcing that they are with Jokowi. A few religious organizations have come out with support for no rally.

The result of the police investigation is supposed to be released today (Wednesday).
I suspect if anyone causes mayhem there will be extreme retribution by the Gov't.
There is already some by-product from these extremists that is causing trouble for the Indonesian economy....viz...

'.... incidents such as the
anti-Ahok protest in Jakarta and the church bombing in Samarinda have made taxpayers hesitant in joining the tax amnesty program as they now think twice about keeping their assets in the country for the next three years.'

Hmm. He won't come, family health issues it seems.

From Jakarta Post
It seems the local Muslims didn't like that idea.
Ahok’s legal team was previously reported to present Seikh Amr al-Wardani, a respected Muslim scholar of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, to prove that their client had not committed blasphemy. However, after protests from Islamic groups that demanded he “stay away from Indonesian Muslim affairs”, Ahok’s legal team announced that Wardani should return to Egypt, apparently over a family issue

MetroTV reports that the police pre-investigation has concluded to send the documents to the prosecutor, for further investigation, to see if a criminal charge can be made.
This is only my surmise...anybody got better info?

Ahok has been "upgraded" to "tersangka" meaning that he is now a suspect. Previously he was merely called in as a witness. This is a common step in Indonesian law, the next step is for the police to complete a file to be presented to prosecutors and then trial will proceed.

Meanwhile, Jokowi is continuing his tour of various military units, yesterday he inspected the air force's special forces unit (PASKHAS), and today he is at the Army's Strategic Command HQ (KOSTRAD)...

Have named Ahok a suspect in the case.

Police Criminal Investigation Unit chief Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto has announced today the results of investigation into alleged blasphemy committed by Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

"Although there are different opinions among police investigators, most agreed that the case should be settled in an open trial," the head of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), Comr. Gen. Ari Dono, said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Afraid of the big bad wolf(FPI) I suspect.

My deep-inner-cynical-mind suggests this is a holding pattern at least until the election in February. This gives ample time to be elected...or not.

If he isn't then the FPI has accomplished their objective without a problem...so on to the next Sharia project.

If he is then the Gov't will drop the case anyway...and lo behold any anarchy that FPI incites....as indicated by dafluff's 2nd para above.

If no one candidate wins the majority in February, the uncertainty could extend until a runoff election at a later date.

I think some political power will find other ways before the election to get their chosen one elected.

Would being named a suspect in a criminal case make him ineligible to run for governor?

The whole case of blasphemy has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with gaining power by the street....and not by the ballot.

If Indonesian people acquiesce to that anarchy...then bye-bye to everything they've achieved since Independence.

A suspect does not deny eligibility...being guilty does.
