Won't do you a lot of good if the new exploit is not detected by the system. That is the reason to have security updates. A system no longer getting security updates is a security nightmare. Also going on line with a Windows 7 machine now is equivalent to working your way through the brothel without a condom. I thought you didn't want to give bad advice?
I don't know if it is because : I am luck , hackers never targeted me , and/or I don't open suspicious emails/files , that I never had any problem using computer/Chromebook/Android phone/tablet , even not constantly updating their OS . I personally don't deal with sensitive data , except internet banking/similar which have additional security features , so I tend to be less concerned with updates . But of course I should , as much as possible , use any software updated as recommended by its producer .

This has been going in for over 50 years Now! It is a time old tactic to just breed out a culture over time. I remember a time, when if someone was caught distributing even a photo of the Dalai Lama they would get in trouble! But don't Forget, Australia, and America did this also! Australia forced the Aboriginal children into Boarding schools, as well as the Americans forced the Native American (Indians) children into Boarding schools! In anticipating such a response, I think it fair to say that in most Muslim societies there are radicals who would resort to terrorism to bring about a caliphate and Shariah law. This is a serious threat to any country where such people emerge. In most countries such passionate extremist advocates are in the minority but the potential for calamity is there. So China does have a genuine security concern but addressing the issue in the way reported fundamentally becomes a repressive measure tending towards an extremist mind set not so far from the actual fundamentalists they are seeking to guard against.
