In the news:
A Philippine ship collided with a Chinese boat near the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea today.
According to the Chinese coast guard, the Philippine supply ship ignored the Chinese ship's warnings. “The Philippine ship deliberately approached the Chinese ship in an unprofessional manner, resulting in a collision," the Chinese coast guard’s statement read. Not only that, the country claims the Philippine ship illegally entered waters near one of the disputed Spratly Islands. “The Coast Guard has taken control measures against the Philippine vessel in accordance with the law.”
Manila has accused the Chinese coast guard of “barbaric and inhuman behavior” against Philippine ships. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has called the new rules a "very worrisome" escalation.
China claims almost the entire South China Sea, although the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague rejected this claim in 2016.
