Death toll now tops 830, so in terms of lives lost it has already surpassed Lombok, and it is very early in the search and rescue efforts.

From what I have read it was an underwater landslide that triggered the tsunami, I have no idea how that impacts things re warnings, again from what I have read online apparently this is different to an earthquake tsunami- something to do with epicentres.
I shall cite Wikkipedia & hope you forgive me as I haven't had chance to research further,

"With the speed at which tsunami waves travel through open water, no system can protect against a very sudden tsunami, where the coast in question is too close to the epicenter. A devastating tsunami occurred off the coast of Hokkaidō in Japan as a result of an earthquake on July 12, 1993. As a result, 202 people on the small island of Okushiri, Hokkaido lost their lives, and hundreds more were missing or injured. This tsunami struck just three to five minutes after the quake, and most victims were caught while fleeing for higher ground and secure places after surviving the earthquake. This was also the case in Aceh, Indonesia.

According to this graphic released by the BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency), there was only about 10 minutes between the quake and the tsunami hitting Palu. Really not enough time to do much.

This is a video taken just after take off at 18:02 local time in Palu. It shows what could be the beginning of the tsunami. This was taken by the captain of the Batik Air flight, the very same one that was the last flight cleared for take off by the brave ATC who lost his life.

Just heard about 925 casualties. And it hasn’t ended yet. So it seems Kalla’s prediction was correct; this is really bad.

Belgium:

Consortium 12-12
The Belgian aid organizations behind the Consortium 12-12 have decided to start a joint collection campaign. They call on Belgians to make donations to the account number BE19 0000 0000 1212. The money is used for first emergency aid, such as clean water, tents and food. The Consortium consists of seven aid organizations: Caritas International, Handicap International, Doctors of the World, Oxfam Solidarity, Plan Belgium, Unicef Belgium and the Belgian Red Cross.

The Netherlands:

The Netherlands provides 1 million euros for aid to victims of the earthquake and tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The Dutch Red Cross has opened account number 6868 (giro 6868 dat is NL83INGB0000006868, met 6 nullen) to raise money for aid of Sulawesi. According to the organization, 20 million euro is needed.

Standard earthquake drill is to drop, cover, hold and then get out of tall buildings.

Looking at how that hotel fell down there then i guess you have to be very selective about which tall building you pick in Indonesia too. In the photos its surrounded by older buildings that are fine. Dodgy cheap construction and engineering.

Early reports already count over 300 deaths, although according to VP Jusuf Kalla, the number could be in the thousands. I think his estimate is reasonable, and it would make this the largest disaster in Indonesia since the Aceh Tsunami.

After Aceh tsunami in 2004, there was Yogyakarta earthquake in 2006 with more than 6000 deaths. I really hope there won't be that many victims.
