SIM Internasional (International Driving License)

Malaysian licence and 100k note works :ROFLMAO:

If its gonna be like that I'll just wait for the Kitap to finish and get my Sim. I really just don't want to go back to the office here and have to waste another entire day and a bunch of money for a piece of paper I won't need.

Malaysia already did that to me this year. Now I have 4 valid driver's license cards here with just different addresses and driving class. 😑

Hi everyone,

I made a SIM Internasional some years ago when I was still on KITAP. Due to personal circumstances, I am now on KITAS.

My SIM Internasional has already expired so I need to make a new one for an upcoming trip.

I was delighted to see that the procedure is now done online, however the requirement for foreigners is to have a KITAP.

Has anyone successfully applied with a KITAS only?
Even with a valid licence you still need good knees. How is your knee now? Have you recovered and what did you do to fix it?

I just got my Indonesian SIM today and I read that it allows me to drive in any of the ASEAN countries without IDP. In theory I imagine the same can be said for you here but in practice who knows. Try find some malaysians living here to ask them!

In principle Asean licenses should be recognized without an IDP. However, the reality is that few police officers are aware of this and would expect to see an IDP. If it was me, I'd carry on riding with the Malaysian license and no IDP and in the very unlikely event of being stopped and fined (at least here in Bali where the police have largely given up on road traffic law enforcement), would contest the charge in court and present the Asean treaty provisions.

In Bandung I'm not sure how likely I'd get pulled over as long as I cover up completely(due to my amount of ink) 😅 lately they've been doing a lot of traffic operations and seizing bikes(mostly for aftermarket exhaust or because it's an electric bicycle) seeing as my bike is an unmodified 1972 GL100 I'm hoping I won't have any issue but I've seen some pretty aggressive officers there.

If you have a KITAS now, you don't need to wait for your KITAP to get your local SIM.

From what I was told in Bandung they only give you a Sim equal to the length of your Kitas & sktt if you get it while under Kitas.

Meaning it would expire and I'd be SOL when I need to renew/convert to Kitap next month/Februaryish

I believe they changed that to all SUMs were 5 years.

Hello, I am an american living in Bali and have a Kitap and Indonesian Drivers licenses.
I am planning a trip back to the USA and just applied for the Indonesian International Drivers License,
I submitted the documents online, paid the fee and waited 15 days only to receive a message that it was not approved. Apparently I was missing a document but not sure as no more detail was given.

Is there a Agent anyone can recommend who I can hire to process the application for me?

Just for the record, you can drive in most states in the US on a foreign liscense for 30 days.

If you are an American, where is your American driver's license? Expired? Did you ever have one?

Expired a long time ago. Last time I was there I went to renew it but when they said I could drive 30 days without one so I don't see the need to pay them $35 for something I won't use. Not really sure why that matters but...

Two comments. First, the list of documents is very straightforward, so it shouldn't be difficult to ascertain what was missing. Second, there is a WA number that you can use to communicate with the officer in charge to have your questions answered. The number is in my post #12 above.

How long will you visit the USA and what states? The laws vary from state to state, but most allow you to use a foreign license in the US for up to a 3 month US visit, or an IDP with foreign license for up to 1 year.

One potential problem is the state laws sometimes stipulate that the driver's license be in English. My Indonesian SIM does say "Driving License" in English, but my gender, address, occupation, and all the small print on the back are only in Indonesian. Would this be accepted in the US? I have personally taken that risk before, but never had it tested with a police encounter.

Mine was in Georgia. I stopped by the state patrol office and showed it to them. They just want to make sure it is a driver's license and not some generic ID card. They did specifially say 30 days per visit.

It appears the law in Georgia allows the indefinite use of a foreign license if you have not established residency in Georgia. If you become a Georgia resident, you have 30 days to get a Georgia license, which is what the officers you spoke with were probably thinking of.

My US license was issued in the early 90’s, and is valid until I’m 65 years old.

Just got back from Polres Bandung. Apparently no one has every heard of the 1985 agreement where ASEAN Driver's licenses can be used in other ASEAN countries.

Was asked to contact Jakarta and get written confirmation from them 😅

As for making a license it requires an STM and a domicile letter. Which makes no sense as I have my SKTT which I just renewed.

The list they gave is as follows:
-sponsor letter from my wife
-her KTP & KK
-domicile letter
-STM
-my front page passport copy
-kitas
-sktt

The lady at the desk asked me to WhatsApp her when I have all the documents, but not sure if she wanted the under table or over table process since Raya is coming soon.

Originally I just asked for the process of it all since the wall says there is a simulator, and the course for the cars is currently full of confiscated bikes.😅
