Nuclear submarines and regional security.

Come on who's going to invade Australia it takes 100 days to get there and every thing that flies or crawls is venomous.

You'd be dead 20 steps up the beach

That is if you get to the beach. If you are coming by sea keep an eye out for bull sharks and white pointers, venomous sea snakes and the very pretty little blue ringed octopus found in the shallows and would fit in the palm of your hand. Ohh yes... they are poisonous.

No crocs or stingers?

No crocs or stingers?
Oops, yes. Sorry about that. If you come ashore in the northern parts of there is the box jellyfish which inflicts really painful stings and worse is the irukundji a type of jellyfish which is about the size of a match and being stung by one of them is described as the kind of pain inflicted with major road trauma. There is a video of a marine biologist who had been stung by an irukundji and despite a massive amount of morphine was still writhing in agony. If you have a dickie heart then it is probably goodbye world.

And again, in the tropics, there are the saltwater crocodiles. They are seriously mean, big buggers that if comparing them with alligators, the saltie is a hells angel motorcyclist and the alligator is a hippie on a motor scooter.

In the EU, Germany is the lackey of the US.
They will swallow anything coming from the US.
Remember NSA tapping A.Merkel's phone ?

Columbia University’s Professor Jeffrey Sachs accused the US of sabotaging the Nord Stream pipeline in the Baltic Sea, during a televised interview with Bloomberg

Germany must be frantic ever since the US sabotoged Nord Stream!

Interesting article in the German business newspaper 'Handelsblatt'. Which puts Merkel and her government in a very different light.

Even well before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Berlin suspected that the Kremlin was manipulating the gas market. Angela Merkel knew that Russia intended to blackmail Europe to quickly put the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline into operation, but has been'hiding' that information.

The German government did not take action and was not prepared for the gas crisis. According to confidential documents the newspaper has seen, the German Ministry of Economic Affairs warned in 2021 that Russia was filling European gas supplies “very slowly”. The documents also described that Russian actions threatened to have “dramatic consequences”. By July 2021, Gazprom had filled European gas supplies only half. However, Merkel wanted to give the impression during the last few months as German Chancellor in 2021 that she would leave the country in perfect condition. Worrying reports about unfilled gas stocks in the run-up to the winter period did not fit into that picture.

Merkel then told 'Handelsblatt' that there was no reason to believe that Russia was limiting gas supplies to Europe. She saw no signs of that at all. 'Is there enough ordered, or is the high price at the moment perhaps also a reason not to order that much?' Merkel countered the concerns, while defending the Russian energy company Gazprom.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would double Russian supplies of natural gas via a Baltic Sea route to Germany, was already controversial from the start. The 10 billion euro project received fierce criticism from allies such as Poland, Ukraine and the United States. According to critics, the pipeline made Europe too dependent on Russia for gas supply and thus provided Moscow with a diplomatic weapon.

When I went to Australia, I was told to keep an eye open and on the lookout, for the White Pointers, in the Pubs! They told me they could smell dollars from miles away, and attack, when you've had too many pints!

Interesting topic. As far as I remember, amongst people who read a lot of different sources, it was common knowledge that the pipeline project was seen critical, especially by the USA. It seems like it was always the goal of the USA to keep Germany away from Russia.
Also like what was being said about the NATO - The purpose of the NATO alliance is "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.
Anyway, that's another subject.

Also that being said, Germany or Merkel was indeed short sighted. You can't depend that much on Russia's energy but at the same time be their enemy the second something happens that turns the west "anti Russia".
Same with their forced switch to more clean energy in times like this. How can you, in the middle of an energy crisis, still cut off all nuclear energy? Well, the people surely feel it in their pocket, their purses feel lighter.
I've almost never seen a bunch of more stupid politicians than the German ones. Lackeys or not and whatever, sometimes it's hard to argue against people who say this government is out to destroy its own country.

Anyone that supports Nuclear power plants is a fool, to think this is safe and reliable! If a plant has a meltdown, tons of radioactive fallout travels around the Planet! It is proven, this fallout is deadly, and create Cancer, and mutations in living beings!
If you want this, just to save a few dollars, enjoy your short stay in the critical care unit for a short time!

Yeah, it's not what I said at all. But ok. I hope once you are gone from this planet someday I hope you can travel with all the weed smoking spirits to Utopia.😁😅

Thanks for the well wishes!
Always haha. No..I often said it before, basically I like many of your thoughts, but I always wonder how realistic they are in our current system/way of living.

Coal-fired power plants killed at least 460,000 Americans during the past two decades, causing twice as many premature deaths as previously thought, new research has found.
There are currently 440 nuclear reactors operational in the world, providing 10% of the world's electricity and the last deadly disaster (meltdown) was almost 40 years ago and killed around 40 people.

The Chernobyl disaster led to at least 164,000 residents of the surrounding area were permanently or temporarily displaced The displacements resulted in at least 51 deaths.

The Fukushima melt down occurred just 14 years ago. There have been a few deaths regarded as related to their exposure to radiation and there is ongoing concern about disposal of radiated waste into the sea. It was also a bit touch and go for a while whether this was going to become a major calamity.

Australia has one small nuclear power plant for medical purposes and personally I hope we never get to see nuclear power being pushed for energy supplies. There are arguments that when it comes down to it nuclear power is not co cheap.

Whatever. As for mutations, there are always people who think two heads are better than one.

I don't even want to defend nuclear energy in general, of course it comes with its risk.
The point I tried to make is that Germany obviously isn't ready to power the whole country with alternative energies but even when there is an energy crisis, they still want with their heads through the wall. Other countries keep on building nuclear power plants and like with many other things Germany wants to save the planet alone.

They want to save all immigrants of the world, save the climate and environment alone and
whatnot. What they do instead is destroy their own country and wealth.
Tney could have waited a few more years with cutting off power plants or do it more more in slower steps. So now they have to buy expensive energy from here and there, which is even partly produced by nuclear power plants outside of Germany. 😅

France relies heavily on nuclear power plants for its electricity. The UK due to hesitation in Nuclear Power Plant in the past, have to depends significantly on France for electricity import, accounting for about 15 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2023. If there were a war between France and the UK, all France need to do to cause a heavy damage is to cut off the supply across the channel.

Apart from nuclear power plants, what other viable alternatives could generate such a large amount of power relatively quickly while also reducing carbon emissions and meeting climate change commitments? Is there a higher priority for a country than national security? Any better alternative ?? Bear in mind, we are living in the real world, not an idealised 'utopia'. The British government has launched a roadmap for reaching its ambition for the UK to have 24 GWe of nuclear generating capacity by 2050, representing about 25% of the country's projected electricity demand. Note how long does it take to do that.

Similarly, for the possession of Nuclear submarine, WMD. The 'nuclear deterrent' argument is one of the most powerful arguments outthere for possessing nuclear weapons. The concept behind nuclear deterrence is that the possession of nuclear weapons by a country serves as a deterrent against attacks by other nations. The fear of massive retaliation and the potential devastation caused by nuclear weapons can theoretically discourage adversaries from initiating conflicts or using nuclear weapons themselves. North Korea, China, Russia play their WMD cards nicely. What is one of the major factor Japan's surrender in World War II. I think nowadays any political party that mention in their manifesto in support of triggering the button for the use of WMD, without condition to be used as a deterrent factor, will be wiped out in the next general election.

It is wonderful that while nowadays some countries possess a more powerful and modern WMD but, they refrain from deploying them to wipe out human civilization.

As much as I agree with you that Fukushima was in several ways a total disaster, nobody died as a direct result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. However, in 2018 one worker in charge of measuring radiation at the plant died of lung cancer caused by radiation exposure.

Australia is a great example of solar energy showing it’s possible if you have space and the weather. They even sell hydrogen to Japan (somewhat absurd, a big tanker has to transport this carrier of green/clean energy).
But many countries don’t have that luxury, not even with wind parks in the sea.

Germany wants to save the planet alone. ….

Similar for Belgium. Suddenly they realized the promise of shutting down the nuclear power plants was a big mistake. Even fhe Green Party (reluctantly) agrees. So now they have to renegotiate (the terms) to keep them open with a French energy provider which is obviously in a great position and can ask whatever it wants.
