Bank of Indonesia has been doing tests and is expanding the use of QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) to other countries. Quite some WNI have been enthusiastic about using it in Japan.
In August of last year they started and expected end of 2025 early 2026, a working system that integrates with Alipay and WeChat Pay to facilitate seamless payments for travel and trade in the PRC. I think the ‘integration’ they mention just means you would be able to scan the QR codes of the Chinese merchant with your Indonesian app. It’s supposed to be reciprocal btw.
Until now I had Wise connected to AliPay but this could be an interesting option.
