Dear Indo Forum members, I am moving to Bekasi in August to take up a teaching post. So far I am going without my wife. I was wondering if anyone on this forum can help with information about possible employment for her. She hold a TEFL (teaching English as a forgein language) qualification. Her office administration skills are also top class. If anyone know of anything or can pass my information on the anyone, I will be most grateful.

You'll have more fun without the wife though...

Appreciate your sense of humour but....

I appreciate your sense of humour my friend but I am a little more serious about this

It's going to be difficult. Work permits are given to specialized skill workers for jobs where there isn't a lot of local qualified workers. Admin skills are fairly common.

As for teaching, as you know, the requirements are quite strict too, so that will probably not be possible.

An administrative job would also most likely require fluent Indonesian skills.

Depending on how long you intend to stay in Indonesia and how your finances look, I might recommend that your wife consider accompanying you and looking at her time in Indonesia as an opportunity to accomplish something outside the paid work world - improve her credentials by getting another degree through a distance education program; throwing herself into some form of Indonesian studies; or even (obviously only if it is something you two have already talked about wanting to do) having a baby here, where she can inexpensively get lots of loving assistance.

If the two of you have "itchy feet" and are hoping to experience many years living abroad and teaching, it would be good to figure out a flexible lifestyle where sometimes one of you has the job and the other is the trailing spouse.

@ Euc- speaking as a poster, your post was kind of sexist and gross. I've known expat families torn apart here, with long term and very sad consequences, because hubby couldn't keep it in his pants when presented with the local temptations. There is nothing amusing about it. Encouraging that kind of behavior, even jokingly, is rather disrespectul.

What about seeing what positions are open at the South African embassy? Might be a long shot, but there could be something there.

if she holds a bachelor degree together with her TEFL qualification, she could find a job here. As for admin job, I couldn't get any more since I left mine two years ago after giving birth and I'm a local.

Why not try for a job as a teacher if she has the qualifications and experience

I seem to remember South Africa being one of the nationalities accepted for a native English speaker at some point... I think I saw that in a job posting in Indonesia at one point, but I might be remembering wrong.

There are lots of teaching opportunities, full time or even just hourly, available for someone with her certification and native level English ability, and many of those schools/institutions would do it without offering a KITAS, but of course we do not condone illegal employment on this forum.

Wow, thank you very much for all the replies and suggestions. I have been told that this forum is great and I am so pleased I joined. My wife does not have a degree. I am wondering if anyone knows if she could make some money tutoring from home? Any ideas or thoughts?

EF in Bekasi are always looking for eSL teachers. Though that branch does have a number of different reviews relating to management but might be worth a shot.

She can make money from tutoring but would have to keep it low key as technically it isn't allow if she is on a travelling spouse visa.

I'm going to be a bit further out probably in West Kerawang. My hobby for sometime will likely be looking for an expat pub!

I reckon you might be looking for some time out that way...

Perhaps a better hobby might be starting one.

Gerhann, message me when you arrive & I will meet up with you & your wife, if that is ok with you.
