In a mall I had a look at a car of a brand that I had kinda ignored before, the (new) Hyundai Santa Fe. The i10 and i20 are a bit boring but not bad cars, but unlike in Europe, their price setting doesn't make them very competitive.
The Santa Fe is priced between 510 and 630 Juta. Always automatic, with mostly Diesel engines and normally in 2WD. Of course it is full option, you get things as LED lights, a giant sunroof, drive modes Eco, Sport and Smart, etc. And a nice warranty of course. But would you need these options in Indonesia? A sunroof is heavy so rather bad for the point of gravity in a SUV, and it makes the Aircon work overtime. LED lights are cool and probably the future,...oh no, that's laser lights.
So it really doesn't offer anything that the Japanese competition does not have. And its residual value is questionable at best. Then for me it's a no-brainer, go for the Fortuner, look at the Terra or wait a bit for the facelifted Pajero Sport when you are in the market for a larger SUV. (Okay, medium sized for our American friends here.) And if you really have money to spend, the three German premium brands all have their line-ups available here, the Volvo XC90 gets a facelift btw.
Another reason I had a look at the Hyundai stand, was that Hyundai and Kia currently have a big advantage on their competition in the electric car arena.
Where Tesla, Jaguar and Audi offer very expensive solutions, and Toyota & Honda still on hybrids and going toward hydrogen, the Kia E-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric are siblings which offer a good range (>300 km) at a competitive price. In Europe, the waiting after ordering is already over a year.
Obviously the sales persons could not tell me anything about their plans for BEV's in Indonesia.
