Military officer orders forest burners be shot

A military official in the Indonesian province of Jambi says he has ordered that anyone who deliberately sets fire to forest areas be shot, as authorities struggle to contain fires that cause choking smoke in the region.

"This is to stress a point to the people, who have been warned many, many times," said Colonel Refrizal, commander of the forest fire task force in Jambi. "(This is) to show our firmness and seriousness."

This a link to a video and story about the impact of Duterte's war on drugs. It can sound seductively like a neat, almost surgical decision. Cut out the drug dealers and society will be so much better off. But along with that process develops a culture where violence and killing becomes an acceptable process for difficult situations.

While I absolutely disagree with this 'policy', if indeed it is one, I imagine the government rationale is that the uneducated farmers starting the fires may not understand any other type of threat to stop their behavior (which is financed by the big palm oil companies, as we know). However, it would be a disaster if the threat was ever put into action. Better to shoot the company management and directors of the palm oil companies instead.

Sime Darby have operations in Indonesia and have over 200,000 hectares planted. Other groups with interests in Indonesian Palm Oil are IOI, FELDA, and Genting Plantations.

There was an order a year or two ago for the police to shoot fire starters. From the President I believe. This time it is the military and a slippery slope is being crossed by allowing the military to handle domestic problems. I can only see more problems than not from this action.

As for the monkeys, no one could shoot one so they are calling in the Dyak to handle them. Say they have a way to do it.

Some are Malaysian companies, some Singaporean and most Indonesian. The bigger Indonesian ones tend to have corporate offices and directors in Singapore. There is also at least one big US company involved in palm oil production in Indonesia.

Even Samsung has a palm oil operation in Indonesia.
