Very often agents only request a Surat Domisili while officially that is just a first step and not what is needed to prove residency but a SKTT or KTP. One day the light bulb at Immigration will go on it and will go wrong for someone and then we will read it here…

I can give hundreds of examples where having a KTP saved my @ss or was ar least very convenient. If anybody here wants to be the person walking around or traveling with a passport instead of a small credit card sized ID, and have a maid officially buying and registering the motorbike and only use Wise for payments and pay full rates at museums, be my guest.

I disagree because :
a) Immigration requests the "Surat Domisili" for a proof of address , not residency ;
b) It has been like that for decades and I am not aware of any complaint ;
c) In relation to the address , "Surat Domisili" (or similar name) , SKTT and KTP have the same primary source (RT & RW) , so similar credibility .
d) If a more recent address' proof is needed , a "Surat Domisili" would be preferable (for example, in my country this proof cannot be older than 6 months) .

You forgot the case where it saved your @ss , and "hundred of examples" is an exaggeration .

About what you said :
1) "the person walking around or traveling with a passport instead of a small credit card sized ID" : certainly it is more convenient , but I normally carry just a photocopy of my passport + a photo of it in the phone when I go outside , unless I know I need the original (which is around 1% of the cases) .
2) "have a maid officially buying and registering the motorbike" : I would prefer to register in my Indonesian wife's or friend's name instead of in my name .
3) About "use Wise for payments" : I suppose you refer to international payments to people (payments to companies I do with credit card) , if so I don't do it from Indonesia , but if I need to , I will probably do it through Wise anyway . But are you saying there is no other alternative if you don't have a KTP ?
4) About "pay full rates at museums" : yes , I heard about that before (but I probably will never go to any museum) .

So , yes the foreigner's KTP has its usefulness sometimes , but my post no.40 was to show that KITAP holders have the option to not get a KTP if it is hard to get .

I’m gonna stop with this particular discussion because it’s like talking to a obstinate person who says “you don’t need a SIM to drive here because they will never check it and if they do the fines are insignificant”.

I’m from a country and continent where an official (local !!!) ID is also mandatory if you reside there. Just like here in RI. So that’s a no brainer and not a subject for “well you don’t really need it so much so you could skip it” discussion.

Please don't change subjects , we were talking about an additional identification card (KTP for foreigners) which in practice is not essential for living legally in Indonesia .

Let me clarify , my suggestion was for an out-of-normal situation & will not harm people . For normal situations I recommend KITAP holders to get the KTP (I myself got it) .

The Law requires KITAP holders to get a KTP , but it does not criminalize the decision of not getting it . The Law states only a small fine (up to Rp50k) for not having a KTP every time an authority request it (see below) .

Here, like in my country carrying permanently an I.D. is mandatory.
Simple. I have my KTP with me as soon I leave the house.
+ a photocopy of my passport and ITAP.

Among other things, if you get intercepted by police, for any reason, it show your goodwill and that you are legit.
My goodness, you don't need to come out of Harvard to understand that ?

Adding to why I behave differently : during more than 50 years in my country + more than 20 years in Indonesia , never an authority asked me to show my identification card , except of course when I was supposed to present it (to get a passport , to register at the Manpower Department , ...) .

Driving in France, random check by police :

ID card
Vehicle registration
Vehicle technical control
Insurance

Walking on the footpath in France, random checks are exceptionnel, in Belgium or HKG it is something current.

Now for people coming from countries where the ID card does not exist (US and UK) this can sound strange.

Voting in France, showing your ID card is mandatory. Driving license or UNI card is not going to do it.

In Indonesia, domestic travel, I show my KTP.
