Hmm, not so sure about that O. Especially in your neck of the woods there are families where one is ābornā into a political party. Think Golkar for instance. The same applies to other parts of the country with PDI-P for instance. The loyalty is definitely there. Of course young kids often rebel and want to choose their own way.
People who are "born" into a political party are part of the elite and are very far from being a majority or even a strong minority. They are also often the old generation, particularly the Golkar colored one if I may say.
Even though Golkar remains a strong political force at the national level, being now the second political force behind PDI-P in number of seats at the DPR, it has lost most of its influence and power here in Sulut. Golkar had 4 seats at the first post-Soeharto PiLeg DPR SulUt, slipped to 2 at the second legislature post Soeharto, then to only 1 for the last legislature and will get 1 again for the coming one.
Golkar in SulUt only barely survive at the DPR-D level and even there, hasn't win more than 1 seat per Daerah Pemilihan for the past 2 legislatures. They will get only 6 seat out of 45 for the coming one,
What is interesting in my region is that despite a sizeable increase of our Muslim community, mainly due to the recent settlement of immigrants from other provinces attracted by higher salaries, it did NOT translate in a shift of balance in the seats won by Nationalist parties vs Religious parties. It's in fact even the contrary which happened. For the first two legislature post-Soeharto we had 1 seat won by the PPP. For the subsequent 2 we had 1 seat for PAN and since 2019, none (again none in 2024).
PDI-P has been the strong party here in Sulut for the past decade+ and we massively voted for PDI-P candidates both for PilPres and Pileg DPR... In 2019 in Sulut, the ticket Joko-Ma'ruf Amin, supported by PDI-P, managed to get 3,5 times more suara dan Prabowo-Uno. But in 2024 Prabowo the candidate of Koalisi Indonesia Maju got almost 5 more times suara than Ganjar, the PDI-P candidate. So much for loyalty to a party here.
At the National level, in 2019 the PDI-P candidates (Joko) got elected with some 89 millions of votes while in 2024 the PDI-P candidate (Ganjar) barely managed 27 millions voters
In 2019 Prabowo gathered 68 millions voters, in 2024 he convinced 96 million voters.
It is due to the lack of political awareness, the lack of political identity and the lack of political loyalty from voters that so many millions of votes can shift from one man to another so easily.
It is also rich that Prabowo, who was recurrently mocked by many (including me) for failing several times to win the heart of Indonesian for a Presidential election is now the President who has received the highest number of vote ever in an Election in Indonesian history. In this he has surpassed Joko, the precedent record holder, by more than 10 million voters.
In a lot of Daerah Pemilihan in SulUt interesting shifts of balance have occurred, perhaps indicating too that political loyalty is definitely something flexible.
