DON'T PANIC.... well, maybe a little bit.

Discrimination based on behavior is acceptable, and if it’s based on performance it is usually justifiable.

Vaccination record has always been a requirement here in USA for public schools, at least in all the states I know. If your kid is not vaccinated, she’s not mingling with a class full of other kids.

You can’t change your skin color or your gender, and you typically inherit your religion. Discrimination based on these traits are unacceptable.

You can be discriminated based on what you do (or fail to do), but not on what you are.

Being put in jail is discrimination, but it’s justifiable because you’re only put in that situation if you do something (break the law). If you don’t want to go to jail, don’t do the crime. Requiring a job applicant to have a university degree is discrimination, but it’s ok because you too can go to university. Allowing top employees to get Rp 200 million salary a month while the bottom one get Rp 5 million is discrimination, but it’s fine because the directors have more experience and higher skill gained over the years.

Discrimination based on refusal to dress modestly in a temple or refusal to be vaccinated is acceptable. If you do the wrong thing and receive negative consequence for it, it’s not discrimination, it’s justice.
I might have used a different analogy than prison - especially as you are in the US.Looking from the outside in the justice system there seems rather discriminatory :)

I agree that the prison system in USA is bad and it needs a radical improvement, but it doesn’t mean that the entire concept is not workable. There will always be criminals, so prisons are always necessary in one form or another. You can’t declare it obsolete like apartheid and segregation.

Speaking of prisons in a completely different arena, I understand (from a reliable source) that prisoners aren't being supplied with masks or hand sanitizer- I have no evidence of the veracity of this for obvious reasons (can't get in to visit).
So, today's shopping trip involves a trip to a prison to drop off a parcel of masks & wipes & hand sanitizer & soap.
Yes, these people are convicted criminals but that surely doesn't mean they can be left without protection in what surely has to be a very vulnerable environment.
If anyone is so inclined it may be a nice/caring thing to do for your local prison if they don't have any PPE or the usual gubbins we all seem to have got used to using.

I’m actually surprised that the U.S. Department of Justice decided to release 23,800 inmates of low-level crimes to serve their sentences at home due to the pandemic.

I would personally not have made the effort of explaining the basic tenets of society. Since the person you were replying to seems to have seen and done it all, I am surprised he can't even grasp this very basic concept.

Are you sure your good will not fall into the laps of the notoriously corrupted prison system, its guards and their families rather the intended recipients?

I am sure.

Sad state of affair nowadays is that a person who has a different view than the majority, is immediately branded as idiot, selfish, irresponsible etc ....
Where is democracy gone ?
And I am not speaking about Indo, I am speaking about (supposedly) well educated expats. But on the other hand, the same is going on in France where any doctor or scientific who criticizes the government or the actual madness is thrown in the fire, publicly discredited by the media...
Where is the idea of democracy and freedom of speech / thinking gone ?
We are at the point where opposition parties, unions, medias, etc ALL follow the herd of sheeps without anyone raising questions ! Except for a very, very few.
But don't worry boys and girls, whatever you post as "subtil" comment doesn't touch me and SURE will not make me change my mind.
And if some are jalous because I travelled SEA more than them.... so be it.
Disclaimer : I am not even upset !

It's not so much that you are an idiot selfish or irresponsible... it is more that you rant on & on & on & on about this topic :p
However in some topics you have things to say that are interesting- so, from my perspective, I have to flick between ignore/not ignore.

Democracy means everybody has a say, including the right to call you an idiot. Anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists call us idiots, lemmings, and sheep all the time, and we can’t return the favor?

America probably has the most unrestricted freedom of speech in the world. People here can say things that would get you arrested for hate speech or sued for defamation in Europe. Still, the freedom typically mean the GOVERNMENT is severely restricted in preventing or penalizing speech it disagrees with. Other private people have the same freedom of speech as you. If you say something they disagree with, they are free to say something you disagree with.

Complaining is useless. Exercise your right by putting forward a good, scientifically valid arguments, and perhaps some people will agree with you.

But the real question is, are you upset about France in Euro 2021 and will you be upset with the rugby test matches against the Wallabies?
I dont follow any sport, so I dont give a shit who wins or loses.

I dont discuss with Americans (I am nice here...) , 80% of them are unable to discuss or debate. We have seen it recently.
So no need to reply again.

Here’s how democracy works. You can say whatever, and I’m free to reply to it. If you don’t like it, your choice is to not read it or not write. You have no say on what I write.

To all :
BTW, did in ANY of my post I targeted somebody specific, a B.M., a personality ? Did I say to somebody personally he was silly to wear a mask or to take the vaccine ?
Nope !
But the replies are nearly all directly and personaly adressed to me.

Not that I care, but it reflect a certain state of mind, and sure not a healthy one.
Attack the topic, the subject, not the messenger / poster

Basic ethics on any forum.

Allez, C u all later !

I don’t see anybody here being especially nasty and impolite to you. You brought up an idea on a public forum, then people respond. If you can’t handle people reacting to your opinion, you should reconsider saying them in public.

I have many unpopular opinions. When I don’t feel like explaining them to people, I keep them to myself.

There’s also this feature in English where the word ‘you’ doesn’t always mean you personally, it can mean you as people in general. It’s interchangeable with ‘one’, but that word seems too formal.

I have always been cordial to you. Sure I got testy and sarcastic at times, but not nasty. If anybody is getting personal, it’s you who proclaim that you don’t talk to Americans. That is definitely not friendly.

I can walk to the beach in 10 minutes. And this is not Monte Carlo beach, it's not like people are sitting 50 cm apart from each other. It's not Finns beachclub if you see what I mean ...
Beach closure is silly.
Same as riding in YOUR car with a mask. Silly.
Now, riding the subway, the bus, yes then the masks make sense.
As somebody mentioned, I try avoid looking like the arrogant bule, so I do a bit of figuration with the mask.

For what it's worth, I agree with every word in this post from you, Balifrog. The other posts... not so much.

I think Banana72's explanation about beaches is accurate; local officials making sweeping closures because they don't know what exactly to do, and don't want to categorize every different type of "going to the beach" into permitted and unpermitted.

Well England has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons by dropping all restrictions on public movement while asking people to make sensible decisions. This at a time when Covid cases are on the increase and a warning that this would create "factories for mutations". A decision weighing economic impact of restrictions against a relatively "low" Covid fatality rate. I can't imagine that this policy has been adopted without regard to medical advice and further indicates how we are all floundering. I suspect more and more countries will drift to this approach unless the English outcomes are absolutely catastrophic.
